Any Edinburgh MNs around to tell me there are things to do ?

It's Edinburgh not Helsinki. I am not sure what sort of searing winter temperatures London enjoys, but Edinburgh is really not that cold.

StoorieHoose · 05/09/2017 14:44

More likely to be dreich rather than cold

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuckKeidis · 05/09/2017 15:03

heron Edinburgh really is that cold compared to Glasgow, or it feels like it.

AtlanticWaves · 05/09/2017 16:17

Oooh thanks for the extra recommendations.

Maybe not the shopping mall then Grin

And maybe another night in York.

4 degrees is fairly nippy for us but I'm sure we'll cope.

Knottyash5 · 05/09/2017 16:27

I find Edinburgh very cold, presumably because it's on the North Sea.

I lived in York for a year and found that very cold too. Lovely city though.

Noofly · 05/09/2017 17:06

I don't find Edinburgh all that cold since they put the partial glass cover over the Waverley Steps. That wind tunnel used to be the coldest place on earth!

Great list Atlantic when it first opened some of dynamic earth was a bit scary for the younger ones. Might have changed but worth checking. The NCT used to do a great book called Edinburgh for Under Fives - would be worth getting your hands on a recent copy. If it's a lovely day - there are great play parks in the meadows and Inverleith park. Part of the trick with Edinburgh is just to bundle up warm. My DS had many a happy winters day on the beach in portobello - followed by hot chocolate in front of the fire at dal riada on the promonade. If you can manage the transport Craig Millar castle is a great castle - lots of turrets to explore!

Went last year the week before Christmas with my sister in law . Loved it plenty to do and I didn't find it too cold

Pangur2 · 05/09/2017 17:41

I know OP wasn't impressed but I know I am. Was looking at apartments on Rightmove last night, oooh! So pretty!

Circumlocutor · 05/09/2017 17:54

Flats! You were looking at flats.

LaurieMarlow · 05/09/2017 17:57

I've lived in London, Edinburgh, Dublin and the North of Ireland. I found Edinburgh considerably colder than anywhere else. However, it doesn't change the fact it's a fabulous city. Just wrap up warm.

Pangur2 · 05/09/2017 18:53

I was definitely looking at flats. I've been in London too long! What would me Ma think of me?
I fucking love Edinburgh though. I've only ever been during The Fringe though. AIBU?

(I went to see almost 40 comedy gigs in 9 days though, so at least I do it properly! And I love the art galleries...)

Pangur2 · 05/09/2017 18:54

Re the cold. I thought it was worth asking, but it doesn't sound any different to Dublin or much worse than London so I'm sure I'd be grand!

twattymctwatterson · 05/09/2017 20:52

This thread is hilarious. All kidding aside though, for people in other parts of the UK, (particularly outside of England) this attitude from some people who live in London and the SE isn't uncommon

MaryLennoxsScowl · 05/09/2017 22:18

Well, Edinburgh is the most northerly of all these places so that's not surprising! I meant it's not that cold compared to Aberdeen or similarly bitter climes. I wear a winter coat, woolly hat and scarf just like in the rest of the uk just have to get them out in July and survive fine. And the winter of 2010 was brilliant cos I got sent home from work even though I lived two blocks away!

NikiBabe · 05/09/2017 22:20

Did op ever come back

Stinkbomb · 05/09/2017 22:31

We went late Nov/early December one year, it was gorgeous- Christmas markets, beautiful lights, and got the bus out to that boat and watched an open air, aerial performance on 'twas the night before Christmas' followed by fireworks which was really nice (if incredibly cold!).
Great time of year to go though ime

HollaHolla · 05/09/2017 22:50

Ahhh winter of 2010/11 - I got stuck for 17 hours on the motorway. It wasn't actually snowing when I got on the bus to Glasgow. :(

If you're looking for castles, Dirleton, down in East Lothian is my favourite. You probably need a car (or the bus goes every hour - I think). It's for beautiful wild-ish gardens (where they even give you seeds to take home), and a proper drawbridge with lots of hides holes.

Yes 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 were bad, but they were the exception, not the rule.

They were the two worst Winters we've had in Edinburgh s since Mike and Bernie played the Usher Hall.

PrimalLass · 06/09/2017 11:13

My DP only missed that as he always left so early to drive from Fife to Glasgow. He was stuck in Glasgow all week though (and I was stuck in the house on my own with two small kids).

Noofly · 06/09/2017 12:10

We're in West Lothian and that winter was awful! There were no trains for days so one day DH tried to get the replacement bus instead. It started snowing again just when he got on the bus and after an hour and a half they'd only made it to Uphall from Livi North so he got off and walked back home. Our schools were off for over a week and then they went back just to be sent home again because the heating was broken!

DC now commute to Edinburgh for school and that winter is the making of nightmares for me in case we get a repeat in the next 7 years. Grin

That was a joke for the kids that one.

I am going in November twice for a conference! It's amazing experience even if it is a bit expensive
