Long term lurker here, really concerned by the actions of 45 though.

Think Harry Leslie Smith was both lucky and unusual if he didn't see war coming in 1939. Talking to many people of my parents' generation (born early 1920s to early 1930s) it was completely obvious it was coming.

They were more prescient than most, then.

For many people of the time, memories of the Great War were all too real. I don't think they could conceive of another one.
