To want summer to be over?

Yes, I know I'm BU but I swear I have reverse SAD.

I hate the heat and humidity of the summer - it's either a scorching heatwave where you just sweat uncomfortably wherever you are, or it's pissing down but still hot so you get wet because putting a coat on is not an option.

I hate the lighter mornings because my insomnia gets even worse and I have a lot less sleep meaning I'm generally ratty for 3-4 months.

I hate the volume of people everywhere, the fact that you can't get into places, or onto beaches, and that the traffic increases a million fold so it takes forever to get from A to B. This works in cities with the infrastructure to cope, I do love being in a city and do just fine with the crowds in one, but in a small coastal town? Not so much. I appreciate tourists provide jobs (my own not so long ago) but when you just want to nip to the shop for bread and milk and it takes forever, it starts to drive me potty.

I hate the fact that there's bloody wasps everywhere and the fact that they stung DS on the mouth yesterday so he had to walk round with a cold pack on his lips and looked like he'd done 5 rounds of boxing.

I hate that I feel guilty for not being permanently cheerful because the suns out and have to hide my real feelings about it, which are basically "I hate this relentless sunshine, I want to curl up in the dark in a cold room and not have to go anywhere or see anything that's bright, sunny and lovely".

Yeah I know, I'm a grumpy ungrateful cow and I appreciate there are many (the majority) that enjoy the summer and all it brings, but I'm feeling really fed up and down about the summer like I do every year - I actively dread it in fact - and I can't wait for October/November when I feel happier, get more sleep, eat healthier and can listen to the sounds and smell the aromas that Autumn and winter bring... I can't be the only one, surely?

I just want to know why summer makes me feel so....depressed. Like I get really upset to see sunshine day after day, the heat makes me feel angry and stressed...when it's raining I feel calm and at peace, I'm fascinated by extreme weather systems... I think it is lack of sleep (in summer I average 3 hours every night, that goes up to around 5-6 peak winter) but I also don't tolerate heat at all, the slightest change in temperature I usually have to get changed as being really hot makes me very stressed. My uniform for about 7 months of the year is a pair of cropped jeans or shorts, t shirt and flip flops. Not at work though, obviously. Then it's a stiflingly warm dark coloured uniform Confused

Bit baffled, we don't actually live in a hot country though do we? Ok it was hot back in June/July for a couple of weeks but that was it. Cannot understand wanting 9 months of grey and sludge.

Minkyfluffster · 14/08/2017 12:11

I am sat here with sunburnt shoulders from a day out on the beach yesterday. South East of England, It was lovely but happy that its not too hot today.

absolutelyincredible · 14/08/2017 12:12

As an aside I think you are lucky if you hate summer to live in a country that hardly has one most years!

StewPots · 14/08/2017 12:12

Snork yeah we can loads of language students here... although I feel bad for them because they are targeted by the many shysters that live in the area and are often victims of mugging etc.

Plus locals really get fed up because they take up all the seats on the buses Grin

OP posts:
StewPots · 14/08/2017 12:14

Absolutely no I know it's not like abroad here (and for that I'm truly thankful) but I really don't tolerate heat well. At least if I'm somewhere with central heating in winter I can go outside to cool down...in summer it's hot inside and out!

OP posts:
StewPots · 14/08/2017 12:15

Time yes I e been looking at those for a while, must get them in! Lots of people swear by them!

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 14/08/2017 12:16

StewPots bah humbug
Shall we go and mutter away unreasonably somewhere? I think we need some serious tooth sucking as well. Plus I'm working all next week in Bath in city centre. You'll be able to hear my hypocritical combination of "I love this place' and 'fucking tourists' throughout the country.

NewPapaGuinea · 14/08/2017 12:17

You can't live in the UK as the weather this "summer" has been absolutely dire. I got wetter riding to work in June than I ever did riding in winter!

StewPots · 14/08/2017 12:17

Snork GrinGrinits ok, we can go on the "I hate winter" threads and post our cheer on there.

OP posts:
StewPots · 14/08/2017 12:18

New yep, SW UK. Thing is though it's hot rain! So a coat is no good so you're still hot but wet too!

OP posts:
Kazzyhoward · 14/08/2017 12:22

Summer?? What a joke. Here in Cumbria, we've had maybe 2 or 3 days that were "hot". It's rained virtually every day. We've actually had flooding a few times because of the heavy rain.

I've only managed to have barbecues twice. I've already been abroad for one holiday, and I'm about to book to go again at the end of August because I'm so fed up of the cold and wet we're having.

I'm no sun worshipper, but I do like to be able to get out for long walks, cycle rides, etc., and that's just been impossible this year.

I just can't believe Summer has been and gone and it's been so bad. I can't stand the thought of Autumn and Winter just around the corner with the miserable short days and even colder/wetter weather.

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 14/08/2017 12:22

Here are some nice woolly blankets for you to drool over

MrsJoyOdell · 14/08/2017 12:23

YADNBU. We are the normal ones, the 'summer people' are weird and WRONG. Grin

Warm boots, scarves, cold dark evenings so my children sleep, hot chocolate with marshmallows. Fireworks, Halloween, CHRISTMAS! What's not to love? It rains all year round anyway, at least I can curl up in a blanket and light candles in winter.

SD60659 · 14/08/2017 12:24

YANBU.
At all.

