To serve only jam sandwiches for a party?

Obviously other party food but some halal/kosher/vegetarian/vegan etc required is just doing strawberry jam acceptable or will I be the talk of school for nothing more?

leaving I did similar food wise at my parties this year. Same sandwich choice.

Only one from each of the 2 parties had jam. Incidentally siblings who were both in each of my dc's classes.

Ham was the winner.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 20:20

I definitely can't serve ham... or sausage rolls.

That I'm sure of!

Lots of children eat hummus!! It's really normal nowadays, wasn't around when I was a child but then neither were avocados, blueberries and mango - all of which are staples in our house.

Some children will eat hummus if there is nothing else on offer but not many would choose it at a party. Lots of children wouldn't touch it. Not many families in the UK would consider avocado, blueberries and mango as staples either.

squoosh · 15/09/2017 20:20

Shame on you all.

Only one poster has mentioned rice crispie buns. You cannot have a kids' party without rice crispie buns! They go lovely with a Fruit Shoot.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 20:21

Ok @squoosh tell me how to make these rice crispier buns? I'm now scared of YouTube tutorials

@Roomster101
Quite. I would like to hazard a guess that the hummus and veg eating children reside primarily in and around London. Here in the Welsh valleys I certainly don't eat a lot of avocado.

Salmakia · 15/09/2017 20:23

These are really cheap, easy and accidentally vegan. I make them for kids parties and even meat eaters enjoy them. I tend to find sandwiches are the last thing to go at parties anyway so wouldn't be worried about having loads of choices. I've done parties before with a range of sandwiches the jam all went, no one touched egg. Some kids did like hummus and veg for dipping but not all (I wouldn't do hummus sandwiches myself) all of them ate the fake sausage rolls.

Lot's of children eat Hummus. Do they hell. It's like saying 'my kids love olives'. My DD barely tolerated cabbage, swede and sweet potato until about 10 years old.

squoosh · 15/09/2017 20:25

To make approx. 18 rice krispie buns:

Melt 200g of milk chocolate in the microwave.
Pour in rice crispies
Mix
Spoon into bun cases and allow to dry.

Michelin star worthy is that recipe! Grin They're always the first thing to be snaffled too.

Salmakia · 15/09/2017 20:26

Also to solve the butter issue for vegans you could use flora pure... it's completely plant based but has a nice buttery flavour and on rollback at asda now so only £1 for a 500g tub, even not on offer it isn't mad pricey similar to other spreads really. Good luck.

luckylavender · 15/09/2017 20:26

Jam & cheese would be fine

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 20:26

Oh I know those as chocolate Krispy cake thingymajigs @squoosh

With you now...

Ham: Lots of children are Jewish/Muslim/ Vegetarian/Vegan.. can you imagine the posts on here? "My child ate a ham sandwich at a party"
Cheese: Vegan children.. ditto the possibility of a child accidentally eating one.

Peanuts/hummus: Both potential triggers for allergies and both are banned form the premises at DS2's school, so I can't imagine I'd be popular serving them at a party.
Jam is at least potentially free from all the above issues, and a sugar-rush at a party is probably the least of your worries.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 20:30

Thanks @GerdaLovesLili some got it... some didn't... I've been entertained anyhow and got some other excellent ideas and a little traumatised in the process Grin

OP - it's fine and fun and fit for a party. Ignore the focaccia bread and humus brigade Smile

TopSecretSquirrel · 15/09/2017 20:35

I once served M&S mini subs with a fish finger in each. And crisps. Grin Nothing else savoury. There was near total silence for 15 mins while they ate their way through the whole lot. Nobody complained (to my face). By my standards jam is a great choice.

dairymilkmonster · 15/09/2017 20:35

We have been to a party with only choc spread sandwiches. I did notice (most parties round here are a bit OTT on the healthy stuff), but I would not judge. Parties are hard work, esp for working parents trying to cater for a zillion different dietary requirements!

My personal experience is that kdis don't eat the sandwiches that well, no matter whT the fillings are. Why not do other savoury snacks that are no effort? Various frozen vegan (which tend to fit kosher/halal requirements) 'sausage' rolls available which all got eaten when i did them, also pre cooked pizza (if no kitchen available, can leave cheese off for vegan or use vegan cheese, avoid pork salami etc).

If yuo want to do minimal effort sarnies I would go for cheese, houmous and jam if you want. Use dairy free spread. Check bread for milk products and other requirements, That should cover everyone.

If anyone comes up with a really difficult diet ( I had a dairy and gluten free vegetarian kosher boy one year) - text parents and ask what they like. I then did this boy his own sandwiches on plate, and he could choose which other bits to have. Parents bought him a little cake from home instead of bday cake.

In party bags, i've found yo yo bears seem to fit all diets and almost satisfy haribo-allergic yummy mummies.

Believeitornot · 15/09/2017 20:37

My dd is the fussiest eater In The World.
And she would never eat a jam sandwich. Never.

To be fair the only thing she eats at parties would be a jammy dodger and maybe the crisps.

sleepyhead · 15/09/2017 20:42

Don't bother with sandwiches at all. It's a snack - crisps and a cake is plenty.

GerdaLovesLili · 15/09/2017 20:45

TopSecretSquirrel Dammit! I want a fish-finger sandwich now :-)

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 15/09/2017 20:46

I love a jam sarnie

Pancakeflipper · 15/09/2017 20:49

Jam sarnies always go super quick at the kids parties near us because they are usually on olives and hummous so it's a huge treat. I wouldn't be arsed if that was your only choice of sandwich, though I am partial to those cold scrambled egg ones.

SoftSheen · 15/09/2017 20:56

Round here almost every party has a selection of ham, cheese (grated mild cheddar) and Nutella sandwiches. Most children can eat at least one of those fillings. You could also do some pots of hummus with breadsticks and carrot, cucumber and red pepper sticks to dip in. Providing everything is labelled, that should cater for everybody. All they really want crisps in any case

TheRadiantAerynSun · 15/09/2017 21:06

They're 5. Jam is fine. I reckon i ate 90% of all the jam I've ever eaten when I was 5.

Lemon curd is also good, though not vegan. Lots of kids like marmite, which is vegan freindly (vile though it is)

Bowls of cut up pineapple, strawberries and melon go down well.

Popcorn also works. I served a batch of ikea veggie meatballs at Christmas and they lasted about 12 seconds.

LesbianBadger · 15/09/2017 21:06

I'd grab a tub of dairylea or similar and do cheese spread or jam. It's not much different to the cost of a jar of jam.
