Which pieces of music do you find really moving?

Was just thinking about this, and would be interested to hear what you all think.

There are loads of pieces that I find hugely moving. I was thinking back to when I watched Dunkirk at the cinema, and I found the version of Nimrod played on the soundtrack really moving. I (and most of the audience, I think) were crying a little bit by that point. I also absolutely love I vow to thee my country, although I know people think it's a bit controversial. I think it's probably my favourite hymn.

There's a Mozart piece for a clarinet quintet that has a slow movement that almost makes my heart stop, it's so lovely.

And Soave Sia Il Vento from Cosi Fan Tutti makes heart soar.

Un Bel Di Vedremo from Madam Butterfly. In fact the whole thing, if I have time to listen right through to the end, gives me this angry sad feeling that's very motivating if I've been feeling a bit off.

Also, the sunrise from Peter Maxwell Davies' Orkney Wedding with Sunrise.

Dido's lament from Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.
Abide with me accompanied by brass band and getting slower and slower at Remembrance Day.

The Lark Ascending - Vaughan Williams
Eatnemen Vuelie - Frode Fjellheim (the piece of music at the start of Disney Frozen)

Power of love by Frankie goes to Hollywood. Just so much passion in that song. I especially love the "this time we go sublime" bit. Gives me goosebumps Every time and it really pissed me off when some tinkly sanitised overly breathy cover version of it was released and completely missed the point of the song.

FineOldCriminals · 05/09/2017 08:17

We have always used Nimrod as a recessional at family funerals, so I've always found it moving to hear in other contexts. I'm also a fan of Purple Electric Violin Concerto.

Miserere by Allegri. The first time I heard it it sent shivers up my spine and made me cry. Still does every time I listen to it.

ShatnersWig · 05/09/2017 08:22

Sposa son disprezzata - giacomelli
Would go well on the Relationship board. A woman who still is desperately in love with her husband even though he's betrayed her.

ShutUpBaz · 05/09/2017 08:30

Zombie by The Cranberries

Sound of Silence by Disturbed

Lark Ascending

KoolKoala07 · 05/09/2017 08:34

Ludovico Einaudi - I Giorni
I think it's a beautiful piece of music.

Mulberry72 · 05/09/2017 08:35

Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Eva Cassidy (Played at my DM's funeral and even just the opening notes set me off)
Land of Hope & Glory (DM & I always used to watch LNOTP together and sing along)
Going Home (Local Hero Theme) - Dire Straits.

To quote from the description in the youtube link below, "Tomaso Albinoni - Adagio en sol menor, in G minor". Except that it wasn't by him, see wikipedia link.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adagio_in_G_minor

The Adagio in G minor for violin, strings, and organ continuo is a neo-Baroque composition popularly attributed to the 18th-century Venetian master Tomaso Albinoni, but actually composed by 20th-century musicologist and Albinoni biographer Remo Giazotto, purportedly based on the discovery of a manuscript fragment by Albinoni.

Porz Goret by Yann Tiersen. There's a chap who plays it on a keyboard in the middle of Manchester sometimes and I can't move until he's finished.

Nick Cave's most recent album Skeleton Tree, released after the death of his son. I've loved him for thirty years and the pain in his voice now is heartbreaking.

MsVestibule · 05/09/2017 08:43

Just thinking of Slipping Through My Fingers makes me cry. I first heard it while watching Mamma Mia; Meryl Streep sang it with such passion and heartache. My lovely DD is 10 and swears she's never leaving home, ever, and she'll always want to come on holiday with us, but I know it's only a matter of time...

I also love Time To Say Goodbye. The instrumental version was playing in Las Vegas on my then new DH's 40th birthday while we were sitting in a lovely restaurant in the Bellagio, watching the amazing fountains ❤️.

imonaplane · 05/09/2017 08:45

Left Outside Alone by Anastacia was the favourite song of a dear friend of mine who committed suicide and was played at the funeral. I can't listen to it without crying.

Helendee · 05/09/2017 08:49

'It was a very good year' sung by Sinatra, beautiful music and slightly melancholic looking back over a lifetime, also the Patrick Doyle composition called 'Harry in Winter' from Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, never fails to make me cry.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 05/09/2017 08:51

The Lark Ascending by R.Vaughan Williams

Also Slipping Through My Fingers. Dd1 got married last month During the wedding morning, it kept popping into my head.

Firesuit · 05/09/2017 08:54

Abide with Me - for me far more moving than any other funeral hymn.
Wires by Athlete - mentioned earlier, and this one is very personal.

Corcory · 05/09/2017 08:57

Showandtell · 05/09/2017 09:00
