To want summer to be over?

StewPots · 14/08/2017 10:57

Yes, I know I'm BU but I swear I have reverse SAD.

I hate the heat and humidity of the summer - it's either a scorching heatwave where you just sweat uncomfortably wherever you are, or it's pissing down but still hot so you get wet because putting a coat on is not an option.

I hate the lighter mornings because my insomnia gets even worse and I have a lot less sleep meaning I'm generally ratty for 3-4 months.

I hate the volume of people everywhere, the fact that you can't get into places, or onto beaches, and that the traffic increases a million fold so it takes forever to get from A to B. This works in cities with the infrastructure to cope, I do love being in a city and do just fine with the crowds in one, but in a small coastal town? Not so much. I appreciate tourists provide jobs (my own not so long ago) but when you just want to nip to the shop for bread and milk and it takes forever, it starts to drive me potty.

I hate the fact that there's bloody wasps everywhere and the fact that they stung DS on the mouth yesterday so he had to walk round with a cold pack on his lips and looked like he'd done 5 rounds of boxing.

I hate that I feel guilty for not being permanently cheerful because the suns out and have to hide my real feelings about it, which are basically "I hate this relentless sunshine, I want to curl up in the dark in a cold room and not have to go anywhere or see anything that's bright, sunny and lovely".

Yeah I know, I'm a grumpy ungrateful cow and I appreciate there are many (the majority) that enjoy the summer and all it brings, but I'm feeling really fed up and down about the summer like I do every year - I actively dread it in fact - and I can't wait for October/November when I feel happier, get more sleep, eat healthier and can listen to the sounds and smell the aromas that Autumn and winter bring... I can't be the only one, surely?

Toffee yep. Christmas Day a few years ago, my PIL had central heating on and I had to go out in the garden in minus temps in shorts an t shirt pjs so I could cool down...I've been saying all day that I'm very strange! There's nothing medically wrong with me so I'm not sure why I get hot so fast!

That was in Northumberland too so it was bloody freezing out but I loved it, sat on a chair outside with a mug of tea on Christmas morning :)

Well I suppose if you get that bad from central heating then you have every right to dislike summer Grin doesn't sound much fun.

StewPots · 14/08/2017 20:17

Toffee I have no idea why I can't tolerate temps over 15! Not a clue Confused

Hi OP I have suffered from the summer version of SAD for the past 25 years. I feel horrible from around late May to September. Depressed, anxious, poor sleeping and can't see the point in anything. It is a shame as I do like the summers just feel crap whilst it's going on. Read somewhere it's to do with Melatonin production, some people are over sensitive to too much light etc. That may be a load of old cobblers but you are not alone. Roll on Autumn Flowers

StewPots · 14/08/2017 22:05

Cowardly thank you and Flowersto you. It's not just the heat (and I've conceded that this year hasn't been as hot as previous ones, but seems hot to me personally) and yes about the light...it really does get me down and it seems to go on forever...but I do appreciate that I am in a minority and feel bad for those who love summer and haven't really had one this year.

Cowardly Myself and many members of the family suffer from migraines which get worse during the summer months, particularly when it's humid, so I spend most days taking paracetamol as soon as I get up to try and stem it and having sunglasses on at all times when outdoors. Honestly I feel like some sort of bat or vampire!

YANBU. It is a nice time of year this last third. Smile

Howeverrrr.

I do like the summer; the long balmy days, getting a tan, beach days, evenings in the garden supping wine, afternoons sitting in the park or garden reading a book, long walks in the countryside and woodlands, fruit picking, healthier eating, getting nice and hot, and having lower bills.

But around late July-early August, I find myself looking forward to the months ending in 'ber.' I look forward to the Autumn/winter stock in the shops, my Christmas catalogue coming, the cooler days, the nights drawing in, Halloween, several close family birthdays, the lovely colours of nature, our annual holiday in late September, cosy nights by the fire, and thanksgiving (part of our family is American,) and also Christmas.

Then by mid January, I can't wait for the Spring. I HATE January, and February ain't much cop. I wish I could bounce from December to March! I like the nights drawing in now, but HATE it when it's dark at 4pm. Getting dark at about 8pm is fine with me, and then light at 6am.

So yeah, oddly, by mid to late summer, I am looking forward to Autumn and winter, but by January, I am looking forward to Spring and summer! (And I do enjoy each part of the year for a few months before I start to crave the next bit!)

