I am wondering if anything is open as its not tourist time and not going in the week leading too, or after, Christmas .

Any Edinburgh MNs around to tell me there are things to do ?

Don't go to Greenock.

I've been. Once. Never again.

Ditto. Walk to wall bams.

Oh Lordy!

"Not sure why the hell anyone would ever want to Greenock ever but hey-ho. (I always get a battering for being anti-Glasgow on these threads!)"

I have no issues with Glasgow, it's a great city and I go there a few times a year, I'm still going Confused at the thought of people on holiday visiting Greenock, on purpose...

But I'm also pulling that face at Edinburgh being closed, rofl.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 03/09/2017 19:24

Well this took an abrupt turn.

Wanderingbluebell · 03/09/2017 19:25

We got engaged in Edinburgh in early December, many years ago :) It was a beautiful weekend, cold but sunny and crisp. I'd go back in a flash, lots of lovely places to eat and drink and wander.

ForeverLivingMyArse · 03/09/2017 19:25

You explained your reason for asking if anything would be open in a major city in December? I must have missed that.

Simmer doon ya radge.

Groovee · 03/09/2017 19:26

@wannabestressfree 12 weeks in advance for cheap tickets.

Wanderingbluebell · 03/09/2017 19:27

Um, hadn't RTFT and cross posted with some of the more negative sentiments. It's still a lovely city tho.

People are just trying to warn you about Greenock. Think arse end of Leicester without the sunshine. Edinburgh though is great. You'll have a wonderful time. Honestly even people from Greenock would say the same about Greenock (unless they've literally never left and have no internet...possible). Don't get worked up.

wannabestressfree · 03/09/2017 19:29

@Groovee thanks :)

pippitysqueakity

Are you serious?!

XiCi · 03/09/2017 19:32

Oh come on OP. If you're stupid enough to ask if a capital city will be open and have things to do in December then you deserve a bit of ribbing! I take it you are one of those people who think nothing happens outside London.

ForeverLivingMyArse · 03/09/2017 19:34

Boo mumsnet - that was an epic rant and it's a shame to delete it!

AgentCooper · 03/09/2017 19:34

I've been to Edinburgh many times between Christmas and New Year and it's lovely at that time. It's usually not horribly cold - you'll be fine with woollies and a decent jacket. And everything is open. I've always tended to avoid the Christmas market as it's too busy for my liking. Good sales shopping on Princes St though.

And I say this as a lifelong Glaswegian so you can trust me because I really should be shitting all over it Wink Agree that Greenock is not the prettiest but does that really matter if you're going to visit folk, not sightseeing? And yes, you would need to change trains in Glasgow but that's not difficult, if you're from London you'll be used to much bigger, more complicated stations.

MotherOfKittens · 03/09/2017 19:42

@wannabe train tickets are usually on sale about 12 weeks in advance, I think. So maybe check now!

Still laughing to myself here about the OP asking if Edinburgh would be closed GrinGrin

ChickenVindaloo2 · 03/09/2017 19:43

My main gripe with anything west of Corstorphine is the weegie accent! Makes everyone sound so stooopid! Grin

Awaits slagging for my Edinbugger accent...

PoppyPopcorn · 03/09/2017 19:44

Everything will be open! Castle, Palace, museums galleries are open year round.

TheScottishPlay · 03/09/2017 19:48

Enjoy. Everything will be open and remember there's no such thing as bad weather....only the wrong clothes.

flippinada · 03/09/2017 19:49

You should definitely come up to Edinburgh OP.

While you're here, make sure you take time to visit Wester Hailes. Get the number 30. Tip the driver a wink and tell him (or her) that you're looking forward to your free trip on the "Jaikey Express, Jocko". The driver will chuckle at this colourful banter and - with a cheery nod and a wink - will let you travel for free.

Once you arrive at your destination, do make sure to treat the locals to a colourful display of invective. Scotch folks have a great sense of humour and will appreciate your forthright commentary on their locale!

Groovee · 03/09/2017 19:50

I can do the number 30 Jamey Express with you. I have a plus one on my bus pass! 😂

flippinada · 03/09/2017 19:55

Oh, the rant was deleted. Shame.

Anyway, Edinburgh is definitely open. Ilt I wouldn't recommend a trip to Greenock unless you're going there to visit someone.

Willow2017 · 03/09/2017 19:59

Luluuuuu
Keep the heid! You asked if the capital city if of Scotland was 'open' in December what you expect people to say? "No, everyone decants to the castle and they pull up the drawbridge for winter?"

Of course Edinburgh is fabulous in December. The Xmas markets are great fun and the winter wonderland is great for kids.

Walk around the old town and see the fabulous architecture.
The lights on George street are awesome.
The museum is stuffed full of stuff and there is the new Egyptian tomb exhibit.
Do a bus tour.
Ghost tour.
Tons of restaraunts and bars.
The zoo has pandas ffs!

One quick Google would have told you all the things on during Nov- Jan
