We're going to have to call a halt to Brexit aren't we?

Lukewarm Remain voter here. Understand that the Government has to listen to 'the will of the people' and all that.

But for the love of God, now that it's clear what absolute economic suicide we're committing surely we've got to put a halt to it whilst the govt and the opposition work out what the fuck's going on!

"No a vote is a vote. It is what it is."

That is the stupidest sentiment anyone could have on this issue - a historic act that will permanently alter the lives of UK citizens for generations. Moving forward with a decision that is clearly damaging and wrong is about as sensible as a surgeon continuing to amputate the wrong leg even after it's been pointed out to him with the justification "well I've made the first incision so I'll just carry on..."

Everyday we are experiencing new realisations, even more frightening is the fact that our government is making these "new realisations" of how fucking complex this process is everyday right along with us!

Getting our sovereignty back? Wake up people, if we continue with Brexit we'll simply become an insignificant unofficial colony of the USA ruled by whatever awful trade deal that idiot Fox signs with the USA.

NameChanger22 · 31/07/2017 19:55

I think I should stop reading these threads, they just make me worry more. I'm in a badly paid, insecure job. I'm expecting things to get very tough. I voted for and campaigned for remain. I know who my enemies are.

The leave voters I know haven't changed their minds. Most are still living in cloud cuckoo land and genuinely think things are going to improve when "we make our own laws". However, none of them can given any specific examples.

ElasticGirl · 31/07/2017 19:59

It will never happen, it's just too complicated to undo 40 years of legisation. We'll just waste a lot of time and money and then give up, and have endless temporary agreements. When anybody with any sense has left the UK anyway. We can't leave but other europeans will leave us and we'll be a lot worse off for it.

AndTheRestIsHysteria · 31/07/2017 20:00

My DP voted Leave and feels furious with himself now that he did. I think he should also be furious with the cynical people who duped him.

We do need to halt this, yes. People need to put the country and the younger generation before their own pride, I guess.

lljkk · 31/07/2017 20:34

"nurses that come here from overseas, may not have a good grasp of English or be as well trained as Brit nurses."

The UK doesn't come close to offering enough spaces to train all the nurses we need. We need huge hike in nurse-training spaces if we want hugely less overseas recruitment. The USA (like UK) also recruits medical people heavily from Vietnam, Philippines, India, etc.

Some stats where NHS staff come from. I'm surprised that non-British passport holders are only 10% of nurses/docs.

brendani9 · 31/07/2017 20:39

The end completely justifies the means, get shot of it ASAP.
Just end the bloody thing.
We fucked up.
Would win the Tory scum a lot more respect to admit that.
Won't happen though.

leddeeburdee · 31/07/2017 20:56

I can live in hope that we will.
I would love to see the billions of pounds and hours of time being sucked into Brexit being spent on schools, the NHS, mental health, child poverty etc rather than on lawyers and consultants.
I've tried very hard this last year to understand why people think this is a good thing, but I still can't find any compelling reasons. I'm very angry that we're pressing ahead with something that is such a great act of self harm withour a compelling majority or a clear plan.

AnnabelleLecter · 31/07/2017 21:16

If the Tories stopped bickering and actually came up a plan... can't imagine that happening.
Praying It will be another Tory U-turn.
Just hope it's not too late for us mere mortals.
DH's company have started hoofing people out with tempting early retirement deals.
Next it will be redundancies.

mummmy2017 · 31/07/2017 21:17

How can our Government know what to do when EU won't tell us what they are actually asking for.
Have they actually told us what they want the money for.
If you get a quote for a job of work would you pay it or would you want a breakdown of what they were doing in exchange for the cash?

AndTheRestIsHysteria · 31/07/2017 21:25

mummmy that's the sort of comment that makes me despair of the whole Brexit trajectory.

mummmy2017 · 31/07/2017 21:33

But why?
You keep saying we have not plans.
How can you have plans when the people who are going to bill you won't tell you what your paying for how much it will be.
I want us to leave, I want the money we pay to stop, for us to have control over the money.
Did you know someone in the UK who has done a job for 30 years, and done it well, can now be told they are doing it WRONG and have to retrain and do it a different way that is not as effect, because the EU don't want it done the old way...
Oh and pay £1,000 for the Privilege, and cost the company money in delayed time....
.

😂😂😂

I think it's obvious which side is living in cloud cuckoo land Grin

Here's a compromise: UK leaves the eu officially and legally but negotiates to remain in all the existing trade deals and keeping the regs and legislation as required. Fom included. Never mind the cost. Everybody will then be equally unhappy :)

NK493efc93X1277dd3d6d4 · 31/07/2017 22:53

Plenty of people on here so unbelievably scared of our country standing on its own feet. I can only assume they are young enough to not remember life before the EU told us what to do & when.

