To want summer to be over?

StewPots · 14/08/2017 10:57

Yes, I know I'm BU but I swear I have reverse SAD.

I hate the heat and humidity of the summer - it's either a scorching heatwave where you just sweat uncomfortably wherever you are, or it's pissing down but still hot so you get wet because putting a coat on is not an option.

I hate the lighter mornings because my insomnia gets even worse and I have a lot less sleep meaning I'm generally ratty for 3-4 months.

I hate the volume of people everywhere, the fact that you can't get into places, or onto beaches, and that the traffic increases a million fold so it takes forever to get from A to B. This works in cities with the infrastructure to cope, I do love being in a city and do just fine with the crowds in one, but in a small coastal town? Not so much. I appreciate tourists provide jobs (my own not so long ago) but when you just want to nip to the shop for bread and milk and it takes forever, it starts to drive me potty.

I hate the fact that there's bloody wasps everywhere and the fact that they stung DS on the mouth yesterday so he had to walk round with a cold pack on his lips and looked like he'd done 5 rounds of boxing.

I hate that I feel guilty for not being permanently cheerful because the suns out and have to hide my real feelings about it, which are basically "I hate this relentless sunshine, I want to curl up in the dark in a cold room and not have to go anywhere or see anything that's bright, sunny and lovely".

Yeah I know, I'm a grumpy ungrateful cow and I appreciate there are many (the majority) that enjoy the summer and all it brings, but I'm feeling really fed up and down about the summer like I do every year - I actively dread it in fact - and I can't wait for October/November when I feel happier, get more sleep, eat healthier and can listen to the sounds and smell the aromas that Autumn and winter bring... I can't be the only one, surely?

Lonicera I know I'm completely U in it all, and that I sound like an entitled arse but it's just my personal preference for reasons I can't explain.

I've tried linen cropped trousers this year and they've been great in the really hot days.

I consider anything over 18 hot which I know is ridiculous as it's cold or cooler to most but it's the point I start getting uncomfortable, I've no idea why, I get hot and sweat a lot very quickly. Normal weight for my height (prob lose a couple of pounds to look more svelte though), nothing medically wrong except what I just mentioned, healthy and generally a happy, sociable person. So I don't know why I get so uncomfortable so quickly.

For the record I can't stand constant central heating/ fires on either due to overheating quickly. My house has just basic storage heaters, which no one really bothers with, and none of us are ever poorly in winter, we escape all the nasty viruses. However, so far this summer, there's been a dose of Noro, both kids have had very nasty throats infections requiring antibiotics, DS has developed hay fever, DDs asthma has worsened so now has a different inhaler for summer months and I e had an increase in migraines - just before anyone says "oooh you will catch your death in winter".

I'm not romanticising winter - I know for the majority it sucks, but summer does for me, different horses for courses or whatever the saying is.

I don't thing anyone has said summer is the best thing ever, since we're all adults not pre-teens. People have said they prefer warmth to grey, cold and miserable, which seems a respasonabke view to hold, and I think a few have suggested people have a romanticised view of Autumn which isn't usually crisp, cold an sunny at all.
Obviously different people like different things, but since all British seasons last about 3 months, everyone gets a go.

SD60659 · 14/08/2017 13:56

PNGirl - bloody good post

Cardi

Yeah I thought you were in that area going by your name (just a guess of course)

I'm in Coastal Pembs, probably not more than half an hour from you.

Thermometers and weather stations are set up correctly with sensors in the shade. I also have the run of the mill in car temp guages (on several vehicles)

My readings are definitely not inaccurate. Maybe you just tolerate the heat better than me, that's entirely possible, so you don't notice it as much? I work outdoors and I'm not being a bitch when I say the hot weather makes it incredibly difficult. Shit, when I put the stabilisers down on my machine earlier in the year the tarmac literally melted and the machine (well, it's stabilisers) actually SANK. I shit you not. And that's happened in previous years too.

JacquesHammer · 14/08/2017 13:56

And where is this mythical part of the UK where autumn is full of sunny, crisp days and winter is never dank and gloomy? Or do people fantasise about the odd one or two days that we get like this

I love the dank and gloomy. Especially over the industrial north landscape. Makes me happy

StewPots · 14/08/2017 14:00

Cardi Agree with that, obviously we have different opinions and I am always respectful of the fact that most people enjoy the summer months and I'm just a strange weirdo.

However, it's also possible that people have a romanticised view of summer too - BBQs everyday, going on the beach or in the park, loads of great events etc.
In reality, the beaches are packed, BBQ food sells out immediately at the first hint of a hot day, parks are packed as are local lidos and pools, the constant queues and crowds of people are relentless, and doing anything remotely decent or exciting like a festival costs a fortune to do. Also, summer holidays are long and get boring for both kids and adults after the first 2 weeks then it's a nightmare to fill up the schedule. And yes the rain stops play especially here in the U.K a lot.

So there's rose tinted glasses on both sides of the fence sometimes.

You hate the heat but want Autumn to come so you can wrap up in warm clothes and cook hearty hot meals?

WTAF

Go and live in Siberia then.

StewPots · 14/08/2017 14:05

Niki by warm clothes I mean a pair of jeans, boots and a cardigan not twenty layers of goosedown coats, tights with socks and hats etc. I get hot too quickly so personally a load of layers isn't ideal either.

