AIBU thinking the race to be 'liberal' will kill AIBU?

The love of swearing, calling all men cunts, twats and everything else seems to be hurting MN and, in particular AIBU.

I realise it's 'cool' to swear and shows you're smashing the patriarchy and reclaiming vulgarity but won't MN (which is nothing more than a for-profit business) begin to clamp down on it when it hurts the bottom line?

AIBU thinking that the swearing here is over the top and seems like a childish way for repressed keyboard warriors to vent a little.

I do realise the first few posts will 'humorously' contain lots of cunts and fucks

OP posts:
Lethaldrizzle · 16/09/2017 12:09

I agree op, it turns a debate aggressive and vitriolic

twattymctwatterson · 16/09/2017 12:14

This thread is started in here is fairly often and it always goes the same way. But then you know that don't you?
OP if you don't like the swearing you don't need to hang around as there are lots of forums which do not allow swearing. Alternatively stay but don't use the topics you find to be the most sweary.
The ability to swear on MNet is a long established talk guideline and it doesn't seem to hurt the advertising revenue- oddly enough because the consumers advertisers target don't mind swearing (for the most part).
I always find the "no swearing" brigade to be very entitled.

streetface · 16/09/2017 12:18

I swear because I've got a potty mouth not because I'm liberal. Definitely not. I never swear AT people on here though and I never ever use the C word (except in my head)

I am educated to post graduate level and got an A in English at school. I also read very widely.

Swearing isn't nice but it isn't an indication of illiteracy, poor vocabulary, lack of education or liberalism.

BeyondNoone · 16/09/2017 12:32

As one of the few places on the internet where you won't get deleted and blocked for swearing, I'd argue it's probably better for mns bottom line and will be encouraged by them as their USP.

existentialmoment · 16/09/2017 12:34

Oh for fucks sake, we swear because we want to and because are grown fucking adults. No other reason at all.

What the fucking fuck has "trying to be liberal" got to do with it?

EddChinasVagina · 16/09/2017 12:34

Boring. What is the point of this thread?

Here's a "fuck" for their next study. Have a "cunt", too.

NotACleverName · 16/09/2017 12:37

Re. Liberalism, liberals have become the most intolerant members of society, and so full of hate and "hate speech" its quite shocking. But the irony escapes them.

Hmm Funniest fucking shit I've read today, that.

BeyondNoone · 16/09/2017 12:38

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 16/09/2017 12:39

there are loads of highly censored sites out there with a similar readership to mumsnet (netmums for instance), so some people must be on mumsnet because they like the fact that you can swear. For me it's part of the appeal.
There are people on here that aren't parents, there are dads on here, but they haven't changed the name of the site to 'parentsnet' or 'womensnet' because the majority of users are mums. Advertisers understand that you can't appeal to everyone and like pps have said, sweary mums still buy things.

ghostyslovesheets · 16/09/2017 12:40
Hmm
AIBU thinking the race to be 'liberal' will kill AIBU?
InTheRedTent · 16/09/2017 12:46

Ever consider this site is so busy precisely because it isn't censored? Go onto a lot of forums and you end up spending more time trying to decipher the strange combination of punctuation or the bizarre use of calling someone a barstool - is there anyone on the planet who speaks like this in real life? You either don't swear and call them an idiot, or you call them a bastard, life goes on and censorship is trying to change the way we speak for no good reason. There is nothing liberal about swearing, there is something decidedly strange about a fear over the use of any particular combination of letters.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 16/09/2017 12:47

The only thing that surprised me is that there is almost no swearing on the book section, considering the amount of utter drivel that gets published.
I might have to venture there to cunt it up a bit.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 12:58

Re. Liberalism, liberals have become the most intolerant members of society, and so full of hate and "hate speech" its quite shocking. But the irony escapes them

Funniest fucking shit I've read today, that

Bit of a tangent but you clearly have not seen any of the threads about the feminists who were threatened and harassed and physically attacked for wanting to hold a meeting. Their attackers were exactly the type of people being referred to as "liberals" in this comment and using vile and hateful language about the women they were attacking.

flippinada · 16/09/2017 13:03

What on earth does swearing have to do with being liberal, or indeed any political persuasion? I don't think the two are linked in any way.

NotAgainYoda · 16/09/2017 13:10

Bingo!!!!!!!

Betrump · 16/09/2017 13:20

Because it's not the liberals trying to destroy free speech?

CoughLaughFart · 16/09/2017 13:24

Have any advertisers pulled out because of the swearing?

A couple, yes (allegedly anyway). And of course the likes of the Mail have leapt on this because 'Advertisers ditch Mumsnet due to potty-mouthed women' makes great copy. (Better copy than simply lifting and shifting threads directly from MN anyway.) There's no story 'Dozens of advertisers couldn't give a shit if people swear on Mumsnet'.

OP - if you're really worried about what's 'hurting Mumsnet', check out the 'A word of advice for MNHQ' threads in Site Stuff.

SilverySurfer · 16/09/2017 13:32

PurpleDaisies
Ah, we haven't had an anti swearing thread for at least a week now. I don't particularly notice it any more.

Has it really been that long? It seems like only yesterday Grin

Nethuns is -------> that way. Enjoy.

Iheartjordanknight · 16/09/2017 13:36

This makes me laugh. If MN cared they would just block out the swear words. The very basic technology needed to do that has been around oh, about 15 years Grin

Obviously they wouldn't just hope their users do what they say. How naive!

dontstophelping · 16/09/2017 13:36

Off you fuckity fuck to net Huns then.

How calling all men cunts and twats is liberal is 😂😂😂.

CockacidalManiac · 16/09/2017 13:54

Re. Liberalism, liberals have become the most intolerant members of society, and so full of hate and "hate speech" its quite shocking. But the irony escapes them.

Well, that s quite obviously bollocks. I think I'd rather take my chances with the liberals rather than the 'alt-right', or the fruitloops on the extreme side of the Corbynite fringe.

CockacidalManiac · 16/09/2017 13:55

Plus a generalised sexist statement that 'all
men are cunts/twats' will get you at least a comment deletion.

GlacindaTheTroll · 16/09/2017 13:58

'Has it really been that long? It seems like only yesterday'

It was earlier this morning.

MN's FB strap line 'the one with the swearing'

Does what it says on the tin.

Your link is behind a paywall. This one isn't(I think).

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3034856-Janice-Turner-article-in-todays-Times

I boycotted The Times decades ago but like others on MN am now subscribed to The Times as it is supports free speech in a way other papers don't.

The connection between swearing and being liberal is neither here nor there but the connection between being liberal and suppressing free speech definitely exists.

Those of you with your "Off you fuckity fuck to net Huns then comments might like to consider free speech.

Has any one said on this thread not to swear? I certainly haven't. I have said I don't like it ; it does not impress me and it absolutely fails to add any credibility to a post. If your response to comments like that is Off you fuckity fuck to net Huns then you might want to ponder about who exactly is seeking to police other users and shut down debate.
