To think Gabby Logan was out of order there?

A live interview on bbc2 with the head of the IAAF medical team on the decision for Makwala not to run due to illness. Pretty much ganged up with her guests and grilled the poor woman.

It wasnt even good journalism, they just repeatedly asked the same questions which she tried to answer with facts and it was clear she was u comfortable with their line of questioning. Almost felt a bit bullyish? Poor show from gabby

Olympic champion Elaine Thompson was also physically sick before the 100 meters final on Sunday, though the Jamaican said that was not unusual for her and hadn't had any effect on her below-par performance. She finished fifth.

Surely it must be fairly bog standard procedure at any games though to prevent an athlete from competing for 48 hours after vomiting due to a virus? I wouldn't have thought there would really be any grounds for disputing it really whoever they were.

It reminds me of the case of the doctor who came back into the country who had been suffering with Ebola, far more serious but they lied about her temperature didn't they (the nurse who took it on her return) . I mean can you imagine how that might have ended?!

derxa · 09/08/2017 11:24

He was very much with them though.
I think so. He thinks like a competitor. As in 'I would have been absolutely gutted'.

Botswana argument I think is that there is no 'proof' that he had a virus.

Athletics coverage on the BBC is absolutely dire. Haven't watched it for quite some time now, much prefer Eurosport where at least they show the athletics rather than the has-been athletes pontificating about what might have happened if the moon had been in ascendancy or some such other twaddle.

Eurosport didn't mention any of this last night, we just saw the athletics. Much better. The politics can then be left for a different forum.

lovingtheathletics · 09/08/2017 11:31

I suppose the danger is now that they won't admit to any vomiting etc and the bug then becomes a massive issue if spread indiscriminately.

There were records though of him admitting to vomiting, didn't he actually go to the medics for help? Backtracked massively when he realised he might not be allowed to compete.

lovingtheathletics · 09/08/2017 11:33

Mostly I agree user but I am very fond of Paula Radcliffe usually, love Colin Jackson when he's there and it does add a lot of insight and interest when it is past competitors commentating - where it completely falls down though is in instances like this though as clearly they are not trained professional in journalism.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/08/2017 11:35

If this is true then I think IAAF could come up against all sorts of problems over this.

lovingtheathletics · 09/08/2017 11:38

I suppose the other athletes would know if she was often sick (through nerves, adrenaline) I know a bloke who had to stop racing as he got so nervous he was sick every time. Her competitors would all know if that was the case as I imagine they are a very close knit bunch.

PelorusJack · 09/08/2017 11:41

I don't know the details about this but an incidence of someone being sick as a once off wouldn't necessarily be of any concern if they hadn't been in contact with any of the other people involved in the actual outbreak. If, for example, she had been sharing a room with someone who was confirmed as having the noro-virus then it be another matter all together.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/08/2017 11:49

PelorusJack that is the Botswanan arguement. He is saying he was only sick once. His fellow sprinters are still racing. In fact one was in the final last night.

Newdad19 · 09/08/2017 11:50

@Asalways did you actually watch the interview? I dont think one person has said on thia thread that Gabby Logan et al shouldn't have questions on the issue. It is clearly an issue that people are not clear on due to the discrepant stories and so they were correct to ask questions on the decision rationale. The point you are missing though is the way in which this was conducted, the rude tone and quick firing of the same points with complete disregard for the medical backing the lady had provided. Thats the issue people are upset with here.

lovingtheathletics · 09/08/2017 11:53

Do we know if he was staying with other athletes who had also been sick though? Same hotel, room mates etc? I though he'd initially said (and the doctor recorded) that he'd been sick several times rather than just the once.

It was the complete lack of respect that annoyed me too. Yes let's just fire down and ignore those pesky 'experts' again Hmm

mydogisthebest · 09/08/2017 11:53

I thought the interview/grilling was awful and made me cringe.

I have never liked Paula R and last night she just showed herself up with her stupidity. She comes across as such a know all

Newdad19 · 09/08/2017 11:55

But Piglet, the Botswanian argument is flawed because there is recorded medical evidence from the doctors that their account of this is not true. At the end.of the day you need to think about what the point in having these medical bodies is, if everytime a decision is made that they are not happy with then you are going to question the medical evidence that was presented. Yeh - their team may say the report is inaccurate but its funny how that was only the case after he found out he could not race.

The Federation are saying that the report is incorrect and that at one of the times it says he was being sick, they have proof that he was elsewhere.

Newdad19 · 09/08/2017 11:57

No the proof they have that he was "elsewhere" is actually that he was being treated. That doesnt mean to say he couldnt be sick whilst he was being treated.

Paper recording yes.

If there is video recording then it should be released. The truth would be known then wouldn't it.

lovingtheathletics · 09/08/2017 12:01

Wonder if the virus is contained and under control (in as much as it can be) for now and hopefully no-one else will be infected (god please not Mo!)

and yes if he was not allowed to compete if ill then it would be very dismaying but totally right.

Newdad19 · 09/08/2017 12:02

It would. But it would still make this thread valid as, as I have said to you numerous times now, my personal issue here is the way in which Gabby Logan conducted the interview - not the actual decision itself.

Agreed. I caught it and don't normally watch sport but I felt GL was questioning a medical professional in a critical manner about something she knew nothing about.

bruffin · 09/08/2017 12:04

Dd 19 also commented how rude GL was.
