Those of you who have recent work or study experience.

Would you mind listing institution names and their policies?

NC if you need to of course.

You'll have to go and argue with someone else. Sorry.

Serf I haven't vanished it's just proving really difficult to find anything written down, which does surprise me, not sure if this is due to poor website design or actually them not having policies. I can tell you my experience if that's helpful?

SerfTerf · 26/07/2017 21:40

Yes please Loop

I think we went to the same uni around the same time DSHathaway (near where they signed the Magna Carta?)

I remember the loo getting changed to a unisex one in the SU but I'm pretty sure all the libraries and academic buildings just had M and F. Apart from IIRC one really old maths block had no ladies!!

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 21:49

Found things!! Ok, so, this is the Student Union policy on trans and non-binary students.

s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/nusdigital/document/documents/18686/2936dce4c57898c0c21bb9377c406bea/1740%20Trans%20Policy%2015%20Oct%2015.pdf

Points 9 and 10 are about toilets.

My experience: we have gender neutral toilets in the SU building, as well as a designated gender neutral toilet in every teaching building/close to every teaching building and in the library. Aside from within the SU building, where all the toilets (I think) are gender neutral, there are also male and female toilets.

Students can use the toilet that they feel most comfortable using because of their gender identity. We haven't had any incidents in or due to the gender neutral facilities, and students and guests (I do campus tours) seem to like them, but our uni also has the fortune of being "20% gayer than the national average" lol

Gender neutral toilets were brought in after strong campaigning by trans and non-binary students and staff.

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 21:49

Oh, and when they brought in the GN toilets they made every effort to not reduce the number of available women's toilets

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 21:50

ahh sorry for the triple post, that's points 9 and 10 in the second list

PeggyPatchandPoppy · 26/07/2017 21:55

I also went to UEA and we had unisex toilets there. My main issue was they stunk but obviously there are other issues.

hasitcometothis33 · 26/07/2017 21:56

Trans it is :)

specialsubject · 26/07/2017 21:57

Women assault too. Keeping away from those nasty men doesn't guarantee anything.

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 21:59

peggy That's a shame, they're pretty clean now haha definitely don't stink.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 26/07/2017 21:59

Your username doesn't inspire confidence in a neutral perspective, OP.

Unless it's ironic?

SerfTerf · 26/07/2017 21:59

Thanks loop Smile

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 22:01

has yeh, it is pretty obvious haha but to be honest, if we can show that a) these sorts of things already exist and b) it hasn't led to the complete hellfire destruction of communities, maybe some people will have pause for thought.

PeggyPatchandPoppy · 26/07/2017 22:01

Loops this was last year. I'm not blaming men at all btw I just don't think they were cleaned often enough. The girls toilets also smelt!
What UEA needed was more toilets in the bloody teaching part of the uni. The closed the toilets in out building so there were only two toilets for science and education schools.

dinosaursandtea · 26/07/2017 22:02

Loops Oh my god, someone enthusiastic and on board with trans inclusion on Mumsnet. I think I might love you.

SerfTerf · 26/07/2017 22:04

TBH, loops, Is think the "three option solution" is probably the answer that nearly everyone would be happy with, so it's nice to hear tales of it working Smile

PeggyPatchandPoppy · 26/07/2017 22:05

Dinosaur UEA is huge on issues like this! Incredibly inclusive and welcoming. Proud to have attended it.

SerfTerf · 26/07/2017 22:05

Does anyone know about any of the Scottish unis?

OP posts:
Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 22:05

dinosaurs that makes one person hahaha Peggy Oh awesome, new grad? I totally agree with you, along with more study space, more eating options lol I could go on. I do think they've gotten better at cleaning then, cause I haven't noticed smelly loos, but I don't use them enough to judge properly.

TheNoseyProject · 26/07/2017 22:06

Sheffield university counselling service had individual loos which have signs on the front which say gender neutral specifically (they don't just say wc or unisex)

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 22:07

serf yeh I'd agree, but UEA also allows students to self-ID and use the bathroom that they feel fits with their gender ID, they're also actively campaigning for the changes to the gender recognition act...so probably wouldn't be super loved in these parts.

PeggyPatchandPoppy · 26/07/2017 22:07

Loops I graduated last year :-). I was only on campus for 20% of my course but loved UEA. Norfolk is more forward thinking than people give it credit for.

Loopsdefruits · 26/07/2017 22:10

Peggy Right!! It's such a nice place to live, I found a group in Norwich for LGBT/LGBT affirming Christians and I'm so happy!

Columbine1 · 26/07/2017 22:11

UEA is quite forward thinking (I'm a grad too) but please don't conflate this with Norfolk which isn't in so many ways...
