Which pieces of music do you find really moving?

Was just thinking about this, and would be interested to hear what you all think.

There are loads of pieces that I find hugely moving. I was thinking back to when I watched Dunkirk at the cinema, and I found the version of Nimrod played on the soundtrack really moving. I (and most of the audience, I think) were crying a little bit by that point. I also absolutely love I vow to thee my country, although I know people think it's a bit controversial. I think it's probably my favourite hymn.

The Pearl Fishers- Bizet.
Intermezzo Cavalleria Rusticana- Mascagni.
Adagio for Strings- Barber.
Traumerei-Schumann.
Schindler's List theme.
Second movement Beethoven's 1st Piano Concerto.
Anything by a Welsh choir, particularly a good hymn .

Definitely agree with Highland Cathedral
Sunset (DS used to play this at Cadets so reminds me of him when younger)
Nimrod
Pachabel's Canon (played at funerals of D in Laws and DF as coffin came in)
Zadok the Priest
I vow to thee my country
Jerusalem
Bridge Over Troubled Water
You've got a friend

The Old Rugged Cross. It was my grandpa's song. It was featured in an episode of Doctor Who a few years ago and I ended up sobbing.

Monkeybunkey · 05/09/2017 09:46

Nimrod - my mum's coffin left the church to this
Abide with me - sung at every family funeral I went to as a kid. Have to go out of the room at the start of the FA Cup Final or I'll cry!
Libera Me from Verdi's Requiem
The slow movement of Mozart's clarinet concerto
The Last Post
Ave Maria - Schubert

There are probably more but I'm sat at work welling up, so I'd better stop!

Frescoed · 05/09/2017 09:59

Lots of the pieces already mentioned. Plus:
Mahler Symphony No. 5, especially the Adagietto (if you like Nimrod or the Barber Adagio, you'll probably like this)
Adagio from Brahms Violin Sonata
Brahms Symphony No. 2
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 (Brief Encounter!)
Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2, especially the clarinet solo in the Adagio
Slow things played by brass bands
The bit in La Boheme when Mimi dies

There must be loads of others too.

I also love the Welsh National Anthem and 'Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer' - especially when sung loudly by a Welsh Male Voice Choir! Ahh me too Ali :)

FlippertyJibbet · 05/09/2017 12:04

Bachs fugue in D minor. My grandpa always told me how his father would cry whenever he heard this. He'd just seen pretty much everyone he knew killed in the Somme and was recovering from injury in Reims. He was walking round the ruins of the cathedral and someone was playing it on what was left of the organ. He was only 17 at the time, the poor fucker.

Wherearemymarbles · 05/09/2017 12:07

More modern but only a selection

Redemption song, Bob Marley
Sarah, Bob Dylan
Street spirit, radiohead
Paris, Texas, Ry cooder

Nimrod played at the Remembrance Sunday service from the Cenotaph always has me in bits.
Also Whitacre 's Lux aurumque, a lovely choral piece.

Todaywashorrible · 05/09/2017 12:12

Pachelbel Canon but also placemarking so I can check out all these later Grin

TheGentleWoman · 05/09/2017 12:16

I find it incredibly moving to listen to Speaking Unto Nations (Beethoven's Symphony No 7-11) as heard in the film 'The King's Speech'

I could easily cry every time I hear it.

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 05/09/2017 12:20

Nimrod - but it has to be played by a brass band - it's my home area (Worcestershire/Shropshire/Herefordshire) encapsulated, with the beautiful rolling countryside...
Adagio for Strings - memories of it being played at the Proms, conducted by Leonard Slatkin, just after 9/11. You could feel the waves of grief and loss coming out of the television...
Slipping Through My Fingers - has me in tears. Every. Single. Time.
Say Goodnight, Not Goodbye - Beth Neilsen Chapman (to be played for my children at my funeral)
Over The Rainbow - Eva Cassidy

Mellington · 05/09/2017 12:31

The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughn Williams.

So beautiful.
