Obviously other party food but some halal/kosher/vegetarian/vegan etc required is just doing strawberry jam acceptable or will I be the talk of school for nothing more?

Well I suppose none of us had better opine on anything in that case! If anecdotal evidence from our own surroundings aren't good enough!!

PumbletonWakeshaft · 15/09/2017 20:03

OMG OP I just watched that video! MY EYES!!!

WhatsThisNow · 15/09/2017 20:04

Sorry OP, that was to the poster who said it was a sweeping statement to say hummus is a normal foodstuff!

MsMarple · 15/09/2017 20:04

Jam sandwiches were the first ones to run out at my 5 year old's party, and they chomped through all of the crisps pretty quickly.

Small triangles of watermelon were also popular - and ticked the healthy option box. I know they are not particularly cheap in themselves, but I got a whole tray full from one watermelon so per-portion it worked out well.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 20:04

Sorry @PumbletonWakeshaft I couldn't cope with being the only one traumatised by it... needed company 😂

Sorry, I would think that completely grim, for my child to be offered jam sandwiches at a party. Worse than fruit shoots.

Grin I think you might get on with my 'sugar free cupcake with cream cheese topping' friend!

KrytensNanobots · 15/09/2017 20:05

Make sure there is no gelatin in the jam - it is made from animal bones, skin etc. Probably non of the special diets - veg/halal/kosher - would be able to eat it.

There's no gelatine in jam Confused
Are you getting confused with jam and jelly? There's gelatine in jelly cubes.
Definitely not any gelatine in jam, it's basically sugar and fruit!

AnnieAnoniMouse · 15/09/2017 20:05

Just do Jam Sandwiches. The kids DS will love them.

FGS anyone who is worried about 'too much sugar' needs to give their head a wobble. It's a Birthday Party Afternoon Tea, ONE SNACK.

Definitely need butter though, so do a separate plate without for the vegans.

It's a SNACK, stop stressing & start focussing on enjoying your DS's party.

Save enough of the budget for a treat for yourself once it's over & he's in bed!

abacuss · 15/09/2017 20:06

What the actual fuck is that video?! Grin

YoshimiBtPR · 15/09/2017 20:07

Worse than fruit shoots.
I can't tell if that's a joke. People are doing mock horror these days over fruit shoots surely?!

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 20:07

Thanks @AnnieAnoniMouse I'm aware I sound OTT stressed now. Tbh DC gone to dads for weekend and slightly lonely and amused by how much response this thread got. Usually mine get about 5/6 replies Grinso entertaining myself planning

Leavingonajet · 15/09/2017 20:08

We had little paper lunch bags, each DC got a carton of juice, small chocolate bar, wrapped slice of cake, packet of French fries and a choice of jam, cheese or ham sandwich. Jam was the most popular followed by cheese. Some kids didn't eat the sandwich at all. I might have a few token other sandwiches, don't feed parents at a kid's party.

forceslover · 15/09/2017 20:09

So much sanctimonious crap spouted on here! IT IS A PARTY, FOR KIDS!!! I expect my kids to eat junk at a party, food they wouldn't get to stuff their faces with normally and fruit shoots! Pious Puritans are obviously still about in 2017! Oliver Cromwell would be proud! Loosen Up!

InsomniacAnonymous · 15/09/2017 20:09

Nuttynoo "If you do get a vegetarian jam as everyone will be able to eat it."

Is there non-vegetarian jam then? Confused

YoshimiBtPR · 15/09/2017 20:10

I may have to depart the thread after watching that video!

AnnieAnoniMouse · 15/09/2017 20:10

fruit kebabs - longish cocktail sticks with fruit pushed on

FFS. At a 5 year olds birthday party?? That's an accident waiting to happen.

As for jam sandwiches being offered being 'Grim' 😂 Whatever.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 20:11

Sorry @YoshimiBtPR and @abacuss it's horrific 😅

Same channel, how to open a can without a can opener Grin

KrytensNanobots · 15/09/2017 20:14

OK, been to loads of parties for kids over the past 14 years.

Staples

  • jam/cheese/ham sandwiches
  • crisps
  • fairy cakes
  • party rings
  • sausage rolls fruit such as sliced cherry tomatoes and cucumber but these usually get ignored by the kids and they just mainline sugar instead.

It's a party though, it doesn't have to be balanced meal and that's half the fun of the party! If you can't pig out on buns and crisps at a party, then when can you? Grin

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 20:16

@abacuss ConfusedConfusedConfusedGrin trust me to find that channel!

Sensitive posters should definitely avoid these links!

greatminds · 15/09/2017 20:16

What about cooking up some cheap cheese and tomato pizzas the night before? (Tesco value/Iceland type) cut them into small slices and kids can eat them cold?

YoshimiBtPR · 15/09/2017 20:16

I co-hosted a party with a couple of DC1s classmates. The food wasn't much fun, but worse were the party bags. The other parents wanted to avoid tat and sweets so each child got a book - a phonics reading book. Beat that for fun!

Tubbyinthehottub · 15/09/2017 20:16

Kids will love jam sandwiches. I do half jam, half cheese at my son's party as he's vegetarian. I am reasonably posh and I don't know kids who would eat hummus sandwiches. It's just not worth offering them, they will get left. Bring on the Pom Bears and Fruit Shoots.

KrytensNanobots · 15/09/2017 20:17

I'd be shocked at jam sandwiches at a party!!!

Jam sandwiches at a 5 year old's party shocker! Confused
(Did you misread jam as crack or something?! )

CaptainBrickbeard · 15/09/2017 20:17

My five year old's party was between lunch and dinner and I served cupcakes. Just cupcakes, nothing else. They weren't sugar free either! I don't care what my kids eat at parties and I'm pretty sure jam sandwiches have been offered at every party they've ever been to, along with millions of sweets. Don't stress about it, OP.
