Just that really

I am wondering if anything is open as its not tourist time and not going in the week leading too, or after, Christmas .

Any Edinburgh MNs around to tell me there are things to do ?

TIA

The rant was hilarious. Called us cunts and said no wonder her ancestors relocated to LONDON.

Yes London was in caps.

LetDownFedUp · 03/09/2017 21:02

I can't believe I missed a stroppy rant. Has she withdrawn her offer of visiting Edinburgh now? No wonder this country is going to the dogs.

NikiBabe · 03/09/2017 21:03

Yes letdown she withdrew her plans to come to Edinburgh.

But im planning mine. The city may have to put up with me.

sparklefarts · 03/09/2017 21:07

Oh I've only just realised I've missed the rant. GuttedSad

NikiBabe · 03/09/2017 21:09

Genuine question though: please no laughing because most capital cities including London are dead to the world on Christmas day.

Is there anything to do on 25 December itself in Edinburgh? Is anything open at all or is it just a case or restaurant alone or walks by yourself?

ForeverLivingMyArse · 03/09/2017 21:09

The Zoo is open on Christmas day

Kublakhan · 03/09/2017 21:10

Greenock is on a stunning bit of coast line with incredible views and countryside. You're better in the car than the train but it's really not that bad. The people are nice and mercifully not in the slightest bit stuck up

squoosh · 03/09/2017 21:12

It is in a lovely position plus did you know that posh Tom Hiddleston's father is from Greenock?

NikiBabe · 03/09/2017 21:12

Ooh Zoo sounds fabulous. But will need to watch the hotel location as dont want to have to take a sodding cab at a massive mark up on Christmas day.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 03/09/2017 21:12

Aww, can't we have the rant back? I missed it too! Waving at fellow Edinbuggers.

It's not nearly as wet and dreich here as it is in Ireland or the west coast, lots of cold clear sunny days! (Having said that will jinx it now and we'll get rain all winter.) If you can't face the crowds in the Christmas market lots of the pubs do mulled wine/cider too, and it's great. You can go up to the castle without paying to get in to look at the view from the esplanade, well worth it and something you can't do during the festival.

morningtoncrescent62 · 03/09/2017 21:13

Grin Niki - well, a lot of things are closed, to be honest. However, if you fancy spending the day with the penguins and the pandas, the zoo will be open, and there'll be buses running so you can get there.

ForeverLivingMyArse · 03/09/2017 21:14

There are buses on Christmas day, just not as many as udua. The 26 to the zoo would still be fairly frequent.

squoosh · 03/09/2017 21:15

Having lived in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Ireland I can't say I've noticed any massive differences in climate. Ok the West of Ireland maybe. But Dublin, Edinburgh, and Glasgow - same weather as far as I can tell!

morningtoncrescent62 · 03/09/2017 21:16

Xpost. Buses 26 and 31 go from the city centre to the zoo and will have reasonable service on Christmas Day, as will the airport bus.

Leavingonajet · 03/09/2017 21:24

To be fair to OP I grew up with Greenock as the nearest place that had big shops and a hospital, relocating to LONDON under those circumstances does make sense to me. Sad I missed the rant and the capital letters though. 😛

MaryLennoxsScowl · 03/09/2017 21:25

I used to commute to Glasgow from Edinburgh and it was always raining when I got to work after having been dry in Edinburgh, so I might be biased. I like Glasgow too though, I'm not originally from Edinburgh so can say that without having my citizen badge taken away.

I think lots of people go to the Dome for Christmas dinner but you would definitely need to book weeks in advance and it's pricey. I do think a lot of places will close on the day though.

BuntyCollocks · 03/09/2017 21:26

Actual gutted I missed the rant. 😞😂

Kublakhan · 03/09/2017 21:28

Squoosh never mind him, I'm from Greenock and I'm mega posh Wink

BizzyFizzy · 03/09/2017 21:28

Edinburgh is great in December. As others have said, it's a capital city and does tourists year round. The weather is only as bad as yourclothing.

What can be quite shocking is the length of the day. It gets dark early in December. If this is a problem, balance it out by visiting in June when it never gets properly dark.

Willyoujustbequiet · 03/09/2017 21:38

The Dome!

nuff said.

mummy2oneandtwo · 03/09/2017 21:47

I've been to Edinburgh twice, both times in December and loved it. Was lucky with the weather both times as it was freezing cold but dry, so could enjoy sight seeing etc.

The castle terrace restaurant is lovely for a nice fancy meal but there are so many great places to find as you walk around, you won't be bored!

AmIthatbloodycold · 03/09/2017 21:48

Aw I missed the rant

Is she not coming now?

ShameGrin

indigox · 03/09/2017 21:53

As much as we Edinburghers are saying it's not that cold (because it isn't), I have a friend who visits from London regularly who does nothing but complain about how cold it is here Grin

snowball98 · 03/09/2017 21:57

There's loads to do in Edinburgh at Christmas, Christmas market, shows, ice skating, ferris wheel etc, and soo beautiful with all the Christmas lights. Its a great time of year to visit.

As for greenock, it would depend how long you are up for, if just a weekend then don't bother as you will need to travel to Glasgow (1 hour on the train) and then onwards, you would be better making another visit up to Glasgow at another time and visit greenock then if you wanted.

JemmyBloocher · 03/09/2017 21:58

I'm an Edinburgher, but living in the Highlands. I miss it terribly- like a physical pain. This thread makes me so homesick. I need to go and book a hotel room right now!
