Greenock is near Glasgow. You'd have to get the train to Glasgow and then change. No offence to anyone from Greenock but it's not the prettiest part of Scotland Grin.

mintich · 03/09/2017 17:42

@eastmidsmummy I know! There was a major eye roll from me. It's not a little seaside town ffs

scotjls · 03/09/2017 17:50

Edinburgh is brilliant at Christmas time, closest thing the UK has to the European Christmas scene i.m.o. craft and food markets, mulled wine, rides, street illuminations, the castle is stunning all lit up in the dark, cosy pubs a plenty...go, you'll love it.

scotjls · 03/09/2017 17:50

Outdoor ice rink...

squoosh · 03/09/2017 17:51

It's really not that cold!

wannabestressfree · 03/09/2017 17:52

When do train tickets go on sale? How far in advance :)

squoosh · 03/09/2017 17:53

Greenock is a bit rough but it's actually in a very pretty geographical spot.

Snapespeare · 03/09/2017 17:53

Go to the zoo! There's a festival of light thing with 450 giant Chinese lanterns. It looks incredible!! lanterns

Justfeelsad · 03/09/2017 17:56

I live in Edinburgh, everything will be open, and it's a magical to visit.

BoysofMelody · 03/09/2017 17:57

I can endorse Edinburgh just before or just after Christmas. I first came here in January, fell in love with the place instantly, so much so I moved here.

I would give Hogmanay itself a miss though, the street party is overpriced and miserable if it rains.

Apart from the bad winters of 2009/2010, it isn't that cold, if you're used to a winner in the rest of the UK. (I am constantly baffled by the number of Australian visitors who turn up complaining of the cold, you've gone from summer in the southern hemisphere to the northern tip of an island in the North Atlantic, in winter. What were you expecting? Tropical palms?)

I would say, don't bank on seeing much daylight. Some days it doesn't really get fully light at all. It doesn't bother me.

I'd recommend staying in and around the Shore area in Leith, great bars, restaurants and architecture, whilst avoiding the tourist traps and blatant rip offs in the city centre. Plus the 35 bus gets you into the centre in 15 to twenty minutes or so.

Also, I wouldn't bother paying to see the inside of the castle, it is way overpriced for what it is. It is worth going up to the Esplanade to get the view, but the castle interior isn't worth it. The Palace of Holyroodhouse is a bit gloomy in winter so not really worth the bother. Sumner time when the grounds are open, it is probably more worthwhile.

Going to see the Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith Harbour is much more worthwhile and better value (and I say that as an anti monarchist). The parliament is worth a visit too and the tours are great there.

But there isn't a bad time of year to come to Edinburgh, but my favourite time of year is April May or early June. But you can have a great time whenever you come.

Namelesswonder · 03/09/2017 18:03

Edinburgh is a major tourist destination all year round but peaks for the festivals in August and the Christmas festivities which run December to January. Book a hotel now as it gets very busy.

Oops4 · 03/09/2017 18:07

Edinburgh is amazing at Christmas, absolutely gorgeous

dollydimplenotsosimple · 03/09/2017 18:07

eliza

How polite....it's a shithole Wink

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 03/09/2017 18:07

Yeah it's not really that cold. It's dark, and windy, but there's not usually snow at that time of year (and we've not had a lot of snow at all the last couple of years really).

Oops4 · 03/09/2017 18:12

I agree, Greenock has nice views but there's really not much to justify a whole day. You can get a train to Glasgow then another to Greenock if you really want but if you're going to make the journey I'd probably combine it with something else on the west coast.

MissEliza · 03/09/2017 18:12

TBH Dolly the only time I've been there was at age of 10 to watch my brother play rugby and it was f*#king freezing and wet and the clubhouse ran out of pies!! I've never liked the place since!

dementedma · 03/09/2017 18:15

agree with others. Cold but not Baltic but it will be dark and probably raining... Christmas market is fun but packed so might not be great with a wee one. There is a carousel and big wheel and an outdoor ice rink. The lights in George St are lovely and there is a big Christmas tree on the mound and a lovely one in Jenners. There will be good things on at the theatre - we have often been to see The Snowman or The Nutcracker.
Castle is overpriced but worth a visit if you have never been before. If you go at lunchtime you can watch the firing of the one o clock gun. Tourists jump, locals check their watches... Greenock is indeed a shit hole.

Pangur2 · 03/09/2017 18:21

Watching with interest. I'm from Ireland and live in London, but absolutely love Edinburgh. Half thinking of moving up in a couple of years and starting to do a bit of research. In regard to the weather, is it fresh cold like in Sweden, or rainy damp cold like horrid days in London/Dublin? Or a mix?

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 03/09/2017 18:23

I'd say a mix, but increasingly it feels like we get a lot more rainy damp than fresh and freezing, which is a shame. Maybe it's my imagination or maybe it's a climate change thing. Nothing beats a cold clear day, in my view!

squoosh · 03/09/2017 18:26

Pangur it's damp like Ireland.

Thissameearth · 03/09/2017 18:28

I've checked for festive theatre fix already Scottish Ballet are doing the Nutcracker at festival theatre. I've seen recently so skipping for Arabian nights at the Lyceum (I love 1001 nights so don't care if not immediately festive).

Groovee · 03/09/2017 18:29

There's loads to do that is Christmassy and all the attractions are open too.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 03/09/2017 18:30

I'm a genuine Edinbugger - grew up, studied and now work here.

Go to the Dome bar/restaurant on George St. The decorations and scents are amazing!
Echoing those who say that yep, Edinburgh is definitely not closed in December! Grin

Not sure why the hell anyone would ever want to Greenock ever but hey-ho. (I always get a battering for being anti-Glasgow on these threads!)

BlackJesus · 03/09/2017 18:31

you're the one being weirdly aggressive OP. And that was a bit of a stupid question to ask Hmm
