A live interview on bbc2 with the head of the IAAF medical team on the decision for Makwala not to run due to illness. Pretty much ganged up with her guests and grilled the poor woman.

It wasnt even good journalism, they just repeatedly asked the same questions which she tried to answer with facts and it was clear she was u comfortable with their line of questioning. Almost felt a bit bullyish? Poor show from gabby

she gave 3 contradictory how the decision was communicated she said immideiatley later on she said as soon as possible and lastly she said the team was hard to contact. which one is it also she said he was sick the night before they deney it and also if it was for health reasons the rest of the botswanan team would of contracted norovirus and trust me if he had it he wouldn't be able to compete

Leeds2 · 09/08/2017 17:08

I see. He is being given the chance to join the 200m semi finals later this evening if he gets the required time. I thought you meant he was going to do a 400m time trial by himself, and was wondering how that would work!

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/08/2017 17:08

By allowing him to run they are opening a whole new can of worms.

What about all those athelets that haven't had that opportunity?

Ridiculous.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 09/08/2017 17:25

The "if he had it wouldn't be able to compete" is a bit of a red herring.

People stupidly still manage to go into work with Norovirus and the Flu Virus. His feeling fine/appearing well is irrelevant. He experienced a symptom (if you believe their version) or several (if you believe the others) on Sunday night. Ergo he's still infectious for the 48hour period following that.

For those who think he wouldn't have been able to compete at all, read up on the Athlete who's name escapes me who still competed in Brazil. Then spent weeks in ITU afterwards. Not saying Makwana was THAT ill, just pointing out how an Athletes will can make them ingore their body.

It reminds me of the case of the doctor who came back into the country who had been suffering with Ebola, far more serious but they lied about her temperature didn't they (the nurse who took it on her return) . I mean can you imagine how that might have ended?!

Yes they did and you're right, it could have.

If she wasn't a volunteer who was being regular checked upon and went about her daily business. It would have ended very differently, and very badly I imagine too.

heartsandmindsalways · 09/08/2017 17:37

I suspect Themoonhatesthestars up thread may be right. Steve Cram had mentioned the night before that Makwala would need a medical certificate to miss the 200m heats - when he withdrew I don't think Cram knew he was ill at that point. Perhaps Makwala's team did not realise the significance of the medical certificate and how it would impact on the next 48 hours.
The points the panel made about the inconsistency of the IAAF may well be right and should be discussed but the manner that they all went about it was disgraceful and highly unprofessional.

Heartsandminds said it perfectly Star

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/08/2017 19:26

They couldn't run a piss up in a brewery.

That just about sums it up.

I did like his press ups at the end. Grin
