Just that really, I just feel that sometimes everything feels like it set up to help the dull.. Hang around for ages and you get promoted, don't have any interests or a social life, get a great credit rating, stay in one house for years and all the banks trust you, don't ever stick out, don't ever get hassled etc etc etc. .

Fact is, most people are pretty dull from the outside. There are very few people whose lives are inherently so interesting that I'd want to read about them - even people I deeply admire, I don't tend to pick up their biographies. You're always infinitely more interesting to yourself than to anyone else. So the idea that you should be rewarded for being sparklier than your more mainstream friend is just... odd. Why would that happen? I'm glad you enjoy being yourself but your inner life is just that - it's not very interesting to anyone outside your immediate circle.

The people who actually shine are the ones with the creativity and the drive and the discipline. I've written a bunch of novels in my head but who cares until I spend months or years at my desk, getting a numb bum while I write one down and rewrite and polish and make it good? Kylie didn't get to be Kylie without working her arse off, and her shine isn't going to come off on you just because you hung out that one time.

Op you remind me of a couple of people I know. They are trustafarians so they get the money and the freedom to do whatever it is they want to do next. Because they have never worked a proper job in their lives they lurch from place to place, dragging their children along with them or plonking them into boarding school so they can, you know, get on with the important task of 'being them'. They have what look like exciting lives on the outside. One of them likes to document hers on Instagram just to reinforce the fact her life is so exciting.

And do you know what? I don't envy them for one second. They may seem to be having a whale of a time hanging out with cool people in Goa, Bali, Ibiza and California from week to week. But I also know (through others who know them better than me) that their kids aren't happy, their marriages are breaking down, their friendships are fickle, and they move around so much because they genuinely believe that they will find happiness and inner peace one day if they can just change the environment and people they are surrounded by once they get bored of them. People like that will never be happy, because I know it sounds dull, but true happiness and spiritual fulfilment really is found within. Now, I'd better go and book a yoga retreat in Goa to remind me of that...

Pmsl op... brilliant thread title!

What a selfish, entiltled, dull, grabby, lazy twat.

Food banks aren't for people who feel their money should be spent on their whimsical plans.

Permanent contentment is much harder to achieve than fleeting ecstasy....

I spent my early twenties being a bit of a twat; lots of travelling, lots of spending, lots of drinking and lots of japery. I spent money like water and had nothing to show at the end of it but a cracking tan and a fuckawful credit rating.

I'm now married with 2 children, I teach, I have a spaniel and a lovely big house and a credit rating I'm thrilled with. I also drive a lovely, dull BMW and have a life which (to the outside world) is the least exciting ever. I sometimes go out with friends but am generally in bed by 11pm.

I've tried both. Being a frivolous twat doesn't bring happiness in the way that building a life, friendships, raising happy children in a secure home does. Being dull is brilliant.

I thought your twattish days were to shock the teenagers when they realise you know more about rolling a spliff than they do.....? Confused
