To want summer to be over?

StewPots · 14/08/2017 10:57

Yes, I know I'm BU but I swear I have reverse SAD.

I hate the heat and humidity of the summer - it's either a scorching heatwave where you just sweat uncomfortably wherever you are, or it's pissing down but still hot so you get wet because putting a coat on is not an option.

I hate the lighter mornings because my insomnia gets even worse and I have a lot less sleep meaning I'm generally ratty for 3-4 months.

I hate the volume of people everywhere, the fact that you can't get into places, or onto beaches, and that the traffic increases a million fold so it takes forever to get from A to B. This works in cities with the infrastructure to cope, I do love being in a city and do just fine with the crowds in one, but in a small coastal town? Not so much. I appreciate tourists provide jobs (my own not so long ago) but when you just want to nip to the shop for bread and milk and it takes forever, it starts to drive me potty.

I hate the fact that there's bloody wasps everywhere and the fact that they stung DS on the mouth yesterday so he had to walk round with a cold pack on his lips and looked like he'd done 5 rounds of boxing.

I hate that I feel guilty for not being permanently cheerful because the suns out and have to hide my real feelings about it, which are basically "I hate this relentless sunshine, I want to curl up in the dark in a cold room and not have to go anywhere or see anything that's bright, sunny and lovely".

Yeah I know, I'm a grumpy ungrateful cow and I appreciate there are many (the majority) that enjoy the summer and all it brings, but I'm feeling really fed up and down about the summer like I do every year - I actively dread it in fact - and I can't wait for October/November when I feel happier, get more sleep, eat healthier and can listen to the sounds and smell the aromas that Autumn and winter bring... I can't be the only one, surely?

Sure, I've been pretty accepting of the microclimate thing. I think that is likely the case. So, with that said, what would you rather? I mean are you seriously telling me you wouldn't sweat in 30+ (C) heat and humidity over the 70% mark? It's not pleasant. There's nothing enjoyable about that. To me it's like saying "oh yes I do enjoy being smashed around the head with a cricket bat"

(No, I'm not saying you said that, I'm just trying to understand what's appealing about the weather I've been describing)

If you feel cold, you can do all sorts of things to warm up (even without being kinky) you can put an extra layer on, you can stand by a fire/radiator/have a hot bath/whatever - but when you're too hot you're options are more limited. I have an air con unit in the bedroom but it's kinda loud. I can fall asleep with it on but it'll wake me up at some point. So I'll get up and turn it off. Then we're back to the heat and humidity again.... vicious circle.

If we can just accept that people aren't all identical the world would be a better place. OP and I certainly aren't alone in what we're talking about, and neither are you.

Well the summer here has been rubbish not much heat to complain about.I had to get my cardies out.
What I love about summer, even in this country is not having to wear shoes and socks, that the house isn't full of damp washing.I have to wash less mud off the floor.I don't notice the smallness of the house because I can sit in the garden(sometimes). My gas/electricity bill is MUCH smaller.Flowers and green trees cheer me up.I love the longer evenings though it is getting dark earlier and I have to put my headlights on in the morning now.Fruit, salad, new potatoes all local or from the garden.
There's more to summer than heat,it has been so bad this year that many tourist areas have been very quiet and seasonal business has been very poor.
No doubt everyone will be back cursing winter especially if we get snow.
I'm still hoping for some sun but it's not looking promising.😢

toffee1000 · 14/08/2017 16:59

Of course I'd sweat in that weather. I suppose I can't really comment because I don't live where you do. Not many people do - your exact weather conditions are not what most people experience.
And I've totally come to accept that a lot of people prefer autumn and winter to spring and summer. I may not understand why but I know they do and accept it.

SD60659 · 14/08/2017 17:07

Very good response, I appreciate that. You can comment (as can anyone) as much as you like, it just helps a lot when people are digesting the actual point (which you have)

Maybe see how it pans out this autumn? Hopefully we'll have a "proper" one and maybe you can find the contentment, and dare I say it - magic that it offers too.

