Those of you who have recent work or study experience.

Would you mind listing institution names and their policies?

NC if you need to of course.

This bullshit that feminists on MN hate trans people. It's bollocks. If someone could guarantee me just as many loos, changing rooms and so on that were gender neutral, lockable, enclosed and available, I would think that was great. Works for everyone. What I think isn't great is any man being able to say, "I am a woman" and come into women's single sex facilities and no one being able to even express a slight concern.

And I am really worried about prisons, rape crisis, DV shelters and homeless shelters where women are housed separately. In my city there are only two DV shelters. A male perpetrator, identifying as a woman, could get placed in one. And, yes, some male perpetrators of DV would go to those lengths. Absolutely no doubt in my mind.

And if I ask for a female HCP to do a smear or internal, I mean someone without a penis. I cannot understand how that is a difficult concept.

hasitcometothis33 · 26/07/2017 22:14

And it turns out to be be about trans.

Who'd a thunk it?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/07/2017 22:15

Glasgow University:

"A trans person should have access to ‘men-only’ and ‘women-only’ areas – such as changing rooms and toilets – according to the gender in which they present. The University of Glasgow also provides gender neutral toilet facilities in various locations on campus – details can be found on the Equality and Diversity Unit’s website."

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/07/2017 22:18

Edinburgh University:

A trans person should have access to ‘men-only’ and ‘women-only’ areas according to
their gender identity. Ideally there should be access to gender neutral toilet facilities
wherever this can be reasonably accommodated. The University and the individual will
agree the point at which the use of facilities such as changing rooms, shower rooms and
toilets change from one sex to the other. Requiring the person to use accessible toilet
facilities is not acceptable unless the individual is disabled.

OhLaVache · 26/07/2017 22:19

Just something to chuck into the mix - in the US (where the trans toilet ridiculousness kicked off) how many attacks on cis women have been carried out by trans women in toilets? Zero. How many attacks on women carried out by male republican senators in toilets? 4. 'Nuff said. My uni has 'trans women welcome' signs on the women's toilets and I'm 100% behind that. Plus - anyone weeping about their daughters' safety in the face of the threat from trans women should take a second to realise that trans women themselves are among the most vulnerable and attacked group in society.

VeryButchyRestingFace · 26/07/2017 22:20

University of Strathclyde and University of Sussex (I get about) have "All gender" loos, in addition to the usual suspects.

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 22:21

MrsTerry there are currently at least 3 other threads for you to spout that stuff, unless you have some info on your university for this thread can you stay at least vaguely on topic?

Columbine True! Maybe Norwich is a bit of an outlier

Serf I found another thing on my search, which has a list of other universities with GN facilities, shall I list them?

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 22:22

OhLa you're, sadly, fighting a losing battle on here, but I'm pleased that the rest of the world seems to be a lot more tolerant.

ThinkOfTheHorses · 26/07/2017 22:23

At Lancaster Uni the lockers are seperate .. there are also many segregated toilets and many unisex ( all their own mini room not like cubicles)

ThinkOfTheHorses · 26/07/2017 22:23

I graduated last year

MrsTerry there are currently at least 3 other threads for you to spout that stuff, unless you have some info on your university for this thread can you stay at least vaguely on topic? I was referring to the constant derailing comments from another poster. Had the thread kept on topic, I wouldn't have commented. It was the snide digs at MN feminists that I objected to.

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 22:27

Birmingham
Manchester
Staffordshire

All have GN toilets, not sure of their gender-ID policies though so you might have to do some googling.

bellasuewow · 26/07/2017 22:29

Loos are segregated along the lines of sex not gender so why use a loo designated as a women's only loo if you are a man but chose to live a female gender. If loos are unisex then fine but if they are designated by sex then why use them if you are not that sex. I am a woman and I would not use a men's loo out of respecting the rules of who is allowed to use that space.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/07/2017 22:30

FWIW the non-UK university near me has made all stalls GN and their advice to people who aren't comfortable is; to seek out a single stall (which are for disabled people so not an option), 'hold it', or become comfortable with the multi-gender stalls.

PeggyPatchandPoppy · 26/07/2017 22:30

Columbine I am a Norfolk Man woman and glory in being so!
It may be the company I keep but I am surrounded by very inclusive people. But I was wrong to generalise especially as I was moaning about people doing it. I apologise.

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 22:31

Sorry, most were just us getting excited about our shared uni experience, I do understand why trans inclusive people on here are a bit snide...the MN feminists can be quite exclusionary (and downright nasty sometimes) to people who disagree with them.

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 22:32

bella as you can see from most of the policies, most places use gender, and gender-identity, to class their facilities.

OhLaVache · 26/07/2017 22:32

I fear you're right loops ... and no way am I sharing which uni I'm at, to fuel this transphobic hysteria. The poster worried for her daughter should ask her daughter how she feels... most students I teach are very liberal and trans friendly.

ThinkOfTheHorses · 26/07/2017 22:33

Lancaster also has safe spaces if needed

JamPasty · 26/07/2017 22:34

OhLaVache I think you're missing the point. It's not the risk of transwomen attacking women in the toilets. I have no more fear of someone born male living as a woman than I do of someone born a woman. It's that if you allow anyone to self identify, any man with assault/rape on his mind walking into a women-only space (under cover of saying "I am a woman so I can be in here") to attack women, and there is sod all women can do to prevent him access. Example, Ian Huntley can claim to be a woman so he can share a prison with women. Clearly he's not a transwoman, but he's using all this "self-identify" stuff as a way to get access to women. We need to maintain a way of saying no to people like this.

inkzooka · 26/07/2017 22:34

Not going to say which uni because of reasons, but there's male, female and gender neutral toilets. However, trans people can use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender without argument, many just feel more comfortable using the GN toilets because there have been incidents on nights out of trans people (friends of mine!) being attacked in the bathrooms.

PeggyPatchandPoppy · 26/07/2017 22:34

I apologise Mrs I wrote my post the same time you wrote yours. Got a bit excited. I can see how it is derailing though so I do apologise.

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 22:34

MrsTerry so...the options trans people had before they changed the rules? "use a disabled toilet" "hold it" or "use a lavatory you are massively uncomfortable about using"
