Apparently my husband Dosent and " why would I " Hmm
And the Lords Prayer is " all brainwashing bollox anyway " along with his theory That the christian church and the Catholic church are brainwashing bollox that sacrifice goats
I'm actually very disappointed in him
the Lords Prayer was said in primary school by the majority of primary school pupils right ? It was as commonplace as singing hymns
Admittedly I don't know the WHOLE of the National Anthem but I know the first verse at least
I find his attitude just fucking pig ignorant and down right rude
He's 46 years old for Christ sakes he's not 20 where it's probably not the done thing now

There IS definitely someone who comes across as pig ignorant between the two of you.

It's not your DH.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/08/2017 22:09

Bell, I'm not Catholic but I sort of knew the Hail Mary you've just typed from TV and films.

Hassled · 06/08/2017 22:10

I remember Dara's spiel on the extra bastard bit of the Lord's Prayer that the Protestants own too :o.

I know all the words, despite not having lived in the UK until I was 10 - I have no faith but find the language and phrasing beautiful - "and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil..." It's wonderful stuff. I'm glad I know it, but I wouldn't describe someone who doesn't as "pig ignorant".

notaslimceagirl · 06/08/2017 22:10

I thought that the protestant version was a remix.

kmc1111 · 06/08/2017 22:10

I know the Lord's Prayer, but only from TV and films. Never said it in school (and I'm old), never been to church.

If other people are singing my countries national anthem it jogs my memory and I can sing along (for the first verse anyway), but right now I can't even think of how it begins.

JasmineGreen · 06/08/2017 22:11

Why would non-religious people, or people of other religions, know the Lord's Prayer?

People shouldn't know it off by heart, but people are often aware of it because it is central to a major world religion and the biggest religion in the UK. Never having heard it in the UK is a bit like never having heard of Stone Henge.

Many Muslims will be familiar with it because Jesus invented it and he's a prophet in Islam.

TeenAndTween · 06/08/2017 22:12

At boarding school we had to learn The Lords Prayer, The Creed and The General Thanksgiving (very long) and were tested on it in our first fortnight.

After a while they gave up making people learn the last one, as people learned it for the test and promptly forgot it, so they stuck a copy in one of the prayer books.

I wouldn't expect non practicing Christians to know the Lords Prayer, but I am a bit surprised by British people not knowing the first verse of the British national anthem (even if they are Scottish or Welsh).

SuperBeagle · 06/08/2017 22:12

Jasmine To be fair, I'm Australian, and Christianity isn't as central to our society as it seems to be in the UK. You'd never hear of religion having a place in public schools, for example.

GherkinSnatch · 06/08/2017 22:16

Grin The bonus Protestant bit.

To think EVERYONE knows the Lords Prayer and the National Anthem right ?
Gwenhwyfar · 06/08/2017 22:16

"I am a bit surprised by British people not knowing the first verse of the British national anthem (even if they are Scottish or Welsh)."

As a Welsh person I don't consider the English/British national anthem to be my own so I don't sing it or stand up for it. I'm also not a monarchist no reason I would sing for the Queen of England. I've only once ever been to a concert that finished with it, but been to hundreds that finish with our anthem.

JasmineGreen · 06/08/2017 22:16

SuperBeagle, I've often wondered that, how much people from very secular upbringings know about Christianity.

I expect people to know some of the basics, in the way people know the basics of Greek Myth.

Like, I'd expect people to know which angel appeared to Mary, where Jesus was crucified, what the feeding of the five thousand is, the lost sheep, Judas, Thomas etc.

CockacidalManiac · 06/08/2017 22:16

I only know (thanks to Father Dougal) that you say 'Eamonn' after you finish the prayer.

Balfe · 06/08/2017 22:17

Do any of the Scots on here know the words tot he ACTUAL anthem? Scotland The Brave?

Course.

DAH DAH de du du didi DAH DAH de du du di di....

Jessiecat27 · 06/08/2017 22:18

Haven't bothered to read all of this but I didn't even know we had a national anthem 😂 as for the Lords prayer i think we probably used to say it in primary school but although we sang a lot of religious hymns I'm certainly not religious and could probably just about remember it if someone else started it off. Not the end of the world

squoosh · 06/08/2017 22:19

Gherkin Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 06/08/2017 22:19

"Why would non-religious people, or people of other religions, know the Lord's Prayer?"

It's used in schools even when there are non-Christians present. Not something I think is right, but was definitely the case when I was growing up. I presume you'd also hear it on TV as I've heard Catholic sayings even though I'm a Protestant e.g. the Hail Mary and 'bless me father for I have sinned'.

Part of general knowledge, I suppose.

squoosh · 06/08/2017 22:19

I'm not British and even I know the first verse of God Save the Queen. Absorbed by osmosis.

Jessiecat27 · 06/08/2017 22:20

Oh hold on, is it that 'God save our queen'? If so I've heard it but I dont know it, can't stand the royal family either 😂

mygorgeousmilo · 06/08/2017 22:21

You're calling him fucking pig ignorant, and rude, AND taking the Lord's name in vain. So holy and pure of you Hmm

FWIW I know the Lord's prayed, can do a good Hail Mary, now a few nations anthems, and Buddhist prayers. Doesn't make me a pinnacle of the community, I just have a good memory for rhymes and songs. I could quite happily have them wiped from my mind, I don't worship gods or royals, and have no need. As with your case, being able to spout out a selection of words that you had drummed into you as a child, doesn't necessarily make you a good person.

squoosh · 06/08/2017 22:21

'I didn't even know we had a national anthem'

Ehhhmmmmm...

But what do you think British athletes listen to when they're standing on a podium receiving an Olympic medal? Or football players mumble along to pre an international? Chas n Dave? Grin

ReinettePompadour · 06/08/2017 22:21

I know the national anthem but the Lords prayer I would struggle with as most of words in my head are nonsense that typical kids swapped for the real words. Grin

DH knows the lords prayer but not the national anthem. Confused

BeyondQueenOfLists · 06/08/2017 22:21

Yeah I know the tune of Scotland the brave, does that count?

I missed one I know by heart - Dixie. Does that count? Technically the confederacy weren't a country, were they?

JamesBlonde1 · 06/08/2017 22:22

I know the Lord's Prayer from school. I thought all schools did it! I'm in my 40's. Ditto National Anthem.

I'm amazed so many don't to be honest. A shame really. Even if one is not religious, as our national religion I'm surprised some haven't been educated to it.

I'm with you OP. It's not clever not to know it.

I've said my piece. I'll go as I know some will snap at it.