I've found this summer hard going mostly. Unrelenting humidity every day and even when it rains it has been sticky, warm rain. Although I work outside and DH who spends his days in an air conditioned office doesn't think it's been a hot one. I've had enough of BBQ's though Grin. No more please.

Violetcharlotte · 14/08/2017 17:31

I feel the same OP. I much prefer the Autumn to Summer.

The light evening and mornings play havoc with my sleep patterns and when it's light in the evening I feel like I should be doing something, I can't just curl up and relax with a book, so I'm always shattered.

I find summer is always such a disappointment. When the weathers great, it's always when I'm at work (stuck in a freezing cold ac office!) When I'm off and the kids are off, the weather is always shite!

Going anywhere takes forever as the traffics awful. And when you get there it's packed with people.

Plus I hate summer clothes!

Really can't wait for Autumn.. snuggly jumpers, boots, proper dinners, dark evenings with the curtains shut... bring it on!

toffee1000 · 14/08/2017 17:34

OK, I will admit summer is often a disappointment Grin My mother always says that the weather is decent for most of the summer but then starts pissing it down the week she goes on holiday. (Due to various reasons we've only holidayed in the UK recently.) Maybe part of my summer love is due to my birthday being in July, I always hope for decent weather on my birthday.

Fontella · 14/08/2017 17:43

I'm not looking forward to Summer being over, but I do prefer a cooler Summer. Those really hot days back in June were bloody awful!

We've had a lovely few days here, just nice - sunny most of the time, not hot, not cold just comfy. I love pottering around in the garden without getting hot and sweaty, and can work inside with doors and windows open for fresh air.

Some of us just prefer cooler weather. My idea of hell would be to live in Australia or somewhere like that and how people can go on holiday to the Costa Del Sol (or similar beach type resorts) and lay on a beach all day is just incomprehensible to me.

cardibach · 14/08/2017 17:55

SD since I live near you and have friends all over the three. Counties, how come I have never heard of this idyllic (to me) microclimate? What you are describing is so different from the weather anywhere else in the U.K. that I think it unlikely it would escape reporting. From my Met fiheures earlier you can see the highest temperature recorded in this part of the world was in Ceredigion, not Pembrokeshire. I'm afraid I just don't believe it. It's impossible that an area with temperatures regularly in the high 20s/30s where summer lasts six months would not be more widely known.

Delatron · 14/08/2017 18:05

I don't mind people hating 'Summer'. What is so annoying is quotes like this; 'relentless sunshine', 'devilishly hot'. I bloody wish and I live in the SE.

Stick to the facts please. Yes you may hate the warm weather we had earlier in the summer (for a few weeks), that heat broke on July 11th (I know this for a fact). Since then it has barely made early 20's. Lots of rain, washouts for weddings, festivals, U.K holidays ruined. So fine, hate the heat but it's so annoying when you summer haters actually rewrite history. Is it not enough that this country has cold, shit weather for about 9 months? That's not enough for you??

HotNatured · 14/08/2017 18:38

Why are some people getting irate about differences of opinion on weather ! This place is batshit some days Grin

toffee1000 · 14/08/2017 18:42

I think people just get tired of hearing others moan about summer weather when a) it's only been warm for 3 days or so and b) they've just had months and months of their preferred weather. It's a bit bizarre.

Brittbugs80 · 14/08/2017 18:48

I find it a lot easier to warm up than cool down, which is why I prefer September onwards.

But of course some folks on here don't understand that others don't share the love of the Summer months so therefore we are wrong, we are miserable etc.

I also love how the people who get shitty about us wishing the time away till Autumn are the same ones who are very vocal about wanting warmer weather to hurry up,.moan that the weather doesn't stay warm for long, claim we've only had 3 hot days this year, claim others are absolutely lying because they had hot weather and because one person doesn't remember it, they are lying etc.

