To ask what has gone wrong in the UK

Mumof56 · 10/08/2017 01:29

I'm talking about the latest sex grooming case in Newcastle. It's the seventh large scale sex gang scandal to hit the UK after cases from towns including Rotherham, Rochdale, Oxford and Bristol

I have seen nothing on mumsnet about this (although maybe I've missed it). This is shocking and outrageous. How has this been allowed to happen in so many areas? What is the solution?

This is "rape culture". Where are the (peaceful) protests and the show of support for these girls?

One of the things that has gone wrong is that the police and other authorities have been too scared of being called racist to do anything about organised abusers from certain cultures until recently. Yeah, rich white men culture. And poor Asian men culture. And tourist rapist culture. And Catholic culture. And American religious culture. And every other culture.

There are fuck all SWs and those that are are over-worked and simply don't have the resources or time to deal with young women who aren't in imminent peril of death. I think people don't get that as a SS worker I had multiple cases that could have gone horribly wrong. People who could have died. The public perception is that a SW team have one case that they ignore even though there is risk. The reality is that there are lots and lots and lots of people who could die at any one time being supported by SS.

Fund the Police and SS properly and deal with rape culture.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 10/08/2017 02:06

NAMALT = not all men are like that.

Yes Oswin I see we've had one comment on it already. Who looks at this story and what springs to mind is "but not all men do this".

Oswin · 10/08/2017 02:08

Of course the race of the men is important.
Go on Facebook look for similar articles. One with a white man grooming a teen girl. Like that footballer. Then find one with an Asian man.
See the difference in the comments.
If he's white she's a slag.
If he's Asian he should be hung.

It's this attitude that allows thousands of teen girls to be abused. Scared to report. Everyone they know calling them a slag. Rape victims going into hiding from random people ffs.

Don't try kid yourself this is just Asian men. Nah they got exposed cuz they are lower down the food chain.

Women and girls will carry on being abused and murdered until we can actually address the problem. Men.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 10/08/2017 02:11

YY Oswin. When it was a white perpetrator who'd groomed and sexually abused a child, the DM allowed one of their columnists to do a piece where she called the victim a 'slag' in the headline. No one seemed to care, and people even agreed with her.

I've heard from a few sources that this concept of the local authorities not investigating properly "because they were scared to be seen as racist" was not that big a factor - it was more a matter of percieving the victims as untrustworthy (young, in care, poor, working class, rebellious = well, they're all little scrubbers who tell lies, aren't they?)... and not really very important. Male predators have always been very good at picking victims who won't be believed, or who no one cares about.

Oswin · 10/08/2017 02:14

Let me state. I do not hate men. I have a wonderful father and three brothers.
They treat women like humans. I am the youngest but I was never treated like they own me. None of that no boyfriend crap. I was treated like they treat each other.

Yet I was still groomed and abused as a teen. And so many fucking times since.
So four brilliant males in my life does not mean I can't see that male violence is a massive problem.

Shadow666 · 10/08/2017 02:15

Did you read the link I posted? That the majority of these men in these rings is Asian has been proven in a study. I don't care about Daily Mail-style comments on the internet but in Britain there is a very real problem of gangs of predominantly Asian men grooming teenage white girls for sex,. This problem needs to be addressed not just "rape culture" in general which of course needs to be addressed but to deny that these gangs exist isn't helping. It's not racist to say there are gangs of Asian men grooming white teenage girls for sex. It's happening. It's real. To say well, white guys also groom girls is totally missing the point.

ReanimatedSGB · 10/08/2017 02:17

Also, as with what seems to have been a spate of street attacks in Germany, it was spun very much as 'immigrants attack Our Women' with a lot of foaming outrage from racists who were quite often the same people supporting rapist footballers over their victims. Men who get noisy about abuse of women when they can score racist points are not interested in supporting women or ending toxic masculinity.

scottishdiem · 10/08/2017 02:17

It will not change until women are on the streets protesting and demanding change. Instead of complaining about a lack of protests, organise one. The reaction to Trumps election had women travelling hundreds of miles to Washington DC. The attacks in India have had multiple protests by women. Even in Dublin, there was a big march against Catholic Nuns having technical ownership of a new national maternity hospital.

