take your thermals!

Notevilstepmother · 03/09/2017 17:23

Edinburgh is lovely. Jenners used to have a massive massive Christmas tree, not been for a few years so I don't know if it's still there?

LuLuuuuuuu · 03/09/2017 17:23

Haha thank you Dumbledore , Ill add them to list.

What date would you be going?

I don't live in Scotland, but I've been to Edinburgh in November and December. It's cold, though.

StoorieHoose · 03/09/2017 17:24

No everything will be shut. Of course stuff will be open!!! It's not some provincial town you walk round. Would you ask if London would be shut in December?

Weather will be pish though

Nonibaloni · 03/09/2017 17:24

All time is tourist time in Edinburgh. May well be cold but could be fine. All the tourist attractions are open and there's Christmas markets in addition.
Is there anything in particular you wanted to see it do? I'll see if I know any specifics.

Auldspinster · 03/09/2017 17:24

There's a winter festival on throughout December and masses to do.

LuLuuuuuuu · 03/09/2017 17:24

Thank You Not .

We would go to some bars whilst there , being over 18 (or even 21 in some places I note) and the Castle etc .

Ideally I would like us to be able to get to Greenock for a day or half a day as my gt gt grandfather (and the ancestors prior to him) were from there. Is that close enough by train ?

They promote festivities from mid November, lights on George Street etc.

Hi-I hate the cold but still had an amazing time in Edinburgh in mid January. Hotels were a lot cheaper than at peak times and loads of things to do. The Ghost Tour was really atmospheric in the snow-one of the best bits of outdoor theatre I have ever been to!

Nonibaloni · 03/09/2017 17:27

Greenock and back would be an entire day, and remember it will be dark in the morning and prob dark by 4 on the way back.
Bars will be most definitely open, and very festive.
Jenners still do a tree as does the mound.
Castle, palace, museums and galleries will be open and great for heating up.

RaymondinaReddington · 03/09/2017 17:29

Edinburgh is fabulous in December. Christmas market will be open with fairground and wonderful European treats.

Loads to do including shopping, galleries and museums, Festival of Lights. Camera obscura is a must.

53rdWay · 03/09/2017 17:29

It's very tourist time. Big Christmas market which is very busy that time of year, but nice if you like that stuff. Ferris wheel expensive but great views over the city. Loads of Christmas lights up everywhere.

Greenock is about 2 hours away by train, change at Glasgow.

JemmyBloocher · 03/09/2017 17:30

Edinburgh is the best place in the world in December.

feebeemee · 03/09/2017 17:31

Edinburgh is gorgeous in December, it's one of favourite places in the world at any time of year but is just magical in the winter months (just take plenty of layers).

EastMidsMummy · 03/09/2017 17:34

Wow. Has someone just asked if the capital of Scotland will be open in the run-up to Christmas and/or Hogmanay?

Dec is a really popular time to visit Edinburgh so it'll be good (and busy and expensive). Xmas stuff starts from mid Nov to end of first week in Jan. Xmas markets and rides in princes St gardens and St. Andrews square, all the shops and hotels and bars will be festively bedecked, see the Dome especially. Edinburgh's always cold but buy a llama wool scarf and mulled wine both at German market = sorted.

53rdWay · 03/09/2017 17:37

It's also not THAT cold, honest! Barely got below freezing last year.

zukiecat · 03/09/2017 17:37

The Christmas Markets are awesome!

I love Edinburgh, it's my most favourite place in the world and I love to visit as often as I can (I'm in NE Scotland)

It's not that cold! DD2 and me visited in November and the weather was gorgeous, we were outside drinking coffee, it was so warm

Edinburgh doesn't "close" and yes, Jenners Christmas Tree is always beautiful

Babywearinggeek · 03/09/2017 17:37

We only ever go in December. It's amazing at Christmas time

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 03/09/2017 17:39

YANBU - I love Edinburgh and imagine it would be a lovely time to visit - Yes it might be wet and/or cold but as long as you are prepared then that shouldn't a problem.

The train journey up the NE coast is lovely
