Yes or no...

Mouse
Totally. Just because I stand up for women does not mean I am trying to cut men off at the knees. Stopping the men who rape, abuse, threaten and bully women would be a good start. And stopping them abusing and threatening each other too

TakesTheCake · 06/08/2017 12:15

lass I did not mean no one talks about circumcision BECAUSE FGM
is a massive issue. I just meant it is odd how it is so accepted (for non-medical reasons) when FGM inspires outrage - and absolutely should too.

dontslouchdarling · 06/08/2017 12:15

it's seems on MN you can't be a feminist and support the rights of trans people

This is simply not true. It's perfectly possible to be a feminist and support the recognition of trans people and the right for trans people to identify as whatever they want. But as a feminist I also want there to be an open discussion about the potential impact that has on the rights of females.

NoLoveofMine · 06/08/2017 12:17

I completely agree CockacidalManiac and it's vital to have excellent men such as yourself supporting feminism. My father is much the same and my brothers are hopefully to be (one definitely already is). I have no doubt with your support your daughters will thrive.

By many people on the feminist board here, because I am male

The feminist or feminist ally point. Which sort of lends succour to my view that it is what you do or say which is more important than what you say you are. Why do you care whether you can be called a feminist?

TakesTheCake · 06/08/2017 12:18

And lass, not once in all my readings and watchings and listenings have I ever seen that about Karen Straughan. Where did you see it? Where can I read about that? If she did that, there is no defence.

ferntwist · 06/08/2017 12:18

Yes

BertrandRussell · 06/08/2017 12:18

"lass I did not mean no one talks about circumcision BECAUSE FGM

Might I suggest you have a search on Mumsnet for threads about circumcision? I think you might be a bit surprised.

ferntwist · 06/08/2017 12:19

As in yes I am a feminist, returning to the OP's original question!

The damage inflicted by FGM is not remotely comparable to a non- medical circumcision.

TakesTheCake · 06/08/2017 12:20

Bertrand, no, I have not researched it specifically on Mumsnet. I was more thinking of what I have seen and heard around me and in the media all my life.

retreatwhispering · 06/08/2017 12:20

Yes. I'm an old fashioned, second wave, radical feminist.

I don't hate men. Don't hate those men who claim to be women.

But I will resist beliefs and behaviours that damage women wherever I see them.

YogaDrone · 06/08/2017 12:21

Yes.

Of the radical persuasion. I think rather than having achieved a measure of equality women's rights are going backwards at a fair old pace at the moment.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/08/2017 12:22

Bertrand I can think of a 40 page one which you were probably on as well where I think one solitary poster was arguing in support of circumcision.

TakesTheCake · 06/08/2017 12:22

lass nobody is comparing the long-term damage done. FGM is with no doubt the one that causes life-changing damage. I am talking about taking a knife to boys' genitals, without anaesthetic, and the huge pain it causes those boys. That it what feels accepted.

TakesTheCake · 06/08/2017 12:23

retreatwhispering blthat is great. will you challenge beliefs and behaviours that damage men too?

Icantreachthepretzels · 06/08/2017 12:23

Why? What is this is fundamentally what most women want, is to be home with their children when they are young?

oh I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that someone had conducted a poll asking 3.5 billion women what most of them wanted out of life Wink

Gosh it's lucky that most of them wanted the same thing, and that that thing was a construct that has only really existed since the 20th century, and that that thing allows men to continue with their lives and careers unhampered after reproducing. Huzzah for everyone, problem solved.

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 06/08/2017 12:24

For all those bashing feminists because of trans issues, have a look at this thread and tell us who is doing the damage

AndNowItIsSeven · 06/08/2017 12:25

No.

WellErrr · 06/08/2017 12:25

Yes retreat, what about men?

As feminists, although it's lovely to think of women's rights, we mustn't forget what's actually important.

Fucks sake Takes Hmm

BertrandRussell · 06/08/2017 12:26

"Bertrand, no, I have not researched it specifically on Mumsnet. I was more thinking of what I have seen and heard around me and in the media all my life."

Might I suggest you do? You'll see a lot of Mumsnet feminists there!

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 06/08/2017 12:26

FGS Take FMG and circumcision are not remotely comparable. I mean, Jesus, do we have to draw you a diagram?

TakesTheCake · 06/08/2017 12:26

WellErr, I can take an interest in both. I think both are important. Why can't you?

TakesTheCake · 06/08/2017 12:27

Bertrand, I am relatively new to Mumsnet, but good suggestion - I will do that with interest.

WellErrr · 06/08/2017 12:27

Mumsnet does love a diagram assigned.....