Are you sure you're not me?!

I despise spring and summer. The endless flies, unrelenting heat and humidity, flip flops everywhere you look. The crowds, the traffic, having to mow the lawn every 20 minutes. The sweating, the noise. Fucking birds squawking their stupid heads off from 4:30am because it's already blazing sunshine. Not being able to sleep because it's too hot and muggy. Everyone (almost) commenting on what a "lovely" day it allegedly is according to them. The take-for-granted bias of the weather forecast with quips such as "a lovely warm and sunny decade week to come" as if every living organism enjoys being roasted alive.

People eating nothing but weeds for 6 months (bring on the pies)

My job is near enough impossible in the heat, unbearable and nothing I enjoy in life happens in the summer, but everything I can't stand doesn't stop the entire stupid season.

You are definitely NOT alone. I think people have been conditioned to automatically "like" summer and anyone who doesn't is viewed as a weirdo. I mean what's to like about sweating your arse off for six months being eaten alive by parasites? What's to like about not being able to sleep?

I think I just fell in love with you and we should get married immediately.

KnitFastDieWarm · 14/08/2017 12:25

OP I'm the same, I often find the summer holidays vaguely depressing and dull, and I love the autumn and winter. I'm celtic, pale and rosy and suit autumn colours and tailored coats and boots and layers. I'm a knitter so I love having the excuse to wear all my handknit scarves, hats and gloves. I love everything about September to January - the anticipation, the fresh start, the back to school feeling, the chill in the air, the food, the celebrations, the dark evenings, the multiple excuses to see friends and family and get merry, even the ubiquitous pumpkin spice Grin

tabulahrasa · 14/08/2017 12:29

"plus the kids get to see snow which never, ever happens where we live, even in the depths of winter and the rest of the country is covered in it!"

We didn't really get snow last winter either, when I say we've had the same season all year, it's genuinely been the same, even my garden is confused and allover the place.

StewPots · 14/08/2017 12:29

SD GrinGrinloving that post! Summed up summer for me perfectly. I'm sooo glad I'm not alone in feeling this way.

Someone needs to invent a reverse light box complete with wind and rain sounds. I'd totally buy it.

Seriously though, it really does make me stressed, upset and very down, and the guilt of feeling this way makes it even worse.

OP posts:
cardibach · 14/08/2017 12:29

SD most of what you say is ridiculous over exaggeration (too much even for not very comic effect) but your assertion all this happens for 6 months is so out of the realms of reality I worry for you (assuming you are in the U.K., and if you aren't you really haven't got much worth saying about a U.K. summer anyway...). Summer weather, at best, comes in June, July and August. This year it only came in early July. You have 9 months for your weird love of grey, damp, miserable weather.

fleshmarketclose · 14/08/2017 12:32

I'm not a summer lover by any means but we have't really had a summer here this year (East Midlands). I think we had a week in early July when it was hot and sunny, my fans have been redundant again this year. Today we have rain again and I'm cold so have a cardigan and socks on. I do like to see the sun though and temperatures below 24 degrees and I'm happy.

StewPots · 14/08/2017 12:34

Jazzy I do really sympathise because I know most people don't really get a proper summer like we do here in the SW (although it has even rained a lot here recently - where I am tends to be one of the driest parts of the SW, so it's been unusual ) and as I say I feel really bad for wishing summer away, but it's the lack of sleep etc mentioned previously that makes me physically drained and mentally exhausted because I'm finding it tough. This means my days are even longer in a stressful job, exacerbating the stress I feel. And then the guilt of saying I hate summer and people genuinely looking aghast that I hate relentless sunshine. I know I'm in a minority and most would love to live where I live... when the kids have left school, if mine and DHs jobs allow, I think we will move elsewhere but that's a long way off yet.

Maybe Norway or something Grin

cardibach

Oh, you again. You don't like me very much, do you? Not that I care. OP found my post amusing so your take on it isn't really of much consequence. Yes, there's some exaggeration in there, but not a great deal. Some of it is for comedic effect, but seeing as you don't find me amusing why bother addressing me? Yes, I'm in the UK, South West (if your name is any clue then we aren't far apart at all in fact)

Please do enlighten us all as to what exactly is wrong with my post? What is out of the realms of reality? For the last hmmmm 5 years or so summer has actually started in spring, with devilishly hot temperatures lasting pretty much through to the end of September, so 6 months isn't an exaggeration. Might be different where you live, but then I'm not talking about where you live, I'm talking about where I live.

PNGirl · 14/08/2017 12:43

I now live in the South West (small town near Bath) and have for 10 years but I'm from near the Pennines in West Yorkshire. YANBU - I miss northern weather! It is particularly manky down here though; humid, insecty, packed trains, packed roads from Easter to Glastonbury weekend to the August Bank Holiday, and the bloody gulls.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/08/2017 12:44

I'm trying to make the most of it while it lasts, not looking forward to commuting to and from work in the dark, cold and wet and having to dry washing indoors. That said, we've got Bake Off and SCD to look forward to.
I like March/April with the promise of things to come.

pongoismyhero · 14/08/2017 12:44

OP I'm also in the SW. It's 19c Confused

I love winter too but it's not even 20c for crying out loud! I'm not complaining as this is a perfectly pleasant temperature for me, but it certainly isn't hot by any stretch of the imagination.