Cowardlycustard2 · 14/08/2017 22:56

That's funny you should say that as my headaches get a lot worse during summer as well. I find taking St Johns Wort tablets seems to help my mood swings and anxiety however one side effect of that is photosensitivity so during the summers when eveyone else is out in their nice clothes I will be found living in sunglasses and long sleeved body encompassing garments. I suppose it at least saves the general public from the sight of my super knobbly knees Grin

Stillwishihadabs · 14/08/2017 23:35

Well maybe 15 is warm to you. To me it's freezing, I am only really comfortable above 23 and 27/28 is ideal, a bit hotter if I don't have to work. I am a Londoner though and it's rare the Mercury falls below 20 may-sept. :)

PoppyTree · 14/08/2017 23:45

15 isn't warm to me, but it's OK, like bearable. It's fairly tepid. If I went out for a walk, I would be fine without a coat but would need a cardy! Cool is say, 9 to 13-ish. Below 9 is obviously cold.

I would class 19 to 25 as warm, 25 to 29 as very warm, 30 plus as hot. (35 plus as very hot.)

I can stand 32 degrees and hot, much better than I can stand 22 degrees and humid IYSWIM. I hate the humidity.

pongoismyhero · 15/08/2017 07:03

15 is nice for me. I can cope up til about 23/24, then it gets a bit too hot for me unless by the sea.

I love a proper cold winter, we've not had one in London since 2012. Last year on Halloween it was 17c!!!!

LoniceraJaponica · 15/08/2017 07:22

My ideal temperature is about 23/24. It is warm enough to not have to take a cardigan/jumper around with me or wear socks, but not too warm to do anything.

15 degrees is jumper and thin jacket weather to me.

absolutelyincredible · 17/08/2017 10:14

I am also fascinated by this mysterious microclimate in the West Country where it has been 30 degrees for ages and yet no-one else seems to have noticed Hmm.

OP and all those who think anything above 15 degrees, you must realise (and actually the OP has admitted many times) that that is not normal thinking and for most of the population it is merely warm even at 20 degrees? Proper hot arriving in the late 20's early 30's? I think that would be considered the general consensus. 15 is cool for the summer even in Britian, they would laugh their heads off at us in the Southern Med.

It is around 19 degrees today and it is pleasant but I am in jeans, socks and trainers and sure as heck not hot!

I am baffled at the thought of cool baths and hot fans, that sounds like menopausal territory.

LoniceraJaponica · 17/08/2017 10:16

We have a forecast of 21 degrees today - yay!

selectedpicnicitems · 17/08/2017 19:30

It reached the dizzy heights of 25 degrees today and I did think of all the summer haterz on this thread Grin!!

LoniceraJaponica · 17/08/2017 20:12

We ended up with a glorious sunny 22 degrees, and it was bliss.

Buglife · 17/08/2017 20:33

I feel ready for autumn now, DS starts pre school, I've left my job and will start volunteering, got House and garden work planned, and I love the whole scarf boot coat thing! And we are huge Christmas people, and I am excited to do Halloween and bonfire night with DS old enough to enjoy. I'm sick of my summer clothes and I'm pale and burn easily and I'm allergic to mozzie bites. But saying that by February I'm gagging for some warmth and sun. I like summer up to about early July and winter until mid Jan (I like the whole resoluation making plans part of Jan!)

LoniceraJaponica · 17/08/2017 20:48

"and I love the whole scarf boot coat thing!"

Why?

I have loved being able to wear a summer dress and sandals today - being able to have limbs free of constriction. Obviously I wear coat, scarf and boots when it is cold, but I feel far more comfortable in lighter, looser clothes.

DD is a teenager so Halloween and Christmas are a bit meh.

Delatron · 17/08/2017 21:36

I'm happiest in shirts, vest, flip flops. I can't even bear socks...

Delatron · 17/08/2017 21:37

Shorts! Bloody autocorrect

Buglife · 17/08/2017 21:50

I like wool a lot 😂 I prefer the look of boots and coats. Tights, boots, a dress, topped with a nice coat and a scarf is a look I am happiest in. I'm from Northumberland anyway so my life was about wearing warm clothes until I moved down south, hottest summer temps were usually around 19-20 degrees. Winter was COLD.

LivingInMidnight · 17/08/2017 21:54

I got excited this morning because I realised it was a bit dark when my alarm went off.

I'm photosensitive and crap at sleeping so sunny mornings aren't great for me. I actually like going to work in the dark. I realise that's not everyone's outlook, but since I'm not controlling the earth's motion I'm not sure why anyone would question it.

LoniceraJaponica · 17/08/2017 22:17

I have poor eyesight, so driving in the dark isn't great. I much prefer to have good visibility.

randomer · 17/08/2017 22:25

excited about Halloween please can someone explain this
