To think Gabby Logan was out of order there?

A live interview on bbc2 with the head of the IAAF medical team on the decision for Makwala not to run due to illness. Pretty much ganged up with her guests and grilled the poor woman.

It wasnt even good journalism, they just repeatedly asked the same questions which she tried to answer with facts and it was clear she was u comfortable with their line of questioning. Almost felt a bit bullyish? Poor show from gabby

And yeh I did find it a bit rich when they were all nodding along about how poor the communication had been whilst conducting , arguably, bbc sports worst interview in recollection.

Whatawaytomakealiving · 08/08/2017 22:50

We wondered just how 4 athletes/sports presenters had just become medical experts. Shocking. Handled very calmly by the lady being grilled though.

Newdad19 · 08/08/2017 22:50

Piglet, even if they have it doesnt excuse the line of questioning nor the ganging up on the lady tonight. They made their points again and again and the tone in general was questionable.

I also wondered if anyone had even bothered asking the athlete for his permission to discuss his medical condition/records on live TV

ShatnersBassoon · 08/08/2017 22:51

It was embarrassing. The poor medic woman having to repeat the same information over and over because they wouldn't/couldn't understand what they were being told. Then Denise Lewis asking her if she'd found out from the other teams if they'd mind competing against someone with the screaming shits had me chewing my fist with embarrassment! WTF does she think it is, a chicken pox party?

"You've ruined our fun, you big spoilsport, with your 'rules' and 'medical knowledge'..."

Gabby Logan is on my select and short List of Hated People. She earned that place.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 08/08/2017 22:53

I mean its unlikely the Drs gonna just make it up

Thing is the federation have proof as to where he was at that time.

None of us were there though so we don't know.

The IAAF aren't known for their good communication. This seems another example tbh.

I also wondered if anyone had even bothered asking the athlete for his permission to discuss his medical condition/records on live TV

He had himself previously as had his representatives.

Gabby Logan is on my select and short List of Hated People.

She is actually very nice.

Owletterocks · 08/08/2017 22:53

shatners that made me laugh too. Like they were meant to ask the other athletes if the minded getting norovirus (not to mention the staff and volunteers)

howabout · 08/08/2017 22:54

Completely agree. Think the BBC would have handled this much better if they had got both sides of the story sorted before they let anyone on air in the midst of live competition.

Denise Lewis' comment at the start comparing it to sending a not well child to school was bad enough to set me off shouting at the TV. No wonder people don't think the 48 hour rule applies to them, just everyone else, if you have 3 professional athletes pontificating nonsense.

PelorusJack · 08/08/2017 22:56

Gawd it was painful to watch wasn't it? The medical woman was really good, I think I'd have struggled to contain my frustration.

The others came across as a bit thick and unnecessarily aggressive.

Newdad19 · 08/08/2017 22:57

Piglet you are missing the point though. Even if they somehow fucked it up and there was the dispute regarding the details/none of us were there to know - it still doesnt five 4 journalists/sports personalities the right to interrogate someone live on tv in the manner they did

Im all for a bit of hard hitting journalism but that was bullying and it was uncomfortable to watch. Gabby may be quite nice in whichever circle you know her but she certainly did not come across nice tonight.

LowlandsUni · 08/08/2017 22:58

I do hope that this isn't one big misunderstanding over what the athlete said to the examining Dr. Yes the notes must say he had been vomiting for 18 hours, and frankly that is damming. But what did he actually say?

JaniceBattersby · 08/08/2017 22:58

They should have had her interviewed by a decent sports journalist who knows which questions to ask, and in a polite way, in order to get to the crux of the issue.

Putting her in front of four obviously biased athletes with zero journalistic talent was only ever going to make a mockery of the issues.

Imagine her delight when she found out who was doing her interview. Logan, Lewis, Radcliffe and Johnson. They're hardly Paxman, Humphreys Dimbleby and Snow are they?

emummy · 08/08/2017 22:59

I thought it was dreadful. The doctor explained the same thing over and over again, particularly that other teams were in the same positions and had all cooperated without complaint. Amazing that only this one team and athlete have been told nothing by anyone and are telling a completely different story to that recorded in the medical notes. I have done something new for me tonight, I have complained. So cross at this story being gone over and over all night with a total lack of understanding of the situation and then finishing with a bullying session. Not impressed.

Newdad19 · 08/08/2017 23:01

Emummy how do i complain?

OP posts:
Naicehamshop · 08/08/2017 23:02

Completely agree - the whole thing was unnecessarily aggressive.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 08/08/2017 23:03

Good grief you may not like what they were saying, I wasn't overly impressed with them or the IAAF spokesperson, however it was hardly bullying!

IAAF should have put someone forward for interview earlier. They aren't exactly short of spokespeople.

There should also been a statement from accreditation or those that pulled him from the competition as it is their communication that is the issue.

Lindy2 · 08/08/2017 23:03

I turned it off part way through it was so cringe worthy of the BBC. A person throwing up who is staying in a hotel where there is a confirmed outbreak of norovirus is almost certainly going to have norovirus. What is so difficult to understand about that? Healthy people don't generally spend the night randomly throwing up for no reason.

JamOrCreamFirst · 08/08/2017 23:03

Dreadful. I reckon the producer was in their earpieces asking them to keep the interview going until the next event. Poor woman did very well under the circs.

emummy · 08/08/2017 23:03

I looked on the BBC website; clicked on contact at the bottom and then on 'make a complaint'.

StiginaGrump · 08/08/2017 23:04

I didn't catch the interview but wonder if they were frustrated coz really they just wanted to say how inefficient and awful the IAAF is and to ask whether they would have dared do this to an American, for instance.

NanooCov · 08/08/2017 23:05

We've just had the same conversation. The four of them were rude, pseudo Paxmans who showed their ignorance (especially Paula Radcliffe banging on about a blood test being done to confirm the infection or otherwise - glad she was slapped down by the medic explaining the test). They gave a lot of airtime to the Botswana team reps earlier too and I think the lack of impartiality was astounding.

TheLambshankRedemption · 08/08/2017 23:07

It was awful.

I thought the rep did really well considering she was a non-presenter on live TV for a never ending bombardment of repeated questions. It all seemed so personal about the athlete.

I kept thinking for goodness sake, move on.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 08/08/2017 23:08

I think there may be an element of that, especially as they said, people were throwing up in Deli, but weren't stopped from competing.

Argeles · 08/08/2017 23:08

Gabby Logan is so up herself, a real nasty, bitchy woman. Nothing surprises me with her. She has zero talent or rapport, and only got to where she is today thanks to her father and husband. I don't know anyone in real life who can stomach her.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 08/08/2017 23:10

I don't know anyone in real life who can stomach her.

Good for you.

I do know her and I do like her.

HTH.
