Obviously other party food but some halal/kosher/vegetarian/vegan etc required is just doing strawberry jam acceptable or will I be the talk of school for nothing more?

Mini cheddars are often on offer. They were in Tesco a couple of days ago. Breadsticks are also cheap and kids love them. Just get the super basic ones.

At Holland & Barratt you can get nut-free Wow Butter (tastes just like peanut butter but no nut-allergy risk); non-dairy cheeses; non-dairy cream cheese; vegan sausages. These could fit all the dietary requirements?

theymademejoin · 15/09/2017 21:37

@squoosh - you're obviously a woman of taste😏

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 15/09/2017 22:03

Haven't read the thread but am I the only one who has never had or been offered a jam sandwich?

AnneGrommit · 15/09/2017 22:07

Yes.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 15/09/2017 22:09

I've had bread and jam, toast and jam, croissants and jam, but never in a sandwich.

LineysRunner · 15/09/2017 22:12

Then you've never met my mother.

Unihorn · 15/09/2017 22:18

When you say you've had bread and jam but not a sandwich, what exactly do you mean...?!

sonjadog · 15/09/2017 22:21

Make a jam sandwich tomorrow, IveGot. Throw caution to the wind. Live a little.

Cashncarry · 15/09/2017 22:25

Humous sandwiches? At a kids' party?

Only on mumsnet ...

Meanwhile in the real world - jam sandwiches are absolutely fine OP.

LineysRunner · 15/09/2017 22:31

If DCs are being brought up vegan, or indeed have roots in a large swathe of the middle east and north Africa, they'll cope with the concept and taste of hummus and, you know, bread products.

My kids have middle eastern roots and wouldn't touch a hummus sandwich with a fecking barge pole.

Jam sandwiches on the other hand ...

LineysRunner · 15/09/2017 22:44

Mine love hummus - but got to be in pitta.

LineysRunner · 15/09/2017 22:45

And no-one is saying instead of jam sandwiches. It's as well as. Smile

FAIRY BREAD!!!

To serve only jam sandwiches for a party?
AndromedaPerseus · 15/09/2017 22:53

I think if you serve fairy bread you will be the talk of the school but in a good way!

ManInTheMoonMarigold · 15/09/2017 22:54

I would just not bother with sandwiches. Having just jam sandwiches could make it look like you think an adequate meal is sweet things with sweet things with sweets. Not having them makes it clear that you don't see this as a meal, just some afternoon treats at a party.

user1471598890 · 15/09/2017 23:11

Pretty much all the options people have recommended are not suitable for vegans only exception I can think of is hummus. You need to remember they only eat dairy free spread so sandwiches/cakes/sweets(gelatin) may not be suitable. You can find recipes/ideas/brands of suitable food online. If I were you I would probably just do a tea party type thing (cakes/biscuits/top hats/ fruit platter) as the party is between meal times. You could pick up a few dairy free items for the Sikh and vegan kids. Hopefully won't cost too much. As for the adults tea/coffee n biscuits sounds fine. Then offer round the leftovers, put everything out as a buffet so if the kids don't want it you can offer it to someone else. Saves lots of waste. Shouldn't cost too much and if you like to bake you it would be cheaper. Don't stress it 'll be fine!

FlaviaAlbia · 15/09/2017 23:21

It's a kids party, jam sandwiches are perfectly fine. The last kids party I was at had a choice of jam or nutella sandwiches, the children practically inhaled them.

Rainbunny · 15/09/2017 23:27

Classic cheddar/pickle sandwiches, cucumber red pepper hummus sandwiches, tomato with vegan mayonnaise sandwiches.

If you want to try something a little different I just tried this recipe myself recently and loved it (although I diced a jalapeno pepper and added it in and used garlic flavoured olive oil instead of regular olive oil).

Rhubarbz · 15/09/2017 23:28

Ok if it's afternoon tea why not do it properly? So finger sandwiches with the crusts off, a selection of sweet treats, scones with cream/jam, cup of tea for everyone

LineysRunner · 15/09/2017 23:30

They're 5.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 23:32

@Rhubarbz Grin

If it's afternoon tea, why not do it properly?

Mainly because they're 5 year olds who won't appreciate scones and a cup of tea or the effort in finger sandwiches and a shoestring budget Wink

I'd love it though...
