AIBU thinking this name is not too posh

So we are expecting a baby girl soon and can't agree on names. I really like Tabitha Lily but DH thinks it is very posh and that you can't use a name like that unless you have a really posh sounding surname. I disagree and think that it's a pretty name and that whilst it's not as commonly used like Isla and Olivia etc just because it's not as popular it's doesn't mean it's as posh as he thinks. He also thinks she will be embarrassed when she is older. And keeps fixating on her ending up being called Tabby and risking being bullied, even though she could always stick with the full name of Tabitha, plenty of women I know don't have nicknames so it's not like she has to have one, plus we live in a nice area and there are plenty of posher names in use in the school and the area in general. (Not a private school, just lucky to be in a nice area, not trying to sound snobbish just outlining our situation, it's so nice and pretty an area that it's a major tourist hotspot) Our existing children use their full names so her using her full name isn't an unreasonable expectation.

Are there any Tabitha's out there? Do you regret your name or like it?

Or to anyone else, do you think it's an ok name? I've tried looking for other names but I just love this and its got under my skin and I just can't find something else I remotely like.

My cat is called Tabitha and she's anything but posh ! Ha
Is Tallulah similar? Tanisha...

Hohohoherewego · 18/09/2017 22:54

My DH wasn't over keen when I first suggested Tabitha but it just really suits her and he now agrees that it is just her. As someone said earlier in some kind of display of telepathy (!), mine is an unusual quiet bookish type who likes cats and old libraries.

Loopyaboutmy2boys · 18/09/2017 22:54

Flumy my thoughts exactly, but he seems to think she would be bullied and called Tabby. I just don't get it. No reason for any nickname, and if she wanted one then there is Tabby or Tabs or even Beth could be a possibility. But apparently no one chooses their own nickname, your friends do. He went to a school elsewhere in the country, on the outskirts of a large city and think his school life was different to mine. No way anyone was bullied at my school and most girls used their full name and if they wanted ti use a shortened version or a nickname they did it by choice!

I don't mind it, but had a cat when I was a kid called Tabitha and a friend recently got a kitten called Tabitha too, so it doesn't appeal to me as a name for a baby either

ConcreteUnderpants · 18/09/2017 22:56

I think Tabitha is lovely.
I immediately thought of Tabitha Rose. Like blankface I think it flows much better.

RoseGoldEagle · 18/09/2017 23:01

Tabitha is a beautiful name. I guess people have different ideas of posh, I tend to think of Imogen, Camilla, Celeste, Florence as quite posh- but then know more of these now and so they seem less posh, and anyway they are lovely names so who cares?! Tabitha I think of more along with Ivy, Martha and Violet, I love all of those, I don't think they're posh as such, just classic and a bit old fashioned and quite beautiful. Gosh I could honestly quite happily name a hundred little girls, but struggle with boys names for some reason.

thescottishplay I love that your rabbit has a middle name 😂

Loopyaboutmy2boys · 18/09/2017 23:03

Rosegoldeagle We know of a young Martha and he also doesn't like that name.

Pixilicious · 18/09/2017 23:03

Don't like it, it's a witches name. I know 1 Tabitha and she is Tabby

Loopyaboutmy2boys · 18/09/2017 23:05

And our ds has a Violet in his class. So many names in our lives that are off the list. There is nothing on the list apart from me loving Tabitha with Lily as the middle name for family reasons, even though it contravenes the non-floral requirement lol

Dustbunny1900 · 18/09/2017 23:13

So he hasn't picked ANY names he likes??

RainbowPastel · 18/09/2017 23:21

We had a cat Tabitha growing up. I do think it's posh. It depends on your surname but Tabitha Lily doesn't flow.

Loopyaboutmy2boys · 18/09/2017 23:22

No. There is one name that he mentioned that if we didn't know a someon with it for her name that he might have liked it but not a chance of us using this name and having her think we named baby after her

The CEO of my company is called Sharon. I'm not suggesting you name your child Sharon but I suggest challenging your husband's opinion of what the name of a CEO might be. (Or you could start a new thread on this.)

JanetStWalker · 18/09/2017 23:29

Tabitha was always my girl's name choice, OH said it sounded more like a cat's name Hmm

Definitely not too posh.

tararabumdeay · 18/09/2017 23:31

Dorothea.

SonicHedgehog · 18/09/2017 23:32

Tabitha is a cats name.

SonicHedgehog · 18/09/2017 23:33

Tabitha Twitchit

Benedikte2 · 18/09/2017 23:35

If you can't decide just tell your DH when baby's born that she definitely looks like a Tabitha. Get the MW in on the act so she knows to agree with you.
Good luck!

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 18/09/2017 23:36

I prefer Tabitha Rose too.

midnightmisssuki · 18/09/2017 23:36

My cousin is a Tabitha (my uncle was a huge fan of bewitched!) we call her Tabby - and she's a lovely girl. Never been bullied because of her name either.

Hohohoherewego · 18/09/2017 23:40

I never get why having a cat's name is an issue. I can see why having, say, a warthog's name or a cow's name or a snail's name could be a problem but, erm, cats are beautiful, strong, fierce creatures. I would not mind having a cat's name.

Pineappleandcheeseonsticks · 18/09/2017 23:41

Tabitha is fine, but Tabitha Rose is much nicer than Tabitha Lily - I just don't think they go very well together.

JanetStWalker · 18/09/2017 23:45

Tabitha is such a fabulous name in it's own right that it doesn't need a mincey little flower tacked on to the end.

Happydays21 · 18/09/2017 23:45

I love Tabitha and think Lily works well as a middle name. Dont mind the name Rose but hate the way its always suggested as a middle name. Not sure if there are millions of kids called something Rose but i would avoid it.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 18/09/2017 23:47

Nrtft but I absolutely love the name Tabitha x