The UK rarely protests. And rarely votes for change at the ballot box. If women wanted to change things then they could through protests and votes. But not enough do.

Mumof56 · 10/08/2017 02:22

@Oswin as soon as we try Talk about it, it's all wahhhhhhh not all men

I have a wonderful father and three brothers.
They treat women like humans. I am the youngest but I was never treated like they own me. None of that no boyfriend crap. I was treated like they treat each other.

So to use your own words "wahhhhhhh not all men*

Confused

@Cherry Yes consent does need to be talked about. Unfortunately a lot of people don't understand it fully.

OP posts:
cowgirlsareforever · 10/08/2017 02:25

Hopefully we have seen the last of phrases such as 'it's their lifestyle choice' and 'child prostitute' in relation to the victims of these crimes.

Oswin · 10/08/2017 02:26

Are you confused? Why would you take bits of posts and mix them up? The post about my family is the normal disclaimer before I am accused of being a man hater, as usual.

Is anyone else confused by that or is it op being deliberately obtuse. What's your agenda here?

Shadow666 · 10/08/2017 02:27

Also, if we are talking about the victims of the crimes being investigated by operation Yewtree, a lot of the victims were boys.

Oswin · 10/08/2017 02:28

Shadow no ones denying it but it feels like a kick in the teeth that the same people who would scream abuse at your rapist of he's Asian would call you a slag if he's white.
Until we deal with people who can't stand the thought of men actually being accountable for their shit then it will continue.

@Scottish

I agree with your post. But the UK are well able to protest if they want. 2011 seen days long protest. Simple peaceful protests are deafeningly absent.

OP posts:
Atenco · 10/08/2017 02:53

Apart from the horror of this treatment of young girls, I was horrified by the reporting on the BBC where the rapists were majority of Asian descent and the victims majority white. So my mind that is shit-stirring and trying to promote racist violence.

BlindYeo · 10/08/2017 02:54

While I know it's not popular to mention it (understatement), I don't think it has helped that in the last twenty years, in which we have seen a quintupling of the immigration rate, the UK has welcomed a steep increase of men from cultures considerably more misogynistic than our own. It was an uphill task trying to raise the feminist consciousness of the existing male population. If one accepts the premise that male violence can be moderated through upbringing and education, one has to also accept that men brought up in more misogynistic cultures might create additional problems. And the more of such men there are, the more additional problems you might be adding. I think those who insist unfettered immigration is an unmitigated good should have a think about this.

elfinpre · 10/08/2017 03:35

Just about everywhere is more misogynistic than the UK, with a few exceptions.

But the UK is pretty good at it too. Let's tackle this globally. It will never improve if people don't emigrate, integrate, and learn from other countries.

Shadow666 · 10/08/2017 03:44

I think this is one of those threads where everyone is discussing different things.

AnneGrommit · 10/08/2017 03:56

There are plenty of white men grooming girls. There were loads of them hanging round me and my friends 30 years ago. They didn't operate as gangs as such but girls were certainly passed round. We called them "boyfriends", these men who were in some cases twice our age. The girls who got the worst of it boasted about their experiences because for them it was a mark of being "mature" and, sadly, wanted which just led to other predators having a go and the girls were labelled slags. I'm sure variations of the same have been going on since forever, immigrants or no immigrants.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 10/08/2017 05:52

People definitely don't understand consent, and too many people trivialise it unfortunately.

I agree with PP, it's men that are the problem, whatever race. They make up 96% of the sexual offenders in the UK. It shouldn't just be up to women to sort the problem out, it's about time men took an active role in protecting women, even if it means educating their peers and calling out sexist behaviour. I have a funny feeling sexist men would far more likely listen to criticism from a man than a woman.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 10/08/2017 05:53

Re the race problem, data shows that grooming gangs are mostly made up of Asian (usually British Pakistani) men, but white men make up the majority of sex offenders who act alone

Brittbugs80 · 10/08/2017 06:01

One of the things that has gone wrong is that the police and other authorities have been too scared of being called racist to do anything

And the question of it being brushed under the carpet and hushed up, particularly in the 80's and earlier when many high ranking Police, Politicians and people in power were also involved in rape/abuse against children of both sexes.
