College and Pubic Hair

Foxtrot92 · 08/09/2017 17:09

My DSister (16) has just started a beauty therapy course in college.

Yesterday she was told by a tutor that everyone is to grow their pubic hair (vagina) so they can practice waxing on each other and develop and understanding of how clients feel.

My DS and most of the other girls are horrified by this and don't want to do it. AIBU to be horrified at this demand? Surely the college can't enforce this on the girls?!

*It's only on mumsnet where people justify calling one body part the name of another as 'terminology'

Terminology doesn't mean using the wrong word*

I bow to your superior intellect. Maybe terminology was the wrong word, please tell me the error of my ways.

Also, I didn't even try to justify the use of the word, I just pointed out that it is deemed a major MN faux pas to refer to the vulva as the vagina.

FluttershysCutieMark · 08/09/2017 19:13

bold fail

goodeggsarehardtocatch · 08/09/2017 19:13

I did an ear piercing course and yes we had to practice on each other, there were girls who refused but most of us got on with it. I also did a course at college were the beauty students would come round and beg you to be their 'models' to practice on Grin I volunteered for nails and massage a lot

iwannapuppy · 08/09/2017 19:13

I can see OPs point tbh. I wouldn't have a problem waxing other people, or even going to a salon for a wax. However I wouldn't want to be told I have to take my underwear off and lie on a table in front of my whole class. It's about being about to make the choice yourself as to where and when a person removes their own underwear.

FlaviaAlbia · 08/09/2017 19:18

buckbeak Anal bleaching?! You've got to be kidding?! Please tell me you're kidding Shock

The ops sister doesnt have to do this. Her sister didnt listen.

A full wax is a different course. This is just bikini line

Because they are 2 different things. You wouldn't call a scrotum as a foreskin or frenulum would you?

Sayyouwill · 08/09/2017 19:26

I'm getting my arms waxed next week. Of course I don't mean my actual arms it's just what I call my legs. I could understand a cutesy name for it although it is cringy for an adult but why refer to a body part by the name of another body part and then have a hissy fit when you are misunderstood?*

This just made me snort wine out my nose.

OP I don't think you know what a vagina is.

Gottagetmoving · 08/09/2017 19:32

Someone once wrote on MN that a woman's bikini was so skimpy you could see her vagina! Grin

TSSDNCOP · 08/09/2017 19:33

I think it should be a pre-condition of the course that you will practice on yourself and your classmates. If you've ever been on the wrong side of a wax done wrong you'd agree. It isn't one of those things you can judge, it's important to get it right or risk hurting your client. I'm always impressed by how matter of fact about the human body my very young (Gimmer) beauticians are. That has to be borne out of confidence and knowledge in ones own body.

The dentist comparison is off, we've most of us been to the dentist enough to know the importance of pain relief and a confident hand. In surgery, likely the patient would be under anaesthetic.

FluttershysCutieMark · 08/09/2017 19:37

No, but you can bet that most people, in general, will call a vulva a vagina in every day conversation. I'm not justifying or defending it, I'm just saying. And on MN some posters take great delight in pretending not to understand what the OP means when they refer to a vulva as a vagina.

BackieJerkhart · 08/09/2017 19:38

When you say nose, do you really mean eye? Grin

I do have to laugh at OP clarifying where the pubic hair was! "everyone is to grow their pubic hair (vagina)" As if we don't know which pubic hair she meant! Grin (even if she did use the wrong word)

BackieJerkhart · 08/09/2017 19:40

but you can bet that most people, in general, will call a vulva a vagina in every day conversation.

Which is exactly the problem and why people correct it. It should be corrected.

13bastards · 08/09/2017 19:43

I've not RTFT (need to top up the wine and grab some popcorn) but my tuppances worth Winkis that it is very possible to have a Hollywood with pants still on.

Sayyouwill · 08/09/2017 19:45

When you say nose, do you really mean eye?

I clearly meant ear. It's what we call our ears around here. God!!!11!!

sashh · 08/09/2017 19:46

I'd be useless, I'm just not hairy. There is a new apprentice where I get my nails done, lady that does my nails and I were joking about her waxing my legs - not been done for 2 years.

On the other hand when I had an op a couple of years ago I asked the medical student shadowing the anesthetist is she wanted to incubate me.

AccrualIntentions · 08/09/2017 19:46

I actually quite enjoy a Hollywood wax Blush

But at the salon I go to they all had to do a separate course because intimate waxing isn't covered on the courses a 16 year old would be doing...

frozenfairy123 · 08/09/2017 20:01

Op is your dsis worried about how her fanny looks? Maybe that should be the next question?
Women don't often see other women's fannys and if you do they are likely to be so airbrushed that it's fairly unusual. Maybe try talking to her?
Personally I wouldn't want someone to wax me there either but the n I would expect to get on with it if that was the course I was doing

ConfessorKahlan · 08/09/2017 20:01

I misread the title of this post and was expecting to read about someone making a collage from pubic hair.

FizzyGreenWater · 08/09/2017 20:04

That's the coursework element ConfessorKahlan

Fecho · 08/09/2017 20:09

This totally.

PollyFlint · 08/09/2017 20:09

Are you your sister's legal guardian, OP?

If you are, I'm sure if you contact the college they will reassure you that - obviously - they aren't going to forcibly wax your sister's genitals without her consent. They will put your mind at rest.

If you're not, it's not up to you to worry about it: your sister's parents are the ones who need to sort out this misunderstanding.

Yellowbird54321 · 08/09/2017 20:12

Sorry not RTFT but I'm just wondering why they don't have a plastic hairy vulva model to practice on? Y'know, like a labial girls world Grin

hotchocolatepop · 08/09/2017 20:16

I'm afraid this is part and parcel of the course.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 08/09/2017 20:18

hot forcing someone to have their pubic hair waxed, should not be "part and parcel" of any course.
