We're going to have to call a halt to Brexit aren't we?

Lukewarm Remain voter here. Understand that the Government has to listen to 'the will of the people' and all that.

But for the love of God, now that it's clear what absolute economic suicide we're committing surely we've got to put a halt to it whilst the govt and the opposition work out what the fuck's going on!

Talk the country down and it will go down
Must be some really very very weak country that would go down just because of talking. Can we please talk all the terrorists down? I would like to talk the NHS up alongwith the funding for schools in this country. and while we are at it, can some please please talk some of our national teams up in certain sports?
It would also be very very helpful if all of us could somehow talk up the country's science into great inventions and discoveries? It would give a nice boost to our economy for sure. It would be very helpful to talk up all the soldiers and police/firemen so we could have a thoroughly secure country to live in.

Is there anyone/thing I forgot?

valentine

My lottery win

Seems selfish but just imagine the benefit to the economy when I start spending

Happy to take one for the team

Valentine2 · 03/08/2017 22:52

rufus
You must promise you won't run away into the EU countries sunset with our money.

FlyingAnts · 03/08/2017 22:52

I talked about premium bonds this morning. I just received an email informing me of my £25 win.

If only I'd talked longer and louder, I'd be richer. Like, proper shrieking and ranting. That's how to save the nation, and prosper.

Valentine2 · 03/08/2017 22:58

flying
You nailed it. Looks like it is possible.

I'm looking into buying a megaphone with my winnings.

Oh, talking about the will of the people, and the 52 v 48, I love this chart.

I love how Remainers are filled with reverence for what the underage kids, and those who couldn't be bothered to vote, might have voted for. In this particular instance.

Talk the country down and it will go down

So if I keep saying stridently that I'm going to spontaneously grow bigger, perkier tits, it's going to happen? And Rufus is due her lottery win this weekend? Or does this fantastical getting your excuses in early only work when it comes to traitors of the Will Remainers not agreeing with Brexit? Hmm

If talking the country up actually worked, we'd be Empire 2.0 bestriding the universe already, with all foreign nations worshipping at our gilded sandals, trade deals scattered in pliant offering and unicorns prancing around our sunlit uplands whilst the EU would already have collapsed in a series of election routs as we were promised.

After all, we keep being reminded that The Will of the People was overwhelming and that "we" are all Coming Together. That's a lot of BeLeaving and Talking Up, isn't it? And if all that BeLeaving and Talking Up isn't enough to overcome a tiny minority of Treason, well I think some people ought to have a good look at themselves and their frankly mediocre efforts at BeLeaving and Talking Up.

sall74 · 04/08/2017 07:14

Scrumpernickel - You're entirely right... you can say fucked!

Unfortunately you are entirely wrong in claiming that the economy wasn't already completely fucked before Brexit and would remain fucked regardless of the result.

Peregrina · 04/08/2017 07:46

Didn't Liam Fox promise us that some big trade deal was going to be agreed on 24th July? I was just returning from holiday then, so missed it, whatever it was.

IroningMountain · 04/08/2017 07:52

I shouldn't think the EU is worried more thrilled at getting the spoils from the banking sector. Loving the workers won't want to move to Frankfurt straw clutching. The EU can make whatever rules they want, companies not so much. Wonder what backroom deals France and Germany are doing right now in order to get what we had and they wanted. Surely they'll make whatever rules they need to and divvy up the spoils from London. Then we get the lack of investment reported yesterday.....Kind of hard to talk shit up. You know that saying about not being able to make a silk purse......

Peregrina · 04/08/2017 07:57

I imagine it will only be senior people offered removal packages to Frankfurt or where-ever. Some of whom would happily do a weekly commute. Ordinary clerical workers and back office staff will just be given the push.

Talk the country down and it will go down. There is no reason the UK can't stand on it's own two feet. Switzerland and Norway manage to be happy and prosperous and they are on the same bloody continent as the rest of the EU.

They are indeed, and they're also members of the EFTA and EEA respectively, and signed up to Freedom of Movement as per EU law. Are you advocating that we do the same? Because I could certainly get on board with that. If we stay in the EEA and the single market, there's some chance this thing might not be an unmitigated disaster. I expect most Remainers would find this an acceptable compromise option.

I love even more how Leavers are so certain they don't, can't and shouldn't have any significance.

Because all we ever have is the outcome of an vote to go by, in all cases?

I can't believe that this requires explanation, but there you go.

IroningMountain · 04/08/2017 08:04

As an aside why can't we have an investigation into how far we were all duped. All the implications were not laid out. Yes some of us worked it out for ourselves but were Cornwall, the farmers, NHS hopefuls told the truth? If not then surely there should be some comeback. It's not the same as an election which will simply be rectified in 4 years. It will take generations to get over this, if we ever will. It is going to hurt financially for a long time. Living expenses are going to be shite and hit the part of the population duped the most the hardest. Many are just getting by as it is and we aren't even out yet. There is no room for sky high food prices, lack of investment, falling tax revenue, job losses, reduction in opportunities for the young, pension losses......

It's scary. The only ones who can talk any of that up are those who won't really struggle from any of the above.

We've now learned that Corbyn is changing his story on student debt - should we recall the General Election on the basis that the youth vote directly affected the outcome?

I do feel as if we're all on a bus together, and it's rapidly becoming clear that the bus is headed for a cliff. And while half the people are going "This really isn't a good idea, we need to turn around", the other half are saying, "Stop being so negative! You just need to be more positive and it will all work out!"

And their last words as we drive off the cliff and plunge into the icy waters will be: "You lost! Suck it up!"
