hiya,

just looking for views really. is this the new modern parenting? dd2 is expecting a dd herself and has said she would only like gender neutral gifts, i was a bit upset because i think there are some lovely girls clothes, i said will she never put her in dresses, she says no. im a bit surprised really, but yet she is happy to have her hair long, etc.??

just curious if this is the norm now? i have never really heard of it before, dd1 has 3 dc different genders and never had an issue buying them boys and girls items.

im not judging, but think its slightling strange? aibu?

  • the material is usually less comfy, as it's rare to find jersey / soft cotton, instead getting the cotton or polyester for shirts.
  • if you are not wearing tights, the child won't slide fast on a slide, or will braze their legs more easily, or will feel the heat more of the slide / sling is a metal one and has been on the sun, or will get more dirty if sitting on the grass, etc. That means girls might end up being less active because the dress is less convenient / makes them more aware of uncomfortable surfaces on their skin

and will confuse well meaning old ladies who want to coo over your boy/ girl!

DD wore a pink snowsuit and got called a boy - DS wore a blue coat and got called a girl

Not overly concerned what random elderly people assume is between my child's legs

I wouldn't worry about confusing random strangers. My boys have all been mistaken for girls on occasion even when wearing very stereotypically boy clothing.

I even had one of them continuing to be mistaken for a girl after the well meaning old lady asked what my little girl (dressed in a blue mini suit at the time) was called. DC has a traditional boys name. Instead of "oops, your child is a boy!" we had Confused "that's an unusual name for a girl!" 🤦‍♀️

Those who've watched the new BBC programme on this issue, is it suitable for children as well? DD is 10 (a very young 10) but is really interested in the subject
