AIBU thinking this name is not too posh

So we are expecting a baby girl soon and can't agree on names. I really like Tabitha Lily but DH thinks it is very posh and that you can't use a name like that unless you have a really posh sounding surname. I disagree and think that it's a pretty name and that whilst it's not as commonly used like Isla and Olivia etc just because it's not as popular it's doesn't mean it's as posh as he thinks. He also thinks she will be embarrassed when she is older. And keeps fixating on her ending up being called Tabby and risking being bullied, even though she could always stick with the full name of Tabitha, plenty of women I know don't have nicknames so it's not like she has to have one, plus we live in a nice area and there are plenty of posher names in use in the school and the area in general. (Not a private school, just lucky to be in a nice area, not trying to sound snobbish just outlining our situation, it's so nice and pretty an area that it's a major tourist hotspot) Our existing children use their full names so her using her full name isn't an unreasonable expectation.

Are there any Tabitha's out there? Do you regret your name or like it?

Or to anyone else, do you think it's an ok name? I've tried looking for other names but I just love this and its got under my skin and I just can't find something else I remotely like.

I wanted a a Tabitha and DH said No! Very disappoint!!

DD has a similar name very uncommon and it suits her - still have a twang of regret

TatianaLarina · 18/09/2017 22:21

Ie because biblical, commonly used by all classes historically.

Loopyaboutmy2boys · 18/09/2017 22:22

He wants a name that he can imagine a director or CEO using but also doesn't want it to be too posh a name as feels a posh name should have a posh surname, ours isn't Smith or jones but it's not double barrelled either. He also doesn't want a name that has been over used or a modern name or a floral name or a name that is what he calls an old biddy name like many have chosen recently or a name that is short....

Love Tabitha. Would not pair it with Lily, which is a bit ubiquitous these days. There are plenty of other names to use as a middle name.
I have a friend with a 10 year old Tabitha and DS has a class mate Tabitha. One is known as Tab and the other Tabby.

Racingraccoons · 18/09/2017 22:23

I love love love Tabitha but I hate Lily (might be because I know a million of them!)

SuperBeagle · 18/09/2017 22:23

I don't think Tabitha is posh, because it's never been widely used enough for it to have class connotations.

LovePeanutbutter · 18/09/2017 22:25

I've got a Tabitha, loved the name since Bewitched.
She's called Tabitha Belle

She prefers Tabby and writes this on her school work. But is happy with Tabitha or Tabs or Tabsy.

Glumglowworm · 18/09/2017 22:26

Lovely name but not overly posh imo

I know one preschool Tabitha who does get Tabby, I know she's only little but it's not a problem.

VinoTime · 18/09/2017 22:26

I hear Tabitha Lily and my brain automatically shoots to Tiger Lily... Confused

Love Tabitha and I think Tabby is a beautifully sweet name for a little 'un. I'd be tempted to rethink the middle name though, if I'm being honest!

Viserion · 18/09/2017 22:26

Double barrelled isn't 'posh' these days. Loads of people just elect to use both their surnames either on marriage or when choosing which surname to give children. Every other person round here seems to have a double barrelled surname.

Ohmyfuck · 18/09/2017 22:29

I think it's a pretty name.

blankface · 18/09/2017 22:31

I think Tabitha's lovely, Tabitha Rose flows for me and I don't think it sounds 'posh' at all.

Names are so difficult to choose, aren't they hope you and DH can find the right names for your little one soon Flowers

thegreylady · 18/09/2017 22:34

I know one aged 6 who is known as Bitsy!
I asked her mum what it was short for and she said Tabitha.

Dustbunny1900 · 18/09/2017 22:36

Err definitely not what I'd think of as posh..don't hear that word except on MN but I'm thinking it means upper class or snooty?
When I think tabitha, I think of an unusual quiet bookish girl who likes cats and old libraries. It also has a "witchy" connotation here cause of bewitched.
I'm not sure why kids would make fun of her for the nick name tabby Confused I think it's adorable..but then I also have a feline type name and love it.

