To think Gabby Logan was out of order there?

A live interview on bbc2 with the head of the IAAF medical team on the decision for Makwala not to run due to illness. Pretty much ganged up with her guests and grilled the poor woman.

It wasnt even good journalism, they just repeatedly asked the same questions which she tried to answer with facts and it was clear she was u comfortable with their line of questioning. Almost felt a bit bullyish? Poor show from gabby

Yes, I'd agree actually. Like a bunch of people stamping thier feet and saying "its not fair".

So much worse if it spreads! Imagine if you were an athlete and caught it when it was preventable. How cross would you be then!!????

Whitecurrants · 08/08/2017 22:34

I thought it was rather aggressive too. Everybody thinks they’re Paxman these days, except for lovely Evan Davis

Sittinginthesun · 08/08/2017 22:35

Yes, we were just commenting on that.

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 08/08/2017 22:35

She certainly showed her ignorance.

I couldn't believe that bit when she said 'she understood' the problem about protecting the health of all the other athletes and still continued with her line of stupid questions.

Mind you, the athletics spokeswoman was pretty useless.

ludothedog · 08/08/2017 22:36

I thought that too. It was a bit much. I felt for the medical advisor.

Newdad19 · 08/08/2017 22:37

I thought Pam (medic lady) was actually quite good. She stuck to the facts. Yeh she was a bit atuttery at times but she was getting a 4 vs 1 live grilling and probably isnt on live tv every day of the week. Poor woman was doing her job.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 08/08/2017 22:37

I felt sorry for the poor woman who the IAAF had obviously thrown to the wolves last minute as they were getting such a hard time for not having sent anyone to speak to them.

CadnoDrwg · 08/08/2017 22:38

Completely agree. I understand why the IAAF acted the way they did, infection control is educated guess work.

They acted on the information they had available at that time. They absolutely do not deserved to be lynched for it.

thereallochnessmonster · 08/08/2017 22:39

Yes, dh and I felt the same. I thought the medial, adviser looked uncomfortable but held her own and didn't shout 'oh, for fuck's sake, I've just explained that' whenever she was asked a question she'd already answered.

And Paula Radcliffe asking why they didn't do a. Blood test - because you don't do a blood test for gastro! Gah.

Anyway, if you had been puking and pooing for 24h, you would be too knackered and wiped out to run, surely? Quite apart from infecting others?

Newdad19 · 08/08/2017 22:39

Its the fact she explained it was based on the facts that had been presented to the dr and the reasoning for the decision to protect many other athletes/staff etc. Yeh maybe his team said otherwise but whats the point in having the medical team if the likes of gabby logan is going to question the drs authenticity.

The worst of it was because bbc let it run for so long and kept goinf at her for the same points and almost taking turns each. Not nice.

Wowzel · 08/08/2017 22:39

I felt bad for her too, I changed channel for a bit as it was really uncomfortable.

I get that everyone is disappointed he can't run, but the 48 hr rule about D&V is pretty well publicised

moreshitandnofuckingredemption · 08/08/2017 22:39

It was awful, I can only presume they were filling time but no excuse for that behaviour. Everyone's a bloody expert these days

scrabbler3 · 08/08/2017 22:40

IAAF is riddled with problems.

The rep was brave to submit to a live interview.

badbadhusky · 08/08/2017 22:40

I hadn't appreciated it was such a long event - the guy in the beeb said 10 days of competition. I also heard on R4 earlier that 2 of the athletes tested positive for Norovirus. I think they made the right call. Can you imagine if they let infected athletes compete today & it then wiped out umpteen other events later this week?

Captainladder · 08/08/2017 22:40

I thought she was good too. She looked a bit fed up towards the end of it though...the bit about testing the bloods made me laugh.

IsabelleSE19 · 08/08/2017 22:41

Just came on here to say the same thing - I'm usually a fan of Gabby but the way she went on at that poor woman was unprofessional. Who did the panel think they were, questioning the medical judgement of an actual doctor, and a medical history given by the patient himself?

Thought the spokeswoman did really well to remain calm. Don't know why the BBC felt the need to devote 20 minutes to that unecessary grilling.

Failbydefault · 08/08/2017 22:42

It's another example of lay people thinking they know more than the medical experts. I was unimpressed with the line/tone of questioning.

Owletterocks · 08/08/2017 22:42

I have been shouting at the tv! They drove me mad, kept going on about the fact that he felt well enough to run and missing the point that he would spread the illness to everyone else. Then tried to compare it to an athlete who collapsed. The blood test comment was the final straw! Had to turn it off then.

hollytom · 08/08/2017 22:44

I agree I was shouting at the tv at the ignorance of some of their comments about blood tests

IsabelleSE19 · 08/08/2017 22:45

Also I thought it was a bit awkward spending all that time on the medical condition of someone who wasn't there - seemed a bit too personal and almost like they were talking about a racehorse rather than a human who might not want his temperature and vomiting described in detail in front of an audience of millions.

RiverTam · 08/08/2017 22:46

I caught a bit of this earlier, and the always-articulate Michael Johnson did seem to suggest that the pornlem was not with the medics, it was with the poor communication, which everyone nodded along to. I didn't see the actual IAAF bid interviewed though, but it appears that what she said didn't tally with an earlier press release? I may have got that wrong, though.

RandomHouseRules · 08/08/2017 22:46

Completely agree. Unfair things, like illness, happen in life. We have to trust medical professionals to make judgments that are for our own good, and the good of those around us. Pam did a very good job when faced with a lot of "It's not fair" attitudes - badly chaired by Gabby who should have been much more balanced - and a time slot which was too long for the topic.

RiverTam · 08/08/2017 22:46

Pornlem? Why the fuck is that on my autocorrect? Problem!!

Newdad19 · 08/08/2017 22:48

River I think there is discrepancies with what the report from the medical team said and what the athlete and his team said. The drs noted that he told them he was sick at 10pm and again a few times later. He claims he was getting treatment and not sick at 10pm.

I mean its unlikely the Drs gonna just make it up!

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 08/08/2017 22:49

The whole issue is a big lack of communication.

Plus there is the fact that the athletes and federations account of what has happened is different to that of the IAAF.

The IAAF have handled this badly imo.
