Obviously other party food but some halal/kosher/vegetarian/vegan etc required is just doing strawberry jam acceptable or will I be the talk of school for nothing more?

Haven't read the thread but am I the only one who has never had or been offered a jam sandwich?

Can't speak for everyone else obviously but how in the heck have you never eaten or been offered a jam sandwich?
Granted, I don't eat them now as an adult, but they're staple kids food!!

toopeoply · 16/09/2017 00:43

My dad is allergic to jam. And most red fruit and veg. Unusual but it happens!

toopeoply · 16/09/2017 00:44

Should say 'dd' obviously!

HiJenny35 · 16/09/2017 00:48

Crist the talk of the playground!!!! Really!!! If someone mentioned this to me I'd laugh, jam sandwiches at a kids party are fine. However I'd go for raspberry not strawberry as strawberry is a high allergy risk. DO NOT do peanuts butter as suggested several times really high allergy risk, vegans won't be able to eat it anyway due to the butter.
I'd do raspberry jam and cheese spread, proper retro and wonderful, you're catering for kids not adults they will love it!

Tazerface · 16/09/2017 00:54

It wouldn't bother me, if my boys even mentioned to me what they ate I class it as a win because at least I haven't had to feed them.

Seriously do people have so much time on their hands that serving jam sandwiches at a party makes them 'the talk of the school for a long time'?

And how is it mean if it's not the only food there? Confused

Bumbledumb · 16/09/2017 01:17

DO NOT do peanuts butter as suggested several times really high allergy risk, vegans won't be able to eat it anyway due to the butter.

You have a point about the allergy risk, but there is no butter in peanut butter. It's normally 100% vegan.

Leavingonajet · 16/09/2017 02:35

I remember being really surprised the first time I discovered peanut butter had no butter!

potatoscowls · 16/09/2017 02:42

You can get vegan cream cheese from Tesco, Sainsbury's etc. Cream cheese and cucumber maybe? Or tomato? Or with jam?

Hummus is a good shout. How about hummus and falafel? (Check the falafel are definitely vegan as some pointlessly contain honey or egg)

Tesco or sainsburys Free From cheddar is excellent in a cheese and tomato sarnie. Buy a tub of Pure or Vitalite spread so you can butter them.

Also get some Linda mccartney/Tesco own brand vegan sausage rolls from the frozen section, they're brilliant.

potatoscowls · 16/09/2017 02:44

What about a vegan sausage sarnie?

BarbaraofSevillle · 16/09/2017 06:35

Perhaps that is why peanut butter (sunpat at least) now calls itself peanut spread not peanut butter to avoid people thinking it has butter in, despite it not appearing on the ingredients list anyway?

MrsPnut · 16/09/2017 07:06

I would do jam sandwiches and marmite sandwiches. Both cheap, both vegan and kosher if you use the Flora pure spread.

Nigella talks about whipping the marmite into the butter and then spreading that on the bread to make it much easier.

Justdontknow4321 · 16/09/2017 07:11

Jam sandwiches at a 5 yr olds party is absolutely fine!

My daughters been to several and it's only been jam, no one said anything and ultimately it's doesn't matter and most of the kids love jam sandwiches!

Sandsunsea · 16/09/2017 07:53

Jam is totally fine! If people want to talk about your party hosting behind your back, they will find fault whatever you do. It's a kids birthday party, jam is fine.

Rhubarbz · 16/09/2017 07:54

Much prefer marmite sandwiches! Genius idea

Afreshstartplease · 16/09/2017 08:09

I think you need minimum of two choices of filling tbh

Floellabumbags · 16/09/2017 08:10

I really fancy a jam sandwich and some hula hoops now.

I wouldn't judge you and DS would be delighted with a "jam sam"

Thirtyrock39 · 16/09/2017 08:13

Totally fine kids never eat the sandwiches anyway although I often sneakily put a few on my kids plates knowing they'll ignore them so I can eat them later so I guess you may be indirectly catering for parents like me!!! Falafels and hummus would go down like a lead balloon with most kids I know

Hulababy · 16/09/2017 08:23

I love a jam sandwich!
I love hummus too but not in a sandwich. For me it's a dip; not keen on it as a sandwich filling!

However teen Dd has never liked a jam sandwich. She's odd!

Though rest assured she loves sugar and sweet stuff and we would never whinge at it's presence at a party.

I work in an infant school and we have parties occasionally - Christmas, Eid, various celebrations. Parents bring in food. My experience for past 9-10 years of being there: the kids mainline crisps, buns and chocolate and we through away a ton of chopped vegetables, dips and sandwiches. These are all things children will happily eat at home in a normal setting but once the word party is involved they all just aim for the 'party food.' Every time.

cluelessnewmum · 16/09/2017 08:27

My dc wouldn't eat jam sandwiches as she's never had it before (I hate jam apart from on scones). I do think it's a rather random choice and if you were only to do one choice I'd do grated cheese and tomatoes, or even just cheese.

I think that sandwiches should be semi healthy with some protein and jam is just sugar so no better than the other party food.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 16/09/2017 08:28

Ok. I'll try a jam sandwich and report back. I think I alway think of a sandwich as savoury. I blame my mum.

Hulababy · 16/09/2017 08:35

No don't buy tomato in a sandwich made on advance. Soggy bread!!!! They never get eaten at school parties.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 16/09/2017 08:45

Verdict: like eating a stale Victoria sponge

BarbarianMum · 16/09/2017 08:46

Was just talking about this this morning. Cheese, ham and jam are the holy trinity of party sandwiches round here. Smile

LineysRunner · 16/09/2017 08:48

I prefer savoury sandwiches too. With crisps in.

AliTheMinx · 16/09/2017 08:57

I would definitely be disappointed with just jam! I usually do ham, cheese and egg, and sometimes tuna, chicken and cucumber. One little boy once asked for Marmite sandwiches :-)
