AIBU thinking the race to be 'liberal' will kill AIBU?

The love of swearing, calling all men cunts, twats and everything else seems to be hurting MN and, in particular AIBU.

I realise it's 'cool' to swear and shows you're smashing the patriarchy and reclaiming vulgarity but won't MN (which is nothing more than a for-profit business) begin to clamp down on it when it hurts the bottom line?

AIBU thinking that the swearing here is over the top and seems like a childish way for repressed keyboard warriors to vent a little.

I do realise the first few posts will 'humorously' contain lots of cunts and fucks

Ah, we haven't had an anti swearing thread for at least a week now. I don't particularly notice it any more.

People who call all men counts or twats generally get called out for it.

faithinthesound · 16/09/2017 10:41

YA possibly NBU for thinking it.
YAB incredibly U to make an entire thread about it.

You're not going to win any friends coming into AIBU's backyard and telling them how to work their BBQ. You're just showing yourself up and sounding incredibly pearl-clutchy and holier-than-thou. The worst thing is, chances are, you're not like that at all, but your words are all we have to form an impression, and you have not made a good one.

Conventional wisdom is, if you don't like it here, then jog on. There are a ton of other subforums on this site alone that have a better chance of not offending your delicate sensibilities, and an entire internet beyond that if the festivities on MN prove to be not to your liking.

I missed them.

I forgot to include a link from the economist.

If you don't like swearing, maybe mumsnet is not for you dear. I believe the huns are more clean cut. I suggest you toddle off to them.

PurpleDaisies · 16/09/2017 10:46

So let mumsnet decide what their talk guidelines are. If they're actually losing proper revenue they're the ones to tell people to stop swearing.

BarbarianMum · 16/09/2017 10:47

I suppose it depends on whether you think AIBU's purpose is to draw people into discussion or to generate really good advertising revenue. I'm surprised that so many advertisers get upset about women their potential clientele swearing tbh.

faithinthesound · 16/09/2017 10:47
  1. People who start sentences with "without being rude" or "no offence, but" know all too well that they're about to be rude or cause offense. Disclaiming your rudeness doesn't negate it.
  1. Unless you're actually working for MN's financial department, what you think about what advertisers are likely to do is about as useful as tits on a bull.
  1. It's a quote from a song, and it's no more or ridiculous than your username - or anyone else's here. You know what they say about people in glass houses, don't you?

Up to Mumsnet isn't it, OP.If they think swearing is damaging their bottom line they will change the rules.

orlantina · 16/09/2017 10:48

But isn't that what advertisers are likely to do

I think MN is doing ok with advertising.

toomuchtooold · 16/09/2017 10:50

Wait, we're in The Economist? I might have to renew my subscription!

lettuceWrap · 16/09/2017 10:51

I'm not going to add any gratuitous fucks or cunts (well only those two).

The Economist table gave me a laugh yesterday when I saw it - the economist isn't the dry publication people assume it to be and it can be gloriously subversive at times.

I do swear like a trouper irl and it's certainly not because my intelligence, education, vocabulary or maturity is in anyway lacking (as is often suggested in anti-swearing threads).

AppleBosom · 16/09/2017 10:51

in my experience those who say hun swear a lot too.
i say hun, i dont swear much and im not offended by swearing.

Papafran · 16/09/2017 10:51

OP, I am not sure what you mean about damaging the bottom line. Could you explain? I swear sometimes, but usually not just for the hell of it. Swear words are just words- there are a hundred ways you could insult and upset someone without swearing, so maybe we should focus on people being cruel just for the sake of it instead.

Mittens1969 · 16/09/2017 10:53

I'm not keen on swearing either, OP, but it's not directed at me or anyone I know in RL, so it's water off a duck's back now. Grin

haveacupoftea · 16/09/2017 10:53

Who has called all men cunts? I've literally never seen a statement like 'all men are cunts' on MN.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 16/09/2017 10:56

You seem a little delicate, OP. I don't think Mumsnet is the right place for you.

FizzyGreenWater · 16/09/2017 10:58

Maybe a new MN swearing vocab is in order.

We could use the 'disclaimer glossary' so that everyone instantly knows the drill.

'OMG he is a total naiceing pombear'

'Naice off you utter beakering sweetcorn'

'You total bollard, what the Cod have you done now you penguin'

etc.

Ambonsai · 16/09/2017 10:59

Swearing in Aibu isn't a problem.
The problem is that it's reputation leads people to believe that they have some sort of free reign to be absolutely fucking obnoxious.
Nothing to do with being liberal

TanteRose · 16/09/2017 10:59

The Economist article is fab Grin

Liiinoo · 16/09/2017 11:00

I find the swearing on here a bit much, particularly as I seem to be catching the habit! But I doubt it will put advertisers off. Presumably sweary mums spend as much money as the more refined mums do.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 16/09/2017 11:01

Look.
There are a fuckton of websites where even the vaguest hint of swearing gets you deleted quicker than Trumps tax documents.

MN seems to do very well, even with all the cunting swearing, against the other websites.

If you don't like the swearing, then piss off to one of the other, glittery, pink shiny hun sites, where you can have ickle cute banners, and unicorns shit flowery words onto the screen.

Or come here, swear to your fucking hearts content and get some proper straight answers to some very fucking serious problems.

The raft of "gawjus huns" are thataway >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
