Which pieces of music do you find really moving?

Was just thinking about this, and would be interested to hear what you all think.

There are loads of pieces that I find hugely moving. I was thinking back to when I watched Dunkirk at the cinema, and I found the version of Nimrod played on the soundtrack really moving. I (and most of the audience, I think) were crying a little bit by that point. I also absolutely love I vow to thee my country, although I know people think it's a bit controversial. I think it's probably my favourite hymn.

Lovely thread ....
Most of mine have been mentioned but there's also the Parting Glass -Clancy Brothers and the harvest hymn 'come ye thankful people come'. Our harvest isn't finished yet but come the end of it it's always moving to sing those hymns at the harvest festival.

Andrewofgg wow that must've been incredible seeing Jacqueline du Pré! She was amazing.

DellaPorter · 08/09/2017 21:50

The theme music from Braveheart and the music from Lion King when ghost Mufasa is in the sky. I just get goosebumps

SabineUndine · 08/09/2017 23:16

Ode to joy. Lark ascending. Jerusalem. But above all, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune from Holst's Planets. There's a bit in Neptune that puts my soul through the wringer.

vichill · 08/09/2017 23:29

Into my arms - Nick Cave. For the line "but i believe in love..."
Do you realise?- Flaming Lips. Bit of a sad cry but life affirming.
My baby just cares for me - Nina Simone. I remember dancing and falling in love with my first newborn in the kitchen to this.
O Holy night - Sublime. Christmas isn't Christmas until I have sobbed over a mulled wine at the line "born to be our friend".

ppleasebob · 08/09/2017 23:34

So many great songs on here, and so many more I sob to but the one that gets me the most (my funeral song to be!) is:

Waltz Away Dreaming by George Michael and Toby Bourke (about the death of his wife)

I'm welling up just thinking about it!

TamzinGrey · 08/09/2017 23:35

Dido's Lament by Purcell from Dido and Aeneas
Solveig's song by Grieg from Peer Gynt

AmberCurtain · 08/09/2017 23:37

jann tiersen is a wonderful composer!

I also love pas de deux from the nutcracker

MissClareRemembers · 08/09/2017 23:38

Miserere - Allegri. Every time i listen to it, it feels like I hold my breath the whole way through. It's literally breath taking!
Nimrod. I can't speak whilst listening to it.
Song To The Siren - This Mortal Coil version. Just achingly beautiful
Aniron - Enya. This is on the Fellowship Of The Ring soundtrack.
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel
The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel
This Woman's Work - Kate Bush
Moments Of Pleasure - Kate Bush. She sings about people she has loved who have died. Gorgeous

tinytoucan · 08/09/2017 23:40

Hans Zimmer- Planet Earth II Suite
Sleeping at Last- Saturn

malloo · 08/09/2017 23:40

So many but two spring to mind:
Bloodstains by Passenger with Katie Noonan and
The Long Road by Eddie Vedder with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (from Dead Man Walking movie)

semideponent · 08/09/2017 23:41

Finzi's Eclogue - the kind of music that makes you stop everything to listen

HelloPossums · 08/09/2017 23:43

Song for Athene. Absolutely beautiful.

JillTheReckless · 09/09/2017 00:06

JOHNNY CASH - HURT. He was close to the end of his life when he recorded this and it's just so moving.

DEBUSSY - CLAIR DE LUNE (athough I read recently that it's in Twilight - which I have no desire to see - so that's sullied it a bit, as I'd hate anyone to think I was a Robert Pattinson fan! Grin)

Two songs that I don't think I've ever heard a recorded version of, but which make me blurb when I sing them myself are the hymn 'IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER' (no idea why) and 'MY BONNY LIES OVER THE OCEAN' - which my mum used to sing to me when I was a child (and which made me want to cry even then), and which I to sing to my kids now.

Oh yeah, and EDELWEISS makes me blub too!

And any gospel type version of AMAZING GRACE

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 09/09/2017 16:31

Oh Yes, Jill Hurt, sets me off too, it is all in his voice.

Mother by John Lennon gets me.
"Mother you had me, but I never had you" is the line which feels like a punch, as my mum left when I was 3.

barefoofdoctor · 09/09/2017 16:36

Bright Eyes off Watership Down. Bloody hell it makes me sob my heart out! That True Romance song by Hans Zimmer. Suedehead by Morrissey followed by Every Day is Like Sunday. If I've had a skinful of wine and listen to those two Morrissey songs then i'm a lost cause.

barefoofdoctor · 09/09/2017 16:39

and of course Johnny Cash Hurt :(

MrsFring · 09/09/2017 17:57

Blue Sky Blues by Ryan Adams, my song to my daughter.
Sea Song by Robert Wyatt, a love song to his wife.
I can't give everything away by Bowie. His last ever song...
Exit Music by Radiohead.
Almost everything by Sigur Ros.

Steaksauce · 09/09/2017 18:06

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
Hurt - the Johnny Cash version (I love the original but it's not quite as emotional!)
American Trilogy by Elvis. My dad absolutely loved this song and whenever I listen to it I can almost hear his voice singing along (almost Sad)

Androidsdreamofelectricsheep · 09/09/2017 18:09

Finlandia

GabsAlot · 10/09/2017 11:07