And please don't be rude. I haven't been rude to anyone expressing their love of the summer - I'm aware I'm in a minority with this.

As for Siberia, yes I wouldn't mind visiting as it's a vast and interesting country with many different cultures and wildlife, it's not all a frozen wasteland.

YADNBU. I live on the continent where we often get temps above 30° in summer. This year has been particularly bad. The first sunny days are lovely, though, there's always this feeling of optimism in the air. But I'm personally really not built for it. Skin goes red, even with factor 50. The sweat makes the hair around my face curl and stick up and it looks awful. The mosquitos love me, I've been bitten dozens of times so far but at least this year they haven't woken me up at night...

BillBrysonsBeard · 14/08/2017 15:24

We are all different OP! I love all seasons but especially Autumn and Winter.. Though I have really enjoyed this summer as it has been lots of sunny, dry but cool days (West Yorkshire) I think it's been my favourite summer! I hate the heat and humidity when it happens. I love dark and gloomy.
There's nothing wrong with your preference at all, you can't help how you feel! You haven't got long to wait OP.

ladystarkers · 14/08/2017 15:25

I prefer Autumn to summer.

StewPots · 14/08/2017 15:33

Bill Thank you. I know, it's just I feel bad because everyone looks forward to summer ( and I do appreciate that this year's hasn't been great for summer fans, not compared with even last year) and then it'll soon be winter where people hate the cold and wind...I feel bad. As silly as that sounds.

OP have you read the AIBU to be excited it's nearly autumn thread?!

You will be AMAZED by the amount of people who share your view, I'm on page 7 at the moment! Just came across it by coincidence!

StewPots · 14/08/2017 15:44

SD I was just reading some of that! Yes I'm clearly not alone :) may post over there later on!

People liking rain, cold, grey skies, dank gloominess... I just don't get it. What's so appealing??

It makes the countryside around here look incredible. I love the feel of a really cold day once I've been inside. I like seeing my breath as I walk.

I love coming in and getting warm. I love the juxtaposition of a cosy inside against a stark outside.

I love the sound of heavy rain. I love the smell of heavy rain. I like putting on a rain coat and walking in it.

SD60659 · 14/08/2017 15:57

OP - I'll join ya!

toffee1000

For me it's a long and probably boring story. It just depends on your lifestyle and what you enjoy doing I guess. For me, I'm in the timber industry, I love the smell of 2 stroke in the mornings and everything surrounding it. We can't cut timber (there are exceptions) during the summer months, it all starts in Autumn. Plus everything I moaned about (summer) before. Nothing argumentative intended here but while you don't get the appeal of autumn/winter - I don't get the appeal of spring/summer. It just doesn't suit me, I don't enjoy it.

Summer for me is a 6 month long sweating, misery making endurance test. Whilst I do tan well, it makes my work incredibly laborious and I just don't like being hot all the time. Do you know what I mean?

Sallystyle · 14/08/2017 16:08

You're not a minority OP.

I have never known so many people to hate summer until I came to MN. Even when we have had a shit summer some still hate it.

20C is not very warm (to the poster who said it was) it is pleasant but that is not very warm.

I understand people hating it when it's really hot, like 30c because most houses here aren't built for that kind of heat and it is uncomfortable but those temps are very rare.

A surprising amount of I hate summer threads have popped up considering we only had 2-3 weeks of hot weather in most areas.

People like what they like, you get your perfect dark grey and cold weather for what 9 months of the year? Summer lovers have had it for about 3 weeks this year. You're lucky you only have to put up with weather you hate for such a short time. As a winter hater who feels the cold terribly which often makes me feel ill I unreasonably want to tell summer moaners just to be grateful that they don't have to put up with it for long because having weather you can stand for most of the year is truly shit.

toffee1000 · 14/08/2017 16:10

Summer, six months??? GrinGrinGrin where do you live that summer lasts that long and is hot enough to make you sweaty?
Personally I don't like being cold and damp but each to their own I guess.

LoniceraJaponica · 14/08/2017 16:13

Where I live the countryside is at its prettiest right now. The moors are purple with heather, my garden is the best its ever been and everywhere is still lovely snd green. In winter evetything is dead looking and miserable.

fussychica · 14/08/2017 16:20

Well I live in Wiltshire and the weather has been unrelentingly rubbish since the end of June. I think we've had 2 or 3 days since then that I would class as summer. Yesterday was pleasant but like an early Autumn day, today it's mild but completely cloudy with ocassional drizzle. Not my idea of summer.

Weatherwise, can't wait for September when I'm off to Spain!

Oysterbabe · 14/08/2017 16:21

Yanbu. I'm pregnant though and hot all the time even when it isn't hot. I want it to be winter and for my baby to arrive.

SD60659 · 14/08/2017 16:24

toffee

You are hereby invited to spend next summer in my end of the Country. If you read the whole thread, you'll see what I'm trying to explain.

toffee1000 · 14/08/2017 16:32

SD from reading your posts you clearly live in a "microclimate" as you suggest. Most of the country is nothing like where you live. There will be maybe two-ish weeks of warm weather and that is it. Pleasant enough days for July/August (certainly not sweaty) and then it's soon back to the usual meh/cold/rain/grey skies.

JacquesHammer · 14/08/2017 16:35

and then it's soon back to the usual meh/cold/rain/grey skies

We've got grey skies today. I adore it. I have meen mooting taking various pictures and using them as art around my house Smile