What iI find really scary is the totally negative outlook of many "remainers". Running scared & calling for the government to have some bottle and stop what the majority voted for is pretty pathetic in my opinion. It is they that should grow a pair.

I'm afraid of idiots.

HookandSwan · 31/07/2017 23:11

No because we live in a democracy not a dictatorship and hate it or love it, we are leaving the EU.

thecatfromjapan · 31/07/2017 23:16

I remember life before the UK joined the EU.

The country was poor. The food was expensive and limited in choice. Actually, many consumer things that we take for granted now were expensive and limited in choice. There was a massive gap between people who could afford things (and experiences) that most people take for granted now.

Seriously, every now and then, I pause when I'm in Lidl and imagine myself back to my youth and then just revel in how much membership of the EU has improved life in the UK at the most basic level.

I even remember UK-made items being cheaper to buy abroad than it the UK because the only way UK manufacturers could undercut European markets was to over-charge here, and the tariff situation made that possible.

People go on about how EU regulation doesn't allow protection of home markets - but they've forgotten the particular joy of that situation.

It was shit in the UK pre-EU. I just do not get where this rosy-hued nostalgia comes from. I figure it's because a lot of these people mix up the joy of being young, and the bitterness they feel about being old, with actual, real memories.

7Days · 31/07/2017 23:18

It's ok to change your mind when new information comes to light. Sensible, even.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 31/07/2017 23:27

David Cameron is totally to blame and no-one else: possibly the most stupid man in the whole history of stupidity, all after receiving the best education money can buy.

Yes, Flo, and I am SO going to use him when stupid, pathetic men (and unbelievably stupid women) claim men make better leaders than women!😃

CherryBlossomPink · 31/07/2017 23:29

Leaving the EU means that we get to put our interests first - something that the EU never did. They want us to stay as a net contributor and when Cameron was looking for a deal pre referendum did not want to discuss because they were too arrogant to think we would actually leave.
I think we are in for a tough spell, but still believe it's the right thing to do for the country - staying because it's what we are familiar with is a ridiculous reason to stay - you wouldn't tell an abused wife to stay in an abusve marriage because it's what she's always known!
I am educated post graduate level and took an informed decision to vote leave - I am not stupid enough to have believed the lies on either side of the campaign and do not regret my vote.
I believe this is the beginning of the end of the EU in its current form and I think a much better form of European co operation will take its place - I believe in free trade within Europe but not with all the strings currently attached.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 31/07/2017 23:29

To be fair, I do think the EU has had its day. It doesn't look too well to me, right now. I'm sure the Italians and Greeks have a lot to say about it...

Beebee7 · 31/07/2017 23:36

The last few posts of this thread have just verified what I said earlier; many of the remainers are a mix of people who benefit from being in the EU, and terrified Millennials who think if we leave, a massive 50 mile wall will be built all around the UK, stopping us from ever leaving the country!

I have literally heard people (under 30,) assuming we are leaving EUROPE (we are not!) that Australia is in the EU, and refusing to believe we pay £350 million a week - saying I obviously mean £350 million per year! Confused

I have also spoke to many people (under 30,) who cannot answer one single question about the EU or what it is, (and they voted for remain. Confused )

In my experience, the leave voters knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they voted to leave the EU, and they certainly knew their own minds more than many remain voters.

All I can say, with the attitude and sheer ignorance and hysteria being displayed by many remainers, is thank GOD the leave vote won.

And despite the comments from @thecatfromjapan about life being so awful pre EU. I was around then and certainly don't have the same memories as you!

And because life is soooooooo peachy now is it not? Higher house prices than ever before, (TRIPLE what they were 40 years ago if you take inflation into account, and no-one can afford to buy,) wages half what they were pre EU, 8 out of 10 new businesses fail in the first year, uni fees are exorbitant beyond belief, (leaving many of our young folk 40K plus in debt, and it's set to rise further to accommodate the pension shortfall,) many peoples pensions are going to be worth nothing, women can't afford to stay at home with their kids anymore, (but they can't afford childcare either,) communities are fractured as people have to leave homes as they can't afford the mortgage due to losing their job so they have to move, private rents are very high and take up almost 50% of some peoples incomes, there are fewer police and nurses than ever before, every professional (and none professional) job is stressful due to cutbacks causing staff shortages, doctors surgeries are at breaking point, schools are rammed and many kids cannot get even into the school that is in their catchment areas, and there is no longer any such thing as a job for life.

Yeah, it's just LOVELY now compared to pre EU days! PMSL!

Onwards and upwards, to the hardest Brexit possible!

Let's face it, things can't get much fucking worse!
