It's a lovely wedding celebration outside on a hot day. How much harm could it do?

I'm on the fence and you can talk me out of it if it's really a bad idea!

@sparechage, I'm accepting fact. Again, look at that fetus' reaction to LOW LEVEL alcohol during pregnancy. That is fact.

Pollypudding · 26/08/2017 18:46

Personally I would not risk any alcohol knowing I was pregnant but your choice.

Caffeine causes a reaction in a fetus but women aren't good to stay away completely from tea/coffee/fizzy drinks...........are they?!

The codamol I took would have caused some reaction also surely?

It's about level of risk. One small beer - low to non existent actual risk. Getting tanked while knowingly Pg? Higher risk.

aveenofreak · 26/08/2017 19:00

Go for it, it's one small beer as a one off at a celebration... no big deal

mogulfield · 26/08/2017 19:05

I drank a little in my last pregnancy (1 glass of wine once a week), then I read this article and now I am scared to in this pregnancy!
www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2966120/New-warning-booze-pregnancy-Half-glass-wine-stop-babies-breathing.html

Baby stops breathing after half a glass of wine? Confused I have no idea about the validity of this study. 1, they don't mention a sample size and 2, how did he know the foetus stopped breathing? He said there were movement changes but that doesn't indicate a problem. Wish I'd never read it!!

Very good point people! They don't breathe do they? These are the words of a professor at an actual university (Queens, Belfast) apparently.
The movement thing is no indication of a problem, baby's turn all the time.

I have a friend who got bladdered at a party when she was a fortnight pregnant and didn't know. Her DD is fine.

Neuromutant · 26/08/2017 19:29

Former Developmental Neurobiologist here - DRINK THE BEER IF YOU WANT TO!
At five weeks there is no placenta, no umbilical cord, no shared blood supply. A small beer is fine.
Happy to back up with references if required Smile

pizzapine · 26/08/2017 19:35

At this stage, I doubt it would make any difference. I had a midwife once tell me that alcohol doesn't pass to the child till around 9-10 weeks! Some kind of defence mechanism from the body. The authenticity, I don't know. Although a lot of people do not even know they are pregnant at this early stage. So, unless you are going to get absolutely paralytic (although some people do, without realising they are expecting) I think you will be absolutely fine

VelvetSpoon · 26/08/2017 19:37

Someone needs to do something about the stench of burning martyr on this thread.

Can't you just have something nonalcoholic?
Do you have a problem with alcohol?
Yours going to have to get used to not drinking

Jesus, the sanctimony!

Have a drink, there's more risk in getting in a car, and we do that daily.

pigeondujour · 26/08/2017 19:40

She does have a problem with alcohol.

pizzapine · 26/08/2017 19:40

@velvet she is 5 weeks, she might still be getting used to the idea of being pregnant. Regardless, a beer at this stage, when most people do not even know they are pregnant, will very unlikely do no harm. Get off your high horse

pizzapine · 26/08/2017 19:42

@pigeondujour is there previous evidence of this?

pizzapine · 26/08/2017 19:43

Sorry @VelvetSpoon read ur comment wrong. Agree completely x

pigeondujour · 26/08/2017 19:45

Lots, unfortunately.

StickThatInYourPipe · 26/08/2017 19:45

I'd rather have a j2o lol

DermotOLogical · 26/08/2017 19:49

Yes reborn, shit advice.

Every HCP I've ever seen has assured me that a small drink occasionally is not a problem. No matter what stage of pregnancy.

Tbh at 5 weeks you are lucky to even know. Most people don't know at that point and get properly bladdered. 😂

RebornSlippy · 26/08/2017 19:49

@Neuromutant, my understanding is that there is an effect on placental development, rather than fetal development in the first trimester. Obvsiously reduced placental fucntion can have adverse effects on the fetus in later pregnancy.

iamyourequal · 26/08/2017 19:50

Are you really that desperate for a drink? Do you have issues with alcohol? You've known you're pregnant for less than three weeks- surely you can go for longer than that? whoever posted this needs to get a grip!
Of course you can have a small beer. A qualified scientist working in the medical field has confirmed this upthread. There is no evidence out there whatsoever that having a small drink during pregnancy does any harm to the baby whatsoever. Enjoy the wedding!

RebornSlippy · 26/08/2017 19:51

Hmm, seems there are bigger issues behind this post.

DermotOLogical · 26/08/2017 19:52

Reborn how the fuck did babies even survive in the old days when the majority of liquid people drank was alcoholic (albeit a low percentage).

You are trotting out bollocks and (quite rightly) having your arse handed to you on a plate by people who actually know what they are talking about.

Stop being such a judgemental dick, one unit of alcohol does no harm whatsoever. I feel sorry that you think it does, you have been wrongly advised.
