Apparently my husband Dosent and " why would I " Hmm
And the Lords Prayer is " all brainwashing bollox anyway " along with his theory That the christian church and the Catholic church are brainwashing bollox that sacrifice goats
I'm actually very disappointed in him
the Lords Prayer was said in primary school by the majority of primary school pupils right ? It was as commonplace as singing hymns
Admittedly I don't know the WHOLE of the National Anthem but I know the first verse at least
I find his attitude just fucking pig ignorant and down right rude
He's 46 years old for Christ sakes he's not 20 where it's probably not the done thing now

I don't understand why it's rude not to know them though. Rude to who??

Balfe · 06/08/2017 21:52

I know all the words to the Macarena.

JasmineGreen · 06/08/2017 21:52

I don't know how a Christian cannot know the Lord's Prayer.

StuckInARut41 · 06/08/2017 21:52

I think it depends on the school you went to. My headmaster was hardcore Christian and we had that badboy (TLP) nailed in 40 minutes, I still remember and use it now. I can do most of the/my national anthem (Welsh) wouldn't bother with learning the English anthem as I'm not English, I'm sure it's very nice though.

Doilooklikeatourist · 06/08/2017 21:52

I know the Lords Prayer and the national anthem ( by which I assume you mean God save the Queen )
However I live in Wales , and my children learnt the Lord's Prayer in Welsh ..Ein Tad ( I think ) so they don't know it ,
Also , the Welsh national anthem is something completely different .
But I don't know that one

NoCapes · 06/08/2017 21:53

I don't know either of them

We did recite the Lord's Prayer in school but I doubt I could remember it now, and when j went to a christening a couple of years back it was a different version that I knew Confused

Couldn't tell you a word of the national anthem

You sound very aggressive though

NoMudNoLotus11 · 06/08/2017 21:53

I don't know the Lord's Prayer and have no interest in learning it.

londonrach · 06/08/2017 21:53

Neither but know more of the lords prayer i think. Hate the national anthem its very drab. Wish we could have something more upbeat

Balfe · 06/08/2017 21:53

I still remember how to say the Angelus

Gawd, I lost hours of my education to learning and saying the Angelus.

Who can name all the mysteries of the Rosary for ten points?

reuset · 06/08/2017 21:54

Yes, we called it the Our Father. Wasn't so much drummed into us as learned by going to mass from an early age. Many of us could have recited most of the whole mass I'm sure Grin

FlyingFox95 · 06/08/2017 21:55

I don't know the lord's prayer and don't intend to learn it. I really don't care, I'm not religious and happen to think it's a load of shit so why would I bother learning a prayer?

Just because someone has different priorities to you doesn't mean they're ignorant js

missyB1 · 06/08/2017 21:55

Catholic upbringing. I know the Our Father and the Hail Mary (my favourite).
Yes I know the first verse of the very boring national anthem.
Even my DH who is South African knows the first verse to the English national anthem - he does go to a lot of rugby games though!

squoosh · 06/08/2017 21:55

Yikes, the Mysteries of the Roasary are way beyond me. Although I know some are Joyful and some are Sorrowful. And some are possibly Glorious Grin

SpareChangeDownTheSofa · 06/08/2017 21:56

I still barely know the words to Auld lang syne, I just stand in the circle holding someone's hand and hum and say the title words now and again Grin

BloodWorries · 06/08/2017 21:56

I know the lords prayer from working in a religious school but didn't know it before that and would probably struggle to remember it now after not working there for a few years.

No idea how the national anthem goes, other than something about god save the queen. My parents aren't religious, my DP might know the lords prayer, but he would deny it and refuse, same with GOD save the Queen... Anything remotely religious to him is insulted.
But I'm an adult working in a school and I can't remember times tables... so a song and a prayer is pretty low on my list of things to try memorise.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 06/08/2017 21:56

Why does it matter? You can stand/kneel/sit depending on the context quietly through either, respecting others beliefs. Unless you are a prominent government figure or similar in the UK who also professes to be Christian, in which case I guess you would be expected to know both of them. Knowing things like that off by heart just to chant out meaninglessly to 'join in' is pointless IMO.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 06/08/2017 21:56

I'm surprised, given his age, he doesn't.

The Lords Prayer I learnt at school. Run of the mill infants/juniors in Hampshire in the 70's. Yep, I'm THAT old 😁. I don't have a religious bone in my body, but actually I like knowing that, it feels grounding/solid/culturally important. (Weird I know).

National Anthem - I think it's a bit poor if you don't know your OWN NA, whatever that might be. I know ours. We sang it at school 😊 God save our King is going to feel very, very, weird. Long live the Queen, I hate change 😬

Talisin · 06/08/2017 21:56

I know the first verse of the National Anthem. Not a clue about the Lords Prayer - I don't recall it ever being a part of school assembly (mind you, it was a very long time ago). I was in the Brownies so I would guess I must have heard it at some point as church attendance was needed to earn badges but I'm drawing a blank.

Carouselfish · 06/08/2017 21:56

YABU. Am 36. Sort of know the Lord's Prayer due to primary school. Know vaguely first verse of National Anthem though do know the tune at least. Neither are relevant to my life or of particular interest or aesthetic enjoyment - the reasons I'd know poems/songs.

JasmineGreen · 06/08/2017 21:56

As long as everyone knows the words to Happy Birthday, the sky will not fall in.

Littlecaf · 06/08/2017 21:57

FaceOnOff I think that's a generalisation, at my primary school, we recited it everyday and it wasn't a CofE or other Christian school. Just a normal state primary. In fact, the headteacher was Muslim.

In hindsight I presume the governors wished it to happen and parents expected it.

WhooooAmI24601 · 06/08/2017 21:57

I know both but doubt my DCs do. They don't attend church regularly and only hear God Save The Queen when I'm spangled at Jubilee parties.

Nicpem1982 · 06/08/2017 21:57

Not rtft

I went to an alternative school and we didn't learn either

I'm 35 + and have no interest in leaning either

notaslimceagirl · 06/08/2017 21:58

Presumably the op (who hasn't returned funnily enough) expects everyone on MN to be both Christian and British.

cardibach · 06/08/2017 21:58

*DeadDoorpost how foes this work? never learned the Lords Prayer (and I'm Christian)
It's a fundamental of Christianity - if you've been to church at all you'll know it, surely?
