I cannot look at the Trump speech although I know it has been given a lot of Fox fanfare.

There is something quite reassuring about Mueller's granite features but his silence is even more comforting.

I am so shocked by the police chanting in St Louis.

If Trump took IQ boosting pills then how come ... oh, never mind. Grin

I'm fascinated by one small detail. If the building lists 90 stories on elevators but only has 72 in reality, which buttons don't work? Grin

If the building lists 90 stories on elevators but only has 72 in reality, which buttons don't work?

I noticed that. It's typical Trump, isn't it? Just inflate the size of the building for the sake of it.

Regarding things going under the radar, it's Republican business as usual, isn't it?
There's too much going on to shout about. And the public can't cope with more than a few stories at a time.
However, I've seen comments about the new ACA bill. It's not considered as likely to go anywhere, but...

Well, it seems the habit of brazenly ignoring conflict with commercial interests is spreading: now the UK govt is giving it a whirl.

HMRC has hired Jacky Wright, vice-President of Microsoft, as Chief Digital Information Officer - and she'll keep her Microsoft job but take a 2-year sabbatical from it.

New HMRC IT boss to 'recuse' herself over Microsoft decisions
www.theregister.co.uk/2017/09/18/hmrc_cdio_to_recuse_herself_over_microsoft_decisions/

"She must recuse herself from any discussion and decisions relating to Microsoft, both within HMRC and across Government and we will put in place the necessary governance to manage."

Like most organisations, HMRC has a huge Microsoft footprint. The department is thought to have up to 85,000 desktops running Windows.

One insider said many of those are using Office 365, which it has also shifted its file storage to. He said HMRC also has a huge server estate primarily running Windows and is currently considering whether it moves to Azure.

"If she's recusing herself that could be awkward," he said. "HMRC does so much with Microsoft already."

The public sector spent £423m with Microsoft for the full-year 2016, according to a recent report by TechMarketView.

cozietoesie · 18/09/2017 20:17

There is a Republican House, a Republican Senate and a Republican President. (More or less.) Face the fact that this might well go through. McCain's 'No' last time was unexpected.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 18/09/2017 20:20

He voted no because of the process - he wanted a return to "normality" - so I'm hoping against all odds that he meant it.

I know the chances are that I'll be disappointed Sad

Gumpendorf · 18/09/2017 20:24

It may be another nail biter but according to this WaPo assessment Rand Paul says he's against as it doesn't go far enough to repeal Obamacare. Murkowski and Collins are likely to vote against. So if everything else is equal the answer is still 49. 🤞🤞

McCain is infuriatingly inconsistent.

perking that is shocking. I haven't been following British politics nearly as closely as I should but aren't some branch of the government (home office maybe?) currently in breach of some order? I'm afraid I don't even have enough information to find it on google so it's a bit useless

Whilst I was trying to google it though, I found this and was pretty Shock

Again, I remembered that it had happened but didn't remember all the details. It was two and a half months ago! This is probably a reflection of my terrible memory Blush

UK Parliament Hit By Cyber Attack Targeting Email Accounts

The British Parliament has been hit by a cyber attack which has reportedly been targeting MP’s email accounts and causing havoc with government communications.

[...]Unusual activity was first discovered on Friday and continued into the weekend, with the incident coming hot on the heels of reports that Russian hackers had stolen and were trading passwords and email addresses of thousands of government officials.

Government targets

In an email on Friday, which was seen by The Telegraph, authorities confirmed to MPs that “hackers were carrying out a sustained and determined attack on all parliamentary user accounts in an attempt to identify weak passwords. These attempts specifically were trying to gain access to users emails.”

It is not yet clear how successful the attack has been in terms of whether the hackers were able to access any sensitive or confidential information, but the concern is that Members of Parliament could be left open to extortion.
