To serve only jam sandwiches for a party?

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 18:03

Obviously other party food but some halal/kosher/vegetarian/vegan etc required is just doing strawberry jam acceptable or will I be the talk of school for nothing more?

WorraLiberty · 16/09/2017 09:08

I would definitely be disappointed with just jam!

But you're not a 5yr old are you? Confused

Seriously, it's just a bit of food in between party games, for kids who will already have eaten lunch and will be eating dinner when they get home Confused

abacuss · 16/09/2017 09:15

It's the thread that keeps giving Grin

boonducks · 16/09/2017 09:23

DS1 (21 now) took jam sandwiches to school for pack up every day for years. Given some nice fresh bread ( white, not wholemeal) everyone in this house will get the jam out.
I guess we are doomed.

JayDot500 · 16/09/2017 09:26

11 pages of heated discussion about jam sandwiches. End times Grin

Floellabumbags · 16/09/2017 09:28

DH put blackcurrant jam on a cheese scone the other day. I draw the line at that kind of behaviour.

Mittens1969 · 16/09/2017 09:35

Neither of my DDs like jam so I wouldn't be impressed at all, sorry but YABU. It's so easy to do cheese, and ham. (Unless you're doing kosher or halal? And cucumber and carrot sticks. I really don't get why you wouldn't.

Mittens1969 · 16/09/2017 09:42

Hummus sandwiches at a children's party? I don't think that many children that age would like that! I'd love it, but not my DDs.

WorraLiberty · 16/09/2017 10:08

Have you read the OP?

lljkk · 16/09/2017 10:11

We haven't even touched on the topic of brown vs.white bread. I find the little monsters won't eat brown if white is on offer, but I hate white (blech).

Mittens1969 · 16/09/2017 10:19

Yes, ok, sorry - it's vegan. I've got very few tips in that case. Hence the hummus, of course. I like the marmite idea, my 5 year old doesn't like it but my 8 year old does.

I've never tried vegan cheese so I can't comment.

Those who don't like jam or marmite can snack on crisps and cucumber and carrot sticks. Nobody really relies on a party to provide a full meal, I certainly don't.

cushioncovers · 16/09/2017 10:30

What's your budget op? Iceland and Lidl are good for cheaper bits.

Kidsarekarma · 16/09/2017 10:35

I'm Shock at those of you who dislike jam! I assume you're talking about that awful pink gloop that is bought 'jam' Grin

I make my own jam and it is deeelicious.

Mittens1969 · 16/09/2017 10:45

@Kidsarekarma, I don't dislike jam, I love it, especially on scones as part of a cream tea. Yummy but very fattening! But my DDs don't like it, and no, I really don't get it. Confused

MrsDustyBusty · 16/09/2017 10:45

A recap. The OP has saved for a party activity and is short of funds now. She's still doing food but is being economical and mindful of food restrictions of some guests so suggests a perfectly nice and normal sandwich.

For those of you registering disgust, you're not coming across as the fancy sophisticates you hope. You sound like the most ghastly guests never to have been asked again. "My children just aren't used to this, OP, their diet is mainly avocado and blueberries. I would be horrified. I mean, they don't even know which end of a jarrrrrm to eat first, that's how much they've never heard of them".

TatianaLarina · 16/09/2017 10:52

Is this still going?

I hated jam as a child and plenty of children prefer savoury food.

TatianaLarina · 16/09/2017 10:55

@Kidsarekarma

My mum makes all kinds of jam - damson, blackcurrant, raspberry etc - and we have Bonne Maman for the rest - I still don't like jam though.

WorraLiberty · 16/09/2017 10:58

Actually I've changed my mind OP. You need to provide every single sandwich option you can think of.

If a kid happens to not like jam sandwiches as part of a small party buffet, you may actually ruin their entire lives by not providing an alternative.

And just think of all those parents who 'wouldn't be impressed' by such a culinary disaster.

You may have to spend the rest of your child's school life, trying to think of other ways to impress them and to wipe this awful experience from their memories.

Is that what you want? Is it? Huh?

abacuss · 16/09/2017 11:06

Indeed!

And if you've got time to post on Mumsnet, you've got time to get a second job and earn enough to offer 87 standard dishes.

Peasant.

sonjadog · 16/09/2017 13:04

What the OP needs to do is run a sandwich bar in one corner of the party. With a choice of 30 toppings and 10 styles of bread.

WhatsThisNow · 16/09/2017 14:09

Toppings??? Hang on, is she doing an open sandwich option? That changes everything!!

Because that makes it bread and jam, which I find infinitely more acceptable than a jam sandwich somehow.

Floellabumbags · 16/09/2017 14:29

they don't even know which end of a jarrrrrm to eat first, that's how much they've never heard of them

I think some posters don't realise that the only difference between jam and conserve is £1.25

KrytensNanobots · 16/09/2017 15:02

I've never had fairy bread, or seen it apart from on here.
It looks awesome. I now feel all deprived.

eBaydrama · 16/09/2017 15:42

I've learned a lot from this thread:

1: I am stupidly entertained by it
2: fairy bread
3: don't use YouTube as a google
3.5: I need to earn lots of money fast but will not prostitute myself to save face on party food
4: if I ever convert to some lifestyle that has dietary restrictions - ignorance will be very hard to cope with. I can't serve ham to those who don't eat pork... or meat Confused

Grin I am very fond of this thread. Thank you all

3.5: I need to earn lots of money fast but will not prostitute myself to save face on party food

Would you consider web cam work to provide a small selection of marmalade?

OhSoggyBiscuit · 16/09/2017 16:01

Don't call it a jam sandwich, call it a organic fruit spread between two slices of freshly baked bread.
