Which pieces of music do you find really moving?

Was just thinking about this, and would be interested to hear what you all think.

There are loads of pieces that I find hugely moving. I was thinking back to when I watched Dunkirk at the cinema, and I found the version of Nimrod played on the soundtrack really moving. I (and most of the audience, I think) were crying a little bit by that point. I also absolutely love I vow to thee my country, although I know people think it's a bit controversial. I think it's probably my favourite hymn.

The Day Thou Gavest - the line "the voice of prayer is never silent.." gets me every time.
The Last Post
Nimrod - Elgar
No Matter What - Boyzone my daughter who was horrifically bullied to a point of attempting suicide and has just achieved a First with Honours in Forensic Psychology
Feel My Love - Adele my son was seriously assaulted in 2010 then diagnosed with severe PTSD and ADHD. I couldn't reach him.
Just The Way You Are - Bruno Mars my 2nd daughter who doesn't know how fabulous she is.
Firework- Katy Perry for my 2nd son who (never deliberately) gets sidelined by the dramas of the others.
They Don't Know - Kirsty McColl for my husband. It says it all.
Angels - Robbie Williams for my 3rd daughter. She's 5 now. The others are in their teens and 20's. She literally saved our family. She's our guardian angel.

Lots of pop songs, for varying reasons.

My daughter was born on the day that the composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davis died.

I was listening to PM with Eddie Mayer during the (very peaceful) labour, and he devoted the last few minutes of the show to Farewell To Stromness.

So that was the background to my first lovely moments with my girl. It was snugly, goosebumpy bliss.

noeffingidea · 05/09/2017 13:36

Schubert's Ave Maria
Everyone says hi - David Bowie.

anniroc · 05/09/2017 13:48

Kate Bush - each album has a track that makes me blub regularly. Particularly Moments of Pleasure and This Woman's Work.

FineSally · 05/09/2017 13:50

too many to list really, (I think I'm too sentimental), but those that spring to mind immediately include many already mentioned.

Classical:
Beethoven's Appassionata, esp. the second movement
Lascia ch’io pianga, Handel
Bruch Violin concerto no. 1

Modern/Pop:
Father & Son by Cat Stevens
Con Te Partiro, the Andre Bocelli version (hate the English versions)
These Are The Days Of Our Lives - Queen
Who knows where the time goes - Fairport Convention

I associate certain songs with the friends whose funerals they were played at, like Fields of Gold and In the arms of an angel. I can't sing The Day that thou Gavest without getting a lump in my throat.

Tailypo · 05/09/2017 14:02

Gosh all of your choices are incredible - I've got lots of new music to discover!

And for everyone who's posted personal stories about the connections they've got with the songs, Flowers for you.

The Exogenesis Symphony by Muse, especially the last part "Redemption". It's the most beautiful piece of music and has a kind of heartbreaking and prescient story behind it. Total skingasm and makes me well up every time.
Nimrod.
The Bridge at Khazad Dum from Lord of the Rings.
Pretty much the whole soundtrack of Gladiator.

storynanny · 05/09/2017 14:33

Wow, so many lovely tunes we all like. Intetesting how lots of us have chosen same as others. You have reminded me of others that really touch me too such as
Fields of gold
Father and son
All of Tchaikovskys symphonies.

Many pieces remind me of playing in the county youth orchestra in the 70's and having crushes on various players ( mozart clarinet concerto, mozart horn concerto, violin concertos by various composers, brittens soiree musicale, brahms academic festival overture)
Im off to remind myself of some of the others mentioned on this thread.
Thank you

storynanny · 05/09/2017 14:36

Im also updated my funeral list. Not being morbid just want my favourites noted down!
I also live "thank you for the music" Abba as it sums up my love of music, not anywhere near goid enough to be a pro just a keen amateur

storynanny · 05/09/2017 14:38

Some people find images or smells really evocative but I can conjure up specific memories by particular pieces of music.

Tailypo · 05/09/2017 14:45

Ooh I've just remembered another one - a modern one this time! Promesses, by Dimmi.

It's really dancey, so it's really motivating, but the start samples Barack Obama's re-election speech and it just feels so powerful and stirring.

Oh and for another classical one, In Terra Pax by Vivaldi. Was played a few years ago at a friend's funeral.

I have so many, but the one that springs to mind is I Giorni - Ludovico Einaudi, it was played by a string quartet whilst I walked down the aisle at my wedding so it holds a very strong, lovely memory for me :)

Sassandballs · 05/09/2017 15:16

Caledonia, makes me cry every time...

Giraffey1 · 05/09/2017 15:40

It's interesting how music can affect us ... I find that it's sometimes not just the music, but also the circumstances. Fro example, I find Mozart's clarinet concerto moving as we had an excerpt form it at my dad's funeral. I can't hear te music now without making the association to the funeral.

The first time I heard Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs I was moved to tears, but I think this was because it was being played as part of a commentary about the Holocaust. Now if I listen to it, I still enjoy the music but don't feel moved in the same way.

I can remember listening to Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending on a particularly beautiful day when my life was feeling good, and again, I felt really emotional ...
