We've been on the waiting list for a beach for for ages.

A new set are being built and we've been successful in securing a great one.

We were going to buy but I've had to put a hold on it for the following reasons-

I was trying to -using the square footage/floor plans - plan where storage stuff and table/mini kitchen would go etc and asked DH for his help

He's basically dismissed everything and told me that his kayack is going in and that everything else will have to fit around it.

His kayak will only fit it its diagonal and he's refusing to have is hing from the ceiling (which means everyone will have to bend anyway to avoid concussion - there's no permission granted for lockable storage under either.

I asked him is he'd also maintain /paint do essential repairs as he does nothing at home-answer- no im happy just to have somewhere for a kettle and a kayack. No consideration for anyone else or anyone else's enjoyment of it.

I've told him I'm withdrawing from it then- which he's having a huge strop.

I already do every shred of maintencance/work/upkeep on our home he helps with nothing- he has a home office which looks like he's Mr Trebus's protégée ND can just see myself wishing I'd not bothered.

Am I being unreasonable to withdraw (and think £18k for a kayack storage facility because DH is too fucking lazy to take his out of the shed and onto the car) and look elsewhere for myself and he kids?

** precious

kittybiscuits · 15/08/2017 14:06

A trolley on wheels? If you have electricity in your hut, just jigsaw the damn thing in half and stick both ends in the sand. Selfish pig!

Chatoyant · 15/08/2017 14:07

Parklives thats a great idea!
He sounds like a massive twat OP. I'd inform him that if he did leave the kayak right in the middle then you'd ask someone for help to get it out and then leave it outside to be stolen.

coriliavijvaad · 15/08/2017 14:09

What a cock.
£18k of family money on kayak storage is ridiculous.

I like the share it with a friend option.

allertse · 15/08/2017 14:15

As a more workable solution than hanging it from the ceiling, could you rig something up so that instead of going diagonally along the ceiling, its hung diagonally across a wall? So one end is in the bottom back right corner, for example, and the other end is in the top front right corner? You'd lose a bit of space but much less, and it would probably be easier to get in/out than hanging from the ceiling.

LakieLady · 15/08/2017 14:15

Explain to him that thefts from beach huts are quite commonplace, and ask if he really thinks it's a good idea to store something as precious as his kayak in it? Then, when he insists it'll be fine, ensure it gets stolen one night.

FWIW, I find the notion of a grown man keeping a kayak for the sole purpose of instagramming selfies utterly hilarious. He sounds very childish imo.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 15/08/2017 14:19

What a twat he is.

BertrandRussell · 15/08/2017 14:22

If he wasn't being an arsehole, then surely the solution is to store the kayak in the beach hut when it's not being used, and just take it out and put it on the beach when you get there- and put it back when you leave. Or am I missing something?

Ceto · 15/08/2017 14:24

H's off on one this morning reminding me every 10 minutes how it's been my dream for years and that I'm depriving the DC

Easily dealt with, surely? Yes, a beach hut that I can use properly as a beach hut has been my dream for years. I have never dreamt about buying an incredibly expensive kayak storage shed. Likewise the DC have no wish or need for kayak storage facilities so I am not depriving them of anything.

But I'd be seriously tempted to solve the problem by selling the kayak. The reality is, after all, is that it's not a kayak, it's a ludicrously expensive photo prop.

daimbar · 15/08/2017 14:25

Look into renting a 2nd beach hut for DH and his kayak (he pays). We've just bought a beach hut for £18k but prior to that rented one for £300 per year. It's not strictly allowed but lots of people do it. You can flyer the huts or go on websites like 'nextdoor'

thatdearoctopus · 15/08/2017 14:25

Surely the whole point of a beach hut is to have a mini-kitchen in there, and a counter to prepare picnics, and some deckchairs/buckets & spades etc... And then you jolly the whole thing up with fresh seaside-y paint, bunting and some nautical nick-knacks with maybe a few cushions with sailing boats on them and you're away.

How the hell is a fucking great big kayak going to fit in with that?

kittybiscuits · 15/08/2017 14:25

It can only fit in there diagonally, which precludes the other options. Plus I wouldn't ram a kayak diagonally into a beautiful new beach hut.

Ceto · 15/08/2017 14:26

Bertrand, OP can't move the kayak, even with the children's help. Presumably she can't guarantee that her partner will be available or willing to do it every time she wants to go to the hut. Plus having a dirty great kayak in there is going to make it ever so slightly difficult to set it up as a decent, comfortable usable beach hut.

thatdearoctopus · 15/08/2017 14:27

Bertrand, It's too heavy for her to lift on her own or even with the kids' help.

blankface · 15/08/2017 14:28

Start collecting pictures of the interiors of existing beach huts, show the clueless crock exactly what they are inside, i.e. they are not storage sheds.

Blossomdeary · 15/08/2017 14:31

Silly man. Just do your own thing and refuse to house the kayak.

Personally I would accidentally trip up and poke a hole in the darned thing; or drive the car into it - the possibilities are endless.

Is it your money that is being spent on the beach hut? If so, lay down rules?

BertrandRussell · 15/08/2017 14:31

Blimey- what sort of a kayak is it??

But, as I said, it's irrelevant because he is being an arse about it.

OP. Buy it. Don't give him a key.

YellowLawn · 15/08/2017 14:32

buy it secretly and don't tell your h

BoffinMum · 15/08/2017 14:38

I would ignore him and just proceed with something that suits the majority of people in the family, not just one kidult.

Ceto · 15/08/2017 14:41

Blimey- what sort of a kayak is it??

In OP's graphic words, it's a big fuck-off fibre glass one.

nigelsbigface · 15/08/2017 14:43

Could you research other options for storing his bloody kayak? They might be quite cheap. Sort that out for him as a compromise but stand firm on your beach hut. Honestly you would never forgive him if you ended up not getting it or getting it and not being able to use it because of his fucking canoe.

LakieLady · 15/08/2017 14:45

That's a good idea, Blankface. Then he'll realise that the kayak will inevitably get damaged when OP nails up the bunting.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 15/08/2017 14:46

Kayaks are bloody enormous.
Maybe he should sell it and buy a small adult kayak and a child's kayak.
They would fit in among the hut furniture

eddielizzard · 15/08/2017 14:54

he's being selfish. i'd still get the beach hut though. work out the details later
