Which pieces of music do you find really moving?

Was just thinking about this, and would be interested to hear what you all think.

There are loads of pieces that I find hugely moving. I was thinking back to when I watched Dunkirk at the cinema, and I found the version of Nimrod played on the soundtrack really moving. I (and most of the audience, I think) were crying a little bit by that point. I also absolutely love I vow to thee my country, although I know people think it's a bit controversial. I think it's probably my favourite hymn.

John Denver - Annie's song.

I struggled to bond with DD and also worked way too hard after she was born. I remember hearing this song as I was coming to the end of a big project, stress levels going down, and felt as if I was actually seeing my daughter for the first time. She was around 5 months old. I just felt elated with gratitude and emotion and danced around the kitchen with her, laughing and crying.

Nearer my God to thee played on strings. It's in Titanic, played by the ships' string quartet as she's going down -sob!

ChelleDawg2020 · 05/09/2017 16:08

Vincent - Don McLean
Suicide is Painless - Manic Street Preachers version
Heart to Hang Onto - Ronnie Lane & Pete Townshend

A Coral Room by Kate Bush.
So so sad and dedicated to her Mother.

peachgreen · 05/09/2017 16:20

I had to restrict myself to just one because I could honestly be here all day, but Gold (Acapella) from the musical Once always, always makes me cry. I walked down the aisle to it and everyone was in floods.

Ooh, also it's already been mentioned but Benedictus by Carl Jenkins - we had this played at our wedding too (on a solo cello

Yet another vote for Barber's 'Adagio For Strings', also the purely vocal 'Agnus Dei' version.
Libera - 'Mother Of God' by John Tavener
And talking of Tavener, when I hear his ''Song For Athena it enthrals me - its the music that was sung 20 years ago in Westminster Abbey when Diana's coffin was carried down the aisle after her funeral service.
Also 'O Magnum Mysterium' by the Nordic Chamber Choir is worth seeking out.

I was so in love for the whole of 1971 with the soloist in mozarts clarinet concerto in our youth orchestra. Safly to no avail as he only had eyes for the male percussionist so I discovered years later. I still think of my teenage anguish whenever i hear it.
Whoever mentioned Don maclean Vincent, I love it, one of the first singles I bought.

Beethoven's entire 6th and 9th symphonies
Mozart's Requiem - Confutatis and Lacrimosa
Bedrich Smetana - Ma Vlast (Die Moldau)
The Do - On my Shoulders
All Along the Watchtower - Bear McCreary's version
X Japan - Endless Rain
Janis Joplin's voice in general
Both Donna Noble's and Clara Oswald's themes in Doctor Who

Tailypo · 05/09/2017 18:08

Just thought of another one - not sure if it's already been mentioned though.

The main theme from the film Jean de Florette (my Dad loves the film, as did a French teacher I had in sixth form, so heard it quite a lot! Grin) Also the music from La Forza del Destino by Verdi, which inspired the theme I think.

The Last Farewell by Roger Whittaker has been making me cry since 1975.
Also Song For Athene by John Taverner is guaranteed to send shivers down my spine.

Ihatemen00 · 05/09/2017 18:47

My favourites are,

The sound of silence by Disturbed
Hallelujah by Pantomix

Got to be those two versions though

hippadoppaloppagorillapig · 05/09/2017 18:59

The hymn How Great Thou Art - it was a deceased family member's favourite. We had it at DD2's christening not long after they died and I was in bits, couldn't sing a word of it. I'm welling up now in work at the thought of it.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 05/09/2017 19:14

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence - Ryuichi Sakamoto
Down in the park (piano version) - Gary Numan
Chariots of fire - Vangelis

13bastards · 05/09/2017 19:20

'You will not touch him' from the Miss Saigon soundtrack, I cry everything I hear it.

Abide with me- makes me think of the 2005 bombings tribute at the Olympic opening ceremony

A lot of the hunger games music- especially 'I need you'

ZorbaTheHoarder · 05/09/2017 19:24

No words needed!

ZorbaTheHoarder · 05/09/2017 19:33

I think that this is an incredibly moving version of an incredibly beautiful song:

LittleWingSoul · 05/09/2017 19:35

George Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue

LittleWingSoul · 05/09/2017 19:36

Also, as my user name might suggest... Jimi Hendrix Little Wing Walked down then aisle to it. Couldn't be anything else!

topcat2014 · 05/09/2017 19:37

Canon in D, and anything by Elgar.
even Jerusalem

noeffingidea · 05/09/2017 19:42

Mama, and Johnny boy, by Melanie Safka. Both very sad.
On a more positive note, O fortuna always gets my heart racing.

storynanny · 05/09/2017 20:03

Yes to some of the songs from Miss Saigon

tonsattingforbjudes · 05/09/2017 20:14

Purcell. So beautiful.

Poshjock · 05/09/2017 20:55

A lot of my mum's favourite songs upset me now. Nimrod, You Raise Me Up- Josh Groban, Slipping through my Fingers - Abba.

The first song I cried at was Honey - Bobby Goldsbro - Just listen to the words! I think I was about 12.
I love Spiegel I'm Spiegel - Also Part - It's used a lot in TV for moving pieces.

My weird one is Beyond The Blue Horizon - Lou Christie. It was used in an advert YEARS ago, but I was listening to it when I found out a good friend was killed in a collision. Shortly after my mum died and when I listened to this song it reduced me to tears. From being a song about new beginnings and hope it became, to me, about death and moving to the realm beyond. It still makes me cry to this day. Link =
