Aibu to think I've just fallen into a 1970s Jilly Cooper novel?

(light-hearted) fur Jilly Cooper fans really...

I'm at home desperately trying to finish some bookkeeping, not showered, greasy hair, flung on old t shirt and shorts, no make up, with no knickers and underwire poking out of my bra. I've just been trying to put some paperwork in the attic and the bastard ladder breaks and I'm trying to somehow get it to go back up in the attic. Cursing, swearing etc. There's a knock on the door.

It's this chap from Texas I've been dating for a couple of months very half heartedly as tbh I'm finding it hard to be emotionally available due to slightly being hung up on on the ex still.

There's me all flustered as I'm looking a total mess and he proceeds to fix the ladder with me simpering 'thank you so much!' and then ravish me telling me how gorgeous i am with me going 'but i look such a state!'

I feel like Janey typing 'men should not drop in' 😂😂

Or pilchards for the paella because the village shop doesn't have squid!

MrsHathaway · 30/07/2017 10:56

I'm muddling her with Helen who can't wear heels when she's with Jake, sorry. Even at 5'5" she would only just be nudging into "overweight" mind you. She'd be maybe a 12-14?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 30/07/2017 11:33

I think Tory was quite tall. She was a size 18 at the beginning but lost weight through love and could get easily into a size 16 skirt. But yes, 11 stone for tall women is not that hefty!

MrsHathaway · 30/07/2017 12:18

Seventies sizing must have been pretty brutal for her to be an 18 at 11st though, unless she was maybe five foot nothing. I know that when Jake runs away with Helen and she loses lots of weight, nobody notices because (1) they're all so fucking self absorbed and (2) she wears the same oversized clothing that disguises the loss.

Maybe cowbag Molly encouraged her to wear clothes too big so she could have a go at her about her size? Rich Granny makes some comment about how the clothes Molly buys her are not helpful shapes/fabric.

I'm several hundred miles from my copy, and the details are annoying me.

All my mum's seventies clothes are a size 12 and I reckon are the equivalent of a topshop size 8, so maybe she's more of a modern 12/14 as you say MrsH.

This thread has made me really want to read the name books again. Harriet was my favourite, followed by Imogen. I wonder if you can get them on Amazon?

confusedandemployed · 30/07/2017 13:07

Oh, oh, oh, St Jilly of Cooper. She's wonderful. I am going to start back at the very beginning, read all the name books and go on to the Rutshire Chronicles.

Thank you mn for reminding me!

Violetcharlotte · 30/07/2017 13:37

I've just downloaded Harriet and Imogen onto my Kindle Confused

BalloonSlayer · 30/07/2017 15:21

I think Tory is described as tallish

confusedandemployed · 30/07/2017 16:31

Violetcharlotte I've just got Octavia, the first one I ever read.

MrsHathaway · 30/07/2017 16:42

I've not read many name books and I can't remember which ... but there's one where she goes to a fritefly posh house party for the weekend with her posh-but-turns-out-to-be-arsehole boyfriend, who neglects to put her case in the boot so she has to manage on castoffs and whatever she'd shoved into a small bag. The horror of that scenario stayed with me Grin