I'm in the Midlands and keep a daily diary of different bits etc. I always record the weather and since April, the temperature has been above 15 degrees more than it has been below it and has spent more time around 20, which to me is a good run of warm weather.

UK will never reach and maintain tropical climates for any length of time. Where I am now, it's 18 degrees but overcast yet it's warm enough to be outside in just a t shirt.

AnnabelleLecter · 14/08/2017 18:49

Oh yes can't wait for gale force winds, dark mornings/evenings and freezing rain. Hmm
I would rather have summer even if it's rainy or too hot or muggy than any other season. At least it's mild and light so yabu.

abigailgabble · 14/08/2017 19:03

YANBU

I hate feeling like i should be doing something, #makingmemories, #adventuring, #blessed.

i like being indoors ok. when it rains that is socially acceptable.

Delatron · 14/08/2017 19:05

It's annoying when people moan about relentless heat when there hasn't been any
since early July. I had my heating on last week.

The one good thing about this shitty weather is that at least people can't moan about how it's too hot....yet they still do..

MangosteenSoda · 14/08/2017 19:11

There have been tons of threads about this on MN recently. Yanbu - each to their own of course, but I remain perplexed about this stifling weather about which people complain!?

I live abroad, but spend about 6 weeks every summer in NW England. It's rarely hot enough to wear a summer dress for the full day. Normal summer weather seems to be chilly, damp day with sunshine around 4/5pm. I spend most of the time in jeans. I thought the temperature was a bit warmer this year because I didn't wear a coat as much as last year!

horsesforcorses · 14/08/2017 19:15

I do love Autumn but summer finished before the children broke up didn't it!!??

LoniceraJaponica · 14/08/2017 19:16

StewPots I am enjoying your measured responses and get why you don't enjoy summer.

I have two questions for posters who have had a hot summer:

  1. Where do you live?
  2. At what temperature do you consider it hot weather? Not warm, but hot.

"I think people just get tired of hearing others moan about summer weather when a) it's only been warm for 3 days or so and b) they've just had months and months of their preferred weather. It's a bit bizarre."

This ^^

JacquesHammer · 14/08/2017 19:18

Oh yes can't wait for gale force winds

But being wrapped in a blanket on the sofa listening to the wind howl whilst reading is bliss

StewPots · 14/08/2017 19:20

Lonicera Thanks Grin

Well it seems like I kicked off a debate today didn't I but then I guess it IS AIBU Smile

Horses for courses etc etc, I am going to immerse myself in a cool bath shortly as it is a bit sticky here and put my fan on full blast... I certainly have to invest in a portable aircon unit though!

OP posts:
StewPots · 14/08/2017 19:23

And before anyone says it's not even properly hot... it's hot to me personally! So I shall bring my body temp right down, close my curtains and try and get a bit cooler... I think I should be studied for science 🔬

OP posts:
toffee1000 · 14/08/2017 19:25

StewPots you do sound a little unusual if you get hot even from central heating.

Brittbugs80 · 14/08/2017 19:30

I have two questions for posters who have had a hot summer:

  1. Where do you live?
  2. At what temperature do you consider it hot weather? Not warm, but hot

Live in the Midlands
The temp I consider hot is between 20 to 25 degrees. I was hot yesterday and caught the sun on my face and we were in Formby at the beach for the day.

Of course over 25 is hot and we don't often get that hot in this Country and if we do, it's for a short run because it's only ever due to the dregs of a heatwave elsewhere!

We went abroad in May and the hottest day there was 33, dropping to 27 then 23 on the night.

MangosteenSoda · 14/08/2017 19:36

I think it's totally normal to get hot from central heating in the UK! I can't remember many instances of being too hot to sleep in summer, but I clearly remember being boiling hot at my grandparents house every Christmas. They always had it baking like a sauna!

I've now spent 13 years in hot places where we have aircon but no heating. I really can't get used to being cold inside in winter!
