WIBU to have one small beer at 5 weeks pregnant?

It's a lovely wedding celebration outside on a hot day. How much harm could it do?

I'm on the fence and you can talk me out of it if it's really a bad idea!

Totally up to you, but I would make sure you drink lots of water too

silkybear · 26/08/2017 16:38

I wouldnt at this stage to be honest but up to you

MumsOnCrack · 26/08/2017 16:39

I had a couple when pregnant and was fine. Maybe a shandy if you're worried?

OrphanAccount · 26/08/2017 16:40

I wouldn't. It would almost certainly be fine and I'm sure you'll have loads of posters telling you that they didn't find out they were pregnant until later and went binge drinking with no ill effects. However you do know and there is a chance - albeit a small one- that you could harm your baby. Why would you?

RainyDayBear · 26/08/2017 16:40

I wouldn't personally, the first trimester is when all the key development happens. After that I'm a bit more relaxed about the odd drink.

Alcohol free beer instead maybe?

Kintan · 26/08/2017 16:42

I wouldn't - there must be other cold drinks on offer? Maybe in the third trimester, but the first is the most vulnerable.

NanooCov · 26/08/2017 16:42

Ask the bar if they have alcohol free. I've been having the odd Heineken 0% and it's really nice.

Zvandelle · 26/08/2017 16:43

You're fine. The French do it all the time. Better birth results than us. With some food in your stomach and a couple of glasses of water, just on a special occasion, no problem.

ImperialBlether · 26/08/2017 16:43

I wouldn't. You've got to get used to not having a drink for the next year or so, sorry!

PotteringAlong · 26/08/2017 16:43

No. Its simply not worth it.

NicolasFlamel · 26/08/2017 16:43

Entirely up to you.
No one can tell you for definite what it could do. I wouldn't want the worry on my mind though. Not worth it for a beer.
You'll get people saying absolutely not or yes it's totally fine and ultimately it's still up to you.

starkid · 26/08/2017 16:44

Surely you can control yourself and go without?

Cheerybigbottom · 26/08/2017 16:44

I wouldn't, it's not worth it. Have some alcohol free fizz.

PinkHeart5911 · 26/08/2017 16:45

I wouldn't

Mushroomburger17 · 26/08/2017 16:45

I know I wouldn't have. I did in the third trimesters when they're developed and basically just growing. Becks blue is great.

scottishdiem · 26/08/2017 16:45

I have no advice to give so cant help with the fence position. But, why do you want a beer anyway? Plenty of non-alcholic drinks taste nice as well. Surely part of the attraction of a beer is the physical effect of even one. And if that is really what you are after whilst pregnant I wouldnt even start on that particular road to be honest.

Eryri1981 · 26/08/2017 16:46

I didn't drink for 5 months as had started TTC, then went to a wedding thinking nothing was happening, so what the heck and had a couple (2 pimms & lemonade plus a bit of champagne for toasts). Turns out I was 3 weeks pregnant at the time.

Since then I have felt irrational pissed off at myself and guilty about it, even though it is not even enough alcohol to warrant the midwife writing anything other than No alcohol consumed in my notes.

So personally I just don't think it's worth the stress of giving yourself something to worry/ feel guilty about, there will be plenty of other things to worry about anyway.

GahBuggerit · 26/08/2017 16:47

I was told by 2 mw and a consultant that the odd small drink is absolutely fine. Have a shandy if you're concerned but I would and have had the odd drink while pg and didn't think twice about it.

stevie69 · 26/08/2017 16:47

No you wouldn't be unreasonable. I would, if I felt like it Blush

JigglyTuff · 26/08/2017 16:47

Of course! Enjoy it :)

The British rules on not drinking are because the government think women are thick, they're not based on any actual science

AnnieAnoniMouse · 26/08/2017 16:48

I wouldn't.

I very, very, much doubt one small glass would actually do any harm, however, I couldn't live with myself if it did, so I wouldn't take the risk.

I love sparkling water really, really cold. It's almost as good (& no sugar!)

Viviennemary · 26/08/2017 16:48

It would be better if you didn't. Have a nice cold drink of something without alcohol.

Merida83 · 26/08/2017 16:48

I definitely wouldn't. I stopped all alcohol while ttc and won't touch a drop till after dd is born. Not worth the risk imo.

Plus if it's lovely and warm you're better off with something that will actually hydrate you.

Crunchymum · 26/08/2017 16:51

Have a really weak lager shandy?

That's my drink tonight (17w) if I really fancy alcohol.

BlackberryQ · 26/08/2017 16:51

Thanks for all the opinions. I was so good at being pregnant the first time round and wouldn't touch a drop or eat shellfish etc. I've already had prawns and rare steak since finding out Blush. I'm very slowly sipping a lager I was just meant to be carrying (to put people off the scent).
