Apparently my husband Dosent and " why would I " Hmm
And the Lords Prayer is " all brainwashing bollox anyway " along with his theory That the christian church and the Catholic church are brainwashing bollox that sacrifice goats
I'm actually very disappointed in him
the Lords Prayer was said in primary school by the majority of primary school pupils right ? It was as commonplace as singing hymns
Admittedly I don't know the WHOLE of the National Anthem but I know the first verse at least
I find his attitude just fucking pig ignorant and down right rude
He's 46 years old for Christ sakes he's not 20 where it's probably not the done thing now

Nope, don't know either of them. Didn't do prayers in school when I went (I'm 28 now, so not that long ago) and I've never had reason to learn the national anthem. I DO know Flower of Scotland, though, so all's good.

Balfe · 06/08/2017 21:59

Joyful, Glorious, Sorrowful and JPII added Luminous!

Cannot do quadratic equations though. Ah well.

squoosh · 06/08/2017 22:00

Luminous. I didn't know that.

Mary had a lovely complexion though so maybe that's what they refer to. Wink

I learned about 4 verses of the national anthem in Brownies.
I never heard the Lords Prayer until i moved schools at 7.
None of my kids learnt the Lords Prayer but can sing the national anthem

Silverstreaks · 06/08/2017 22:01

I said the lords prayer all through school in many different countries. I didn't realise until I was in my twenties that I'd been saying many parts if it wrong all my life.

I'd never actually seen it written down and had just joined in the early morning muttering and made the approximate sounds of those around me. So funny when I distinguished and heard it all properly for the first time.

Guepe · 06/08/2017 22:01

The lord's prayer was thrust on us in school and I do remember it. I know the first verse and the chorus of the Welsh anthem, but don't know the British one very well.

user1498911589 · 06/08/2017 22:02

I know the 'God save the Queen' bit of the anthem, not sure I know the rest. As for the Lord's Prayer, I know it starts Our Father but beyond that no. I'm a long standing atheist though so I don't need to know it.

GherkinSnatch · 06/08/2017 22:02

DoesHe It was always "guess who" when I was at school. Could well be "against who?" though.

reuset My DSis and I used to "play Mass" to pass the time at my gran's house - she had the holy water and missals a-plenty. Ability to recite it from a young age certainly passed some boring visits where anyone under the age of 30 was expected to vanish into the ether for 4 hours.

goose1964 · 06/08/2017 22:03

I know the lord's prayer(in English and Welsh), and Mae Hen Wlad , God save the Queen ( first verse)and most of Flower of Scotland

Balfe · 06/08/2017 22:03

Mary had a lovely complexion though so maybe that's what they refer to

She was immaculate Wink

Gwenhwyfar · 06/08/2017 22:03

To be honest I think many of us can only recite The Lord's Prayer with other people i.e. when we hear the beginning of a line we can finish it, but we might not be able to recite it all by ourselves spontaneously. In my (normal state, not faith) school we said it every day at primary and at assemblies in secondary.

I don't know God Save the Queen, but that is not my national anthem. I know the first verse of Hen Wlad fy Nhadau. We don't generally sing the further verses though I could probably finish the lines if someone started them off for me.

squoosh · 06/08/2017 22:04

Protestants have a bonus bit at the end of the Our Father that Catholics don't say which leads to the Catholic guests at a mixed wedding sitting down before the other and then bobbing back up again when they realise the others are still praying Grin. I remember Dara O' Briain commenting on it in his standup.

Balfe · 06/08/2017 22:04

My brother and I used to play Mass with my mam's mop Grin

Bluesrunthegame · 06/08/2017 22:04

I know the Lord's Prayer, although I knew it as the Our Father for the first few years of my life. Also know the first verse of the National Anthem. I'm willing to bet my children don't know either of them. I'm not particularly bothered by this.

SuperBeagle · 06/08/2017 22:04

90% of people I know/am friends with don't know the Lord's Prayer, because they went to public schools.

I know it because I went to Catholic schools. I also think the Catholic church is a load of brainwashing bollocks, with a very dark past that I would never want to endorse by supporting them. I'm an atheist.

Why would non-religious people, or people of other religions, know the Lord's Prayer? Confused

emwithme · 06/08/2017 22:05

I know the Lord's Prayer (both the Catholic and Anglican versions), amongst other prayers, although some of them only come back when I'm surrounded by other people saying them.

I know (from memory) the First and Third (? - Thy Choicest Gifts verse) verses of the National Anthem and am dimly aware of the others (including the Marshall Wade verse). When I was in the Brownies I knew five verses.

I also know (well enough to sing along if necessary, and get earwormed by frequently) the US, Canadian, South African, Australian and New Zealand, French and German national anthems, and know the tune (well enough to hum it) to the Argentinian, Italian and RoI anthems. I can sing Flower of Scotland and Ireland's Call, although I keep defaulting to the "My Hen Laid A Haddock" version of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau I have watched FAR TOO MUCH international rugby

oldmanfromscene24 · 06/08/2017 22:05

I don't know the Lord's Prayer in English. Only in Welsh. I know the welsh national anthem though! Love it!

BeyondQueenOfLists · 06/08/2017 22:05

I know the words to both, but as an atheist republican I don't use either!!

I also know Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau and most of Flower of Scotland. I could also sing along to Inno di Mameli but can't guarantee that what I sing makes sense! Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 06/08/2017 22:06

"I live in Wales , and my children learnt the Lord's Prayer in Welsh ..Ein Tad ( I think ) so they don't know it , "

Of course they know it, they just know it in Welsh.
There are also traditional and modern versions in different languages.

Piggywaspushed · 06/08/2017 22:06

I can do the Lord's Prayer in Anglo Saxon!!

Do any of the Scots on here know the words tot he ACTUAL anthem? Scotland The Brave? Buggered if I do.

notaslimceagirl · 06/08/2017 22:06

Protestants have a bonus bit at the end of the Our Father Grin

Talisin · 06/08/2017 22:07

Have now googled it. Recognise it but certainly wouldn't be able to recite it. I did vaguely think it might be The Lord is my Shepherd one (which I know from every film and TV series funeral, ever) but no, that's another one.

squoosh · 06/08/2017 22:07

The Memorare too has stuck in my head. I had to learn that by heart when I was about 7.

I did not have a scooby what it meant.

bellaandby · 06/08/2017 22:08

I'm a rabid atheist and republican.

I know the Lord's Prayer and the Hail Mary. Hail Mary was morning assembly, TLP was afternoon register (Catholic school)

Hail Mary full of grace the lord is with thee
Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus

Holy Mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and in the hour of our need, amen

I always remember the pray for us sinners bit cause Tom from year 11 usually had his hand up my skirt at the time Blush

Piggywaspushed · 06/08/2017 22:08

And there are three versions in English : trespassers, debtors and sinners...
