The love of swearing, calling all men cunts, twats and everything else seems to be hurting MN and, in particular AIBU.

I realise it's 'cool' to swear and shows you're smashing the patriarchy and reclaiming vulgarity but won't MN (which is nothing more than a for-profit business) begin to clamp down on it when it hurts the bottom line?

AIBU thinking that the swearing here is over the top and seems like a childish way for repressed keyboard warriors to vent a little.

I do realise the first few posts will 'humorously' contain lots of cunts and fucks

Another day, another 'you're all doing the Internet wrong' thread Hmm And yet MN has been around for years and is only expanding. It really doesn't seem to have been hurt by the swearing yet. Probably because an online use of swearing does not correlate with shopping habits.

DJBaggySmalls · 16/09/2017 11:04

Its now possible to use a diagram to show a correlation between the rise of 'strongest' swears on Mumsnet and Brexit
I dont want to reclaim vulgarity because it was never mine in the first place Sad

MrLovebucket · 16/09/2017 11:05

According to that chart Relationships and television boards beats AIBU hands down for sweariness.

The fuckers Angry

cordeliavorkosigan · 16/09/2017 11:05

I want to make more MN graphs now ...

PinkSquash · 16/09/2017 11:07

There's a difference in swearing generally and swearing at someone. It is all just words on a screen after all

ClashCityRocker · 16/09/2017 11:08

45 words per 100,000 doesn't seem a lot, really.

How does it compare to other forums where swearing is allowed?

I don't understand the point of the point of the article really.

Have any advertisers pulled out because of the swearing?

50Symptoms · 16/09/2017 11:10

Totally, OP. Brilliantly put!

MN AIBU attracts the weirdest, obnoxious smart-arses and its annoying to have to wade through their sewer posts to read anything interesting or amusing.

Re. Liberalism, liberals have become the most intolerant members of society, and so full of hate and "hate speech" its quite shocking. But the irony escapes them.

In response I see you are getting the usual posts about 'jog on' and men are *s and stop being so "sensitive" ... I wouldn't say "keyboard warriors", just idiots plain and simple.

Smile
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 11:10

I'm not sure what you will get from this OP. I don't think the swearing will have the effect you say.

Personally I dislike the swearing a lot. I don't swear on here or in real life. I don't think swearing on here adds anything to a post. It certainly does not make an incorrect or misguided or downright stupid statement any more credibility.

I don't get the point of angry rants with swearing to show just how angry the poster is. It just makes me think if you were really in such a head of steam omitting unnecessary words would get the point across more quickly. So I suppose for me if anything it actually detracts from the credibility of the poster. I tend not to bother with threads which have swearing in them.

I don't find the made up swear words in the least bit funny.

StickThatInYourPipe · 16/09/2017 11:10

People who call all men counts or twats generally get called out for it

Yes - how dare anyone suggest men are better draculars than women Grin

MrLovebucket · 16/09/2017 11:11

I also think that the data is skewed by the fact whenever the Daily Fail lifts a story from MN (usually AIBU) people tend to do a 'fuck you DM, quote that one you lazy cunts' type of post Smile

50Symptoms · 16/09/2017 11:11

Wow even I'm a bit Shock at the nastiness of the replies. Hiding thread now OP. Suggest you do too Flowers.

Aderyn17 · 16/09/2017 11:12

If grown arse women want to swear, that's our prerogative. Advertisers would do well to note that this is not a site whose members take censorship at all well.
MN needs us as much as it needs advertisers. Without us there is no one to sell to. If this place turns into Netmums, people will leave and MN will have given up it's USP - one Netmums is enough!

Advertisers knew what they were getting when they signed up. We spend as much money as anyone else, which is really all that should matter to advertisers.

Anyway, Bulgari is more vulgar than anything you see on here!

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/09/2017 11:14

I think advertisers, who don't like the content need to stop being so fucking obtuse.

Mumsnetiquette is not their business, when it does not represent a dip in their bottom line.

Andrewofgg · 16/09/2017 11:16

DFOD I know but please what is DKUD?

chirpyburbycheapsheep · 16/09/2017 11:18

Thing is we're all super smart here and science has said smart people swear more so we can't really fucking help it:

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 11:18

The raft of "gawjus huns" are thataway

And the rest of LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle is exactly the kind of post I was thinking of when I mentioned ranty, sweary posts actually carrying less conviction than non sweary posts.

It is also extremely arrogant and insulting to anyone who does not like swearing.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/09/2017 11:32

Can't imagine advertisors giving a fuck tbh

napmeistergeneral · 16/09/2017 11:37

How is calling all men cunts a liberal statement?

If you're worried about mumnset, I'd suggest that the daily mail nicking stories and splashing them all over their hate rag is a greater issue.

vegetariansAreDelicious · 16/09/2017 11:49

Why would I hide the thread?

I love it when people show their true colours. Of course there's no hint of a proper response to my question but plenty of people have shown that actually the word cunt is used fairly as opposed to otherwise.

OP posts:
napmeistergeneral · 16/09/2017 11:55

Can I have a proper response to mine?

MrLovebucket · 16/09/2017 11:55

Of course there's no hint of a proper response to my question

Really?

You asked if the 'race to be liberal' (i.e. swearing) would kill AIBU and/or MN. Lots of people responded that no, it won't because even sweary Mums buy things.

You asked if the swearing was OTT and people have responded either 'yes' or 'no'.

What else would you like to know?

Boulshired · 16/09/2017 11:59

I do find it hard when the most insulting words you can label someone is the slang for the female anatomy, I just cannot understand why women would do this.

DJBaggySmalls · 16/09/2017 12:00

Based on advertising linked to this thread, I just bought this book.

AIBU thinking the race to be 'liberal' will kill AIBU?
MrLovebucket · 16/09/2017 12:04

I swear and I also use an AdBlocker.

I know which of the two is more likely to upset advertisers Smile