StellaRockafella · 18/09/2017 22:36

I love Tabitha. It's distinctive but I don't think it's posh.

I had a Cabbage Patch kid when I was little whose name was Autumn Tabitha, and I thought it was the loveliest name ever.

Hohohoherewego · 18/09/2017 22:37

Actually, I have a Tabitha Lily. She is ten. I picked Tabitha for a bunch of personal reasons (including I just like it) and Lily because it was my grandmother's name and the other one was called something unusable (think Brenda or similar) and I wanted to give her something that was

a) family-related,
b) fairly common so if she hated being called Tabitha she could switch to something inoffensive and fairly well-known (I do think Lily or Grace or Rose as middle names are the Laura and Louise and Jennifer of our times),
c) a flower name as it's kind of a tradition in my family that the girls have a flower as middle name.

Anyway. She loves her name. She is called Tabby and Tabs at times but more often just Tabitha.

We are not especially posh, though neither are we especially unposh, just ordinary really - and we don't have a posh surname (unusual but fairly ordinary-sounding English surname).

Tabitha has not been teased about her name at all. And she doesn't go to school with a load of Tarquins and Jemimas either. There are tons of kids at her school with more unusual names than she has!

I kind of wanted Fuchsia for her middle name but it didn't fit the well-known criterion and also DH vetoed it and it doesn't really go with Tabitha. Sadface. It's a great name.

Also, I quite like the Tiger Lily connotation. Peter Pan! She was quite fierce as I remember it.

Judydreamsofhorses · 18/09/2017 22:42

I only know cats called Tabitha, but I think it's a pretty name.

brasty · 18/09/2017 22:42

I love the name Tabitha. I think it is quite a posh name, but fashions change. Maybe 5 years from now every second girl will be called Tabitha.

Alittlepotofrosie · 18/09/2017 22:43

Its irrelevant whether its too posh or not. Your DH doesnt like it.

MissHavishamsleftdaffodil · 18/09/2017 22:45

Nothing wrong with Tabs or Tabby, and Tabitha Lily is lovely.

flumpybear · 18/09/2017 22:46

I have s Tabitha too - we're 'normal' not posh but good jobs, both got two degrees (if relevant!) but I see it as an in between name, not posh like Henrietta or Persephone but not too common --- middle but erring on a little unusual

What's to bully by the way?? My DD is a Tabby cat and kitten ... or Tabitha ???

Loopyaboutmy2boys · 18/09/2017 22:49

I didn't expect everyone to like it else it would be much higher up all the baby name charts but I'm glad the consensus seems to be that Tabitha isn't that posh a name!

He has just got home and another comment was that he thinks it's on a par to Esmeralda?!?! I wish I could understand how his mind is working as we don't have long to agree on a name and we have no lists of names, just his criteria of what it must fulfill which i posted on a previous page. When talking generically with him about names, the gist was there are 4 categories of names , those that are common (Stacey, Tracey, Chardonnay etc) then there are names that are well used (Isla, Grace, Emma, Ava, Olivia, Mia etc) and then there are names that Tabitha fits with like Matilda and Jessica and Isabel, and then there are much posher names on the next level. I don't want a too posh name, but genuinely think Tabitha is a perfect name. He thinks Tabitha is posh and is now saying he doesn't like it and also doesn't like Matilda and Isabel and Jessica and a few other names that were on a name list. There seems no logic and I'm struggling with what name he thinks will be a director or CEO that isn't too posh as he has this daft notion that a posh name needs a posh surname!! Not sure there is a name that exists that will tick the boxes...

Makes me think of Bewitched too. Pretty name.

Twistmeandturnme · 18/09/2017 22:51

Your DH is wrong. Tabitha is not posh. It's cute and fashionable. It's a pretty name. It's not 'posh'.
