The last few times I've been on a train (not in quiet coach) and quite often on the bus I've had my peace disturbed by toddlers with phones/tablets either playing noisy games on them or watching programmes. When I've asked parents to rein them in I've been invariably met with either passive aggressive remarks about not liking children (I have three myself) or outright hostility and a statement along the lines of "it keeps them quiet". No, it doesn't. It stops them from pestering you but it's far from quiet. AIBU or is this an accepted "thing" now? Because it's fucking annoying.

OP posts:

If they are too loud and yet people have said it doesn't matter how quiet the device is if there is any sound it isn't acceptable.

Well, yes, granny - that is indeed what the posters, etc, say about the minimal amount of sound leaking from headphones - if it bothers other people you should turn it down. I don't think anyone has yet made a poster about just blaring sound out with no headphones at all because I don't think anyone anticipated people being so antisocial as not to bother with headphones at all.

lucydogz · 11/08/2017 17:39

Good luck with getting mners to stop swearing on AIBU though. I've got to admire your ambition (and this isn't a very sweary thread)

YouTheCat · 11/08/2017 17:40

That was maybe 2 posters in the whole thread and you have been like a dog with a bone ever since.

grannytomine · 11/08/2017 17:40

Maybe no one thought adults would be so petty as to object to a child watching a video?

lucydogz · 11/08/2017 17:42

That's it, i'm off. This has got to be a troll.

grannytomine · 11/08/2017 17:42

lucydogz, I have no ambition to stop people swearing. Maybe you missed it but I said I ignore it because I don't expect to control everything other people do.

ArcheryAnnie · 11/08/2017 17:44

I don't think a single person minds any child watching a video. I certainly don't. What I do mind is being forced to listen to it with them, granny, to the detriment of my own journey.

Nobody has said they mind them watching a video. After 760 posts do you still not understand that it is the sound people have a problem with?
Headphones, that's all we ask. Easy to do, cheap to buy, saves so much unreasonableness.
(and the very very tiny minority who couldn't use headphones would have an easier time because we would know they have a good reason and weren't just one of the crowd of "I can do what I like" idiots)

notevernotnevernotnohow · 11/08/2017 19:07

YouTheCat, no one is forcing you to use public transport. Lots of alternatives

What alternatives exactly?

YouTheCat · 11/08/2017 19:24

Notever, apparently I could get a bike. I'm sure I can dip into my never ending funds for one. As it is, I tend to walk, mostly, but I don't think I could manage riding a bike even if I could afford one as traffic is a bit mad round here.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 11/08/2017 19:32

A bike? Oh, that will be useful for my 200km round trips with several children!

ArcheryAnnie · 11/08/2017 19:47

I think no other sentence could illustrate the cluelessness of this position better than this.

ypu can't really do much about other people's behaviour

This is a really bizarre attitude. You can't force anyone to behave the way you want them to, true, but you can at least try to influence how they behave by gently pointing it out to them when they are behaving in a manner that adversely effects other people.

(Also if some kids - and adults - cannot wear headphones.earphones because of SN, as people have already explained on this very thread, then what are they supposed to do if the noise bothers them?)

Yes totally have other options than public transport when my disabilities (cognitive and physical) mean I can't drive, ride a bike, walk medium/long distances or indeed work enough to afford a car anyway (or taxis). Helicopter would be nice, mind.

I've don't mind a bit of noise FWIW as I am well used to it, as are my two autistic kids, but the idea that you can simply choose not to use public transport as easily as you can choose not to use a forum... Confused :o

YouTheCat · 11/08/2017 20:36

I can't use ear plugs as I'm prone to ear infections. I do usually travel with my headphones though. Some noise gets through them, if people are being really noisy. If they are being that noisy then I think it's fair to say then they are making way too much noise.

YouTheCat · 11/08/2017 20:37

Peg, I have two kids with autism too. Small world and all that.

We can ALL use headphones! OP can listen to music to not hear the kids tablet. I can use them to not hear OP complaining about kids tablet. Kid can use them to hear peppa pig. Everyone has headphones. Everyone is happy, a bit intolerant and very antisocial Grin
