To not understand why drinking alcohol while your kids are asleep is ok but smoking weed is not?

QuackPorridgeBacon · 10/08/2017 13:08

I know this may sound like a twattish thread and I understand I may get a lot of shit for it.

The thing is though, I don't understand how wine and gin (two favourites on here) are seemingly ok to consume while kids are in bed sleeping, yet having a smoke is terrible.

Now, putting legalities aside (I don't think they matter seeing how some places are now legalising it can't be that bad) what is the issue with smoking but there seems to be no issue with drinking?

I see friends on fb and the like talking about having a few bottles almost every night some with really small babies (I'm terribly anxious so the younger the child the more I worry, even though I probably shouldn't lol) yet if you have a smoke you are deemed irresponisble and a druggie right up there with crack fs.

One person I know, would drink almost every night and would complain that her partner (now ex) would smoke weed. Yet I see them both as the same really, maybe I see the drinking as worse though because once you are drunk that's it there is no way to really stop that in an emergency. Smoking, you tend to snap out of it need be and are always alert and just snacking will make you feel how you did before anyway.

Basically, wondering what others views are?

What about those who have a glass or two of wine when are children are not asleep Shock - shock horror, does that make me a terrible mother?

winglesspegasus · 10/08/2017 14:29

off to the summer house

Redpony1 · 10/08/2017 14:29

Oh and just to add. I would never condone smoking in front of children or in the house. Outside then spray as you enter I would imagine. Kids don't need to know

No amount of 'spray' gets rid of the horrific smell of weed. It's truly horrendous.

Miserylovescompany2 · 10/08/2017 14:30

"does wine induce psychosis?" = yes - when drank to excess over years = alcohol induced psychosis in some cases

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 10/08/2017 14:31

Asides from the legalities, as pp said, drug dealers are utter scum, why would you fund that shit? Weed is stinky and skanky. If you have a glass of wine your house doesn't stink. It is ridiculous to compare the two. Seriously if someone has to ask this, should they even have children?

winglesspegasus · 10/08/2017 14:33

ghosty
yes wine can cause psychosis what do you think being drunk is?
how do you know your wine doesnt fund crime.pretty sure there are cartels and other criminal sorts who own vineyards.plus the slave/underpaid labor used to keep the vineyards going.
climbs back down off soapbox

Dlpdep · 10/08/2017 14:36

Let's imagine you lived somewhere that smoking weed was legal. I dunno -
Is it Colorado in the states? So the weed that would be consumed would be legally produced and sourced without any criminal funding.

Let's say the weed that was consumed was consumed in a way other than smoking. I dunno - I think brownies are the usual suspects on films, aren't they?

In these circumstances, so no legal issues, no criminal issues, no smoke issues, and in fact no question about how strong it may or not be as it would be a consumer product, in these circumstances, is it on par with drinking wine in the evening?

(Have I covered every eventuality there?

MakeItStopNeville · 10/08/2017 14:39

Everyone I know who enjoys the odd stoner night vapes now anyway. Reduces the smell and the mess.

Jux · 10/08/2017 14:39

I think if weed were legalised and controlled, sold by licenced seller, taxed, then you would know exactly what you were getting, just as you do with alcohol and fags.

I would prefer all drugs to be legalised, licenced and taxed etc.

I don't take drugs myself, except prescription (of which I take LOADS!!). but I know plenty of people who do, in the evenings, at weekends etc.

kel1234 · 10/08/2017 14:42

It's illegal, and the smell is awful as well (we had the misfortune to live above people who smoked it regularly, it was a house converted into 6 flats, 2 per floor), and the smell every day was too much. I was pregnant at the time, I had to hold my nose going past).

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 10/08/2017 14:42

Dlpdep, great question. Just to add, the weed is kept in a child -proof container and kept on a high shelf, well away from tiny hands.

DixieFlatline · 10/08/2017 14:43

Being drunk is not psychosis. 'kin hell. Hmm

Ah, yes. Eau de Halls of Residence, the smell of weed and own-brand febreze. Kids are not that stupid or lacking in nasal receptors. And smoke of any kind on clothes can still affect those around you.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 10/08/2017 14:45

little that is awful to hear and I am so sorry about what you have been through. He clearly has issues with the drugs and to use money needed for housing and food is disgusting!

Any smokers I know do with extra money they have after paying all the important things first. I think your ex is a twat and not clued up on drugs at all. Mushrooms are safer than an E for example.

actually 7 states and washington dc have legalized marijuana,at least another13 (i think havent checked lately) have legalized medical use.
more states are looking at total legelization.the boost to the economy is one of the deciding factors.

as for the smell what are they smoking bales of it/use a pipe or eat it

VladmirsPoutine · 10/08/2017 14:46

Jux That sort of reasonable thinking is probably why you're not a politician Wink

winglesspegasus · 10/08/2017 14:49

psychosis

Symptoms of psychosis include:

difficulty concentrating
depressed mood
sleeping too much or not enough
anxiety
suspiciousness
withdrawal from family and friends
delusions
hallucinations
disorganized speech, such as switching topics erratically
depression
suicidal thoughts or actions
itsmehi · 10/08/2017 14:49

Why is everyone saying it stinks? 🙃

LagunaBubbles · 10/08/2017 14:50

yes wine can cause psychosis what do you think being drunk is?

You are confused. Being drunk is not the same as a psychotic state.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/08/2017 14:50

Smoking, you tend to snap out of it need be and are always alert and just snacking will make you feel how you did before anyway. Do not kid yourself. I have seen someone's parenting massively impacted by weed to the extent that she had her child removed. And I feared for his life.

As I always say on these threads, I don't take illegal drugs. But I do think that the use and amount is the important thing, not the type of drug.

TmiTuesdays · 10/08/2017 14:51

Dlpdep Yep in those circumstances, absolutely fine. Which is why it should be legal and regulated (as long as the same rules apply for smoking weed as tobacco, and assuming said brownies or whatever are kept out of sight -but hiding delicious looking confectionery should be part of the skill set of any parent!Smile)

itsmehi · 10/08/2017 14:52

For every person suffering psychosis from smoking weed im sure there are a number more that have actually died/committed real crimes under the influence or as a result of drinking alcohol. Anyone actually met a psychotic stoned person?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

BabychamSocialist · 10/08/2017 14:54

I don't partake, but I don't care if others do. It's no more dangerous than alcohol or tobacco.

We should legalise it, tax it and sell it in licensed shops. It would be a good money raiser for the government, people would know what they were buying, and it would be harder for criminals to push it when it's so easily available at your corner shop.

It would also mean it's less attractive to teenagers - no illicit thrill of it being 'illegal' etc.

LagunaBubbles · 10/08/2017 14:56

Anyone actually met a psychotic stoned person?

Yes quite a few when I was working as a Psychiatric Nurse in the acute admission wards.

ComputerUserNotTrained · 10/08/2017 15:09

Both can be hugely damaging, but weed is psychoactive in a way alcohol isn't (ime at least).

As an aside, there's an advert on local radio which uses being a mum (at least iirc it refers specifically to the mum rather than a parent - I could be mistaken) wanting some wine, but the kids are in bed so she can't leave the house, as the scenario to advertise a late night booze delivery service. I think of MN every time I hear it - it would probably make an excellent AIBU Grin
