AIBU thinking the race to be 'liberal' will kill AIBU?

The love of swearing, calling all men cunts, twats and everything else seems to be hurting MN and, in particular AIBU.

I realise it's 'cool' to swear and shows you're smashing the patriarchy and reclaiming vulgarity but won't MN (which is nothing more than a for-profit business) begin to clamp down on it when it hurts the bottom line?

AIBU thinking that the swearing here is over the top and seems like a childish way for repressed keyboard warriors to vent a little.

I do realise the first few posts will 'humorously' contain lots of cunts and fucks

OP posts:
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 14:08

Well, that s quite obviously bollocks. I think I'd rather take my chances with the liberals rather than the 'alt-right', or the fruitloops on the extreme side of the Corbynite fringe

You do realise that the reference to "the liberals" includes the Corbynite lunatic fringe who consider themselves to be bastions of democracy and preserving the rights of ordinary people?

Because it's not the liberals trying to destroy free speech?

Have you seen the moderating policy in the below the line of The Guardian's "Comment is Free" section in action?

dontstophelping · 16/09/2017 14:08

I wasn't saying her presence here bothered me. I was suggesting she post elsewhere as she thinks this place is going to the dogs.

Don't like something, don't look at it.

I just switched off my Facebook as too many aspects annoyed me. I didn't post whining about how certain things were (in my opinion) wrong with it. I left. Quietly. Without fuss and moaning.

Try it.

Fucking try it.

dontstophelping · 16/09/2017 14:10

Called my somebody a 'fruit loop' because of their political leanings? Hmm

dontstophelping · 16/09/2017 14:10

*calling.

TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries · 16/09/2017 14:13

I'm so fucking happy that the Economist actually wrote an article about how much we swear that I think I might actually die.

suspects self of being responsible for a rather large portion of those 'strongest' swears on the Conception board

CockacidalManiac · 16/09/2017 14:15

Yeah, but they're aren't liberals, and would resist being called such a term. I'm sure it'd sound too blairite to them, and that's usually the worst insult they can muster.

Hastalapasta · 16/09/2017 14:16

Are you my DH? We had this discussion last night.

I won by pointing out the following:

Mumsnet seal of approval is coveted by brands,
Mumsnet is still the biggest parenting site in the UK,
No on is forcing brands to advertise here,
I do not swear around my kids, so being able to do so on a chat forum is a relief!
Posters are free to fuck off to Nethuns if they are offended by the profanity.

So no, don't think it will hurt the bottom line.

I don't think you understand the concept of free speech do you?

BeyondThePage · 16/09/2017 14:18

I like Mumsnet, not because of the swearing, but in spite of it. There is a general say-anything-if-you-can-back-it-up air about the place which is not present on more censored sites.

Don't like the fact that it is constantly trawled by journos for a quick cheap story, but a bit of swearing that can be skimmed past is not going to send me clutching pearls to the light side....

Hastalapasta · 16/09/2017 14:19

No one, ffs!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 14:23

Posters are equally free to stay here and comment they don't like swearing and that they think it adds nothing to the quality of the debate. Such intolerance. No one is telling you not to swear but you (general you) seem incapable of hearing any other view without resorting to the trite and hackneyed NetMum response.

Setting aside the swearing aspect the intolerance of some so called liberals is a valid discussion point.

CockacidalManiac · 16/09/2017 14:23

That's a very polite way of describing some of them. Anyone that questions orthodoxy, whether it's Owen Jones or Clive Lewis, gets their arses handed the them online.

Much like anyone here who questions the orthodoxy of how wonderful swearing is.

I like Mumsnet, not because of the swearing, but in spite of it Yes me too.

What are they?

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/09/2017 14:33

I do find it hard when the most insulting words you can label someone is the slang for the female anatomy, I just cannot understand why women would do this.

That is precisely WHY we should use those words. Reclaim them so they become like dick and cock. Because the whole 'never use cunt because it is so offensive' only works if it is used very infrequently. If everyone went around saying it, it would be less shocking.

I think the swearing is a function of the user group. People who are more intelligent and/or more educated with larger vocabularies tend to swear more. The demographic on here is skewed that way.

I think I probably contributed my fair share of swear words. I hope I also contributed a fair share of helpful and balanced comments.

BIWI · 16/09/2017 14:33

Justine posted about the 'story' about advertisers worried about the swearing in MN, and that it was a created story. But it's certainly taken off!

I love, love, love the fact that The Economist actually analysed some of our posts to prove their point!

I also, though, find it very disappointing that there's so much press about this - shock horror, women on the internet swear! I wonder if they bother to look at male-dominated sites to see what they're saying and what language they're using?

BIWI · 16/09/2017 14:34

Oh, and by the way, it's not compulsory to swear on Mumsnet! Plenty of posters manage to post all over the site without using a swear word. Even if they're angry.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/09/2017 14:37

Double shock horror MOTHERS swear. We are supposed to be fragrant flowers, calm and clean of word and deed, handing out tissues, lollipops and a cheerful smile to all.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 14:40

I have seen one largely unconvincing report of but keep telling yourselves that if you want. Maybe you lead a very sheltered life but I can think of plenty of examples i have seen of people using "effing this" and "effing that" which utterly belie your case.

MissWilmottsGhost · 16/09/2017 14:40

Grin beyond

If swearing makes advertisers fuck off then great, I can't stand the cunts.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 14:43

What an exaggeration. I don't fulfill any of those clichés. I don't need to swear to prove it.

MissWilmottsGhost · 16/09/2017 14:44

Lass I'm a scientific professional with a Mensa IQ and I love a good swear. In fact I have never heard so much swearing as in a research laboratory full of intelligent scientists.

orlantina · 16/09/2017 14:47

I rarely swear in normal conversation - not when I was a scientist and not when I worked in a school. It does still surprise me to hear certain words used in the staffroom - even when it's out of earshot of the children.

I swear online - I think that's a bit different to saying it out loud.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/09/2017 14:47

You're not normally so snippy Lass Smile

I do stand by the fact that this place is pretty well-read and intelligent. I know when things happen I often come here for comment because it's fairly common that there will be posters who know what they are talking about. I don't see that on other 'mother' sites.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/09/2017 14:49

What an exaggeration. It was clearly supposed to be Confused
