AIBU thinking the race to be 'liberal' will kill AIBU?

The love of swearing, calling all men cunts, twats and everything else seems to be hurting MN and, in particular AIBU.

I realise it's 'cool' to swear and shows you're smashing the patriarchy and reclaiming vulgarity but won't MN (which is nothing more than a for-profit business) begin to clamp down on it when it hurts the bottom line?

AIBU thinking that the swearing here is over the top and seems like a childish way for repressed keyboard warriors to vent a little.

I do realise the first few posts will 'humorously' contain lots of cunts and fucks

Couldn't be much further off topic, but my first form tutor was a Miss Wilmott! Grin

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 14:50

MissWilmottsGhost

Lass I'm a scientific professional with a Mensa IQ and I love a good swear. In fact I have never heard so much swearing as in a research laboratory full of intelligent scientists

And your point is what exactly ?

Some clever people swear - some clever people don't. I am not going to boast about my academic and professional qualifications.

Some very uneducated people swear - some don't.

If swearing is and of itself such a good thing why are you (general you) always at such pains to point out how clever you (general you) are ? No one had said otherwise. I didn't say that- my point is swearing is used by all classes and levels of intelligence.

maxthemartian · 16/09/2017 14:51

Just because you're not swearing doesn't mean you're not looking for a fight.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/09/2017 14:53

Just because you're not swearing doesn't mean you're not looking for a fight. As is clearly evidenced on this thread.

BeyondNoone · 16/09/2017 14:57

I swear more now than I used to, my IQ is still the same afaik?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 14:58

Right so posting an opinion at variance with the majority is "looking for a fight?"

How does that square with free speech and open debate?

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/09/2017 15:00

FFS it's correlation not causation.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/09/2017 15:02

No Lass it is comments like this, "Maybe you lead a very sheltered life" that make you look like you're looking for a fight. Anyway, off out for a run. I shall try not to randomly shout profanities at passers-by.

orlantina · 16/09/2017 15:03

FFS it's correlation not causation

I don't think it's much of a correlation. I don't hear much swearing in everyday life - but most of the people I do hear swear are not people who I associate with academic achievement.

The main swearing I hear everyday tends to be from the alleyway near my house and - at the moment - from the people doing the scaffolding.

BeyondNoone · 16/09/2017 15:08

I have a weird correlation... I know plenty of people who swear a lot and are less academic, but they won't say cunt. Otoh, I know more intelligent people who swear less, but use stronger words when they do.

Penhacked · 16/09/2017 15:09

Hats off to whoever created that little graph at The Economist, that is some seriously clever British humour right there. I think I need to subscribe.

startingagain17 · 16/09/2017 15:11

Swearing on MN has been going on since it was a bunch of cells. :-/

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 15:17

I hear almost no swearing in every day life. I work in an environment where probably 3/4 of the people around me are educated to post graduate level.

My comments about "leading a sheltered life" was with reference to the unpleasant experiences of things like behaviour seen on late night trains by people who certainly were not using swearing to supplement a large vocabulary.

FFS it's correlation not causation - was that a reply to me? I never said it was causation. I am sceptical about there being any meaningful correlation.

existentialmoment · 16/09/2017 15:22

Isn't that though because more intelligent or educated people know when to swear and when not to though? The kind of people who swear indiscriminately are one thing, but the kind of people who swear appropriately and knowing their audience are quite different.

CaptainBrickbeard · 16/09/2017 15:27

I really don't think advertisers will withdraw over swearing; why would they?

I don't think swearing has anything to do with being liberal or feminist.

Anyone who posts a "all men are..." type comment is very swiftly pulled up on it. Occasionally a poster pops up claiming that posters on this website hate men and declare it often, but that's simply not true and I suspect those posters of being either goady or a bit dim.

I agree but that is different from the "I'm so clever and I swear / swearing means I've got a large vocabulary" posts.

Are these posters seriously trying to deny there are people who are heavy swearers because they lack the vocabulary to express themselves otherwise?

existentialmoment · 16/09/2017 15:37

I don't think that's why they swear though. Nobody lacks vocabulary to that extent. It's probably more that they grew up hearing people talk like that and its normal to them.

ApplesinmyPocket · 16/09/2017 15:46

"DFOD I know but please what is DKUD?"

Do Keep Up Dear?

I don't swear and hardly ever hear anyone swear IRL, apart from the odd damn or bloody - swearing should surely be an underscore, an emphasis, held back for "this is REALLY bad and I'm pretty cross about it" moments!

JacquesHammer · 16/09/2017 15:57

YANBU to dislike swearing.

YABVU to think that other people should alter their behaviour in response to your delicate sensibilities.

If you don't like something (legal) you're reading on the internet the onus is on you to make a choice whether you continue to read or whether you remove yourself from the situation.

calling all men cunts, twats and everything else

I am yet to see anyone on MN suggest all men are twats. I regularly see people suggest a CERTAIN man is a twat for a CERTAIN behaviour. The two are very different

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 15:58

"DFOD I know but please what is DKUD?"

Do Keep Up Dear?

So patronising and so hypocritical. I would guess the posters who use them were outraged by David Cameron's "calm down dear" comment.

CockacidalManiac · 16/09/2017 17:31

What are they?

They're on the left. Traditionally in British politics, Liberals occupy the centre ground.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/09/2017 17:42

I suspect the OP was using liberal in the pejorative American sense, not the British political sense.

Zadig · 16/09/2017 18:03

I never really hear swearing on a day-to-day basis and on MN I just sort of gloss over it. Sometimes I find it quite depressing tbh, but here I am nevertheless. Grin
What I do find odd is when people get evangelical about their right to swear, but simultaneously feel the need to tell everyone they are actually highly educated with four degrees or whatever - as if there is a link. Hmm You can be as academic as you like, but still be socially inept.

ButchyRestingFace · 16/09/2017 18:06

I ❤️ the fact OP has managed to get one of her own posts deleted on the very first page. 👍🙄

It was the one where she realized her argument had no merit so she resorted to bagging out my username Grin Grin Grin
